Managerial talent

1363

Derek Adams propensity to waste time and then complain about time being added on should not obscure the fact that he is a remarkably productive football manager.  Ross County, from Dingwall, population 5,000, are sitting fourth in the SPL and remain in touching distance of a place in Europe.  No need to highlight their Scottish Cup campaign in 2010.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Aberdeen have asked Ross County for permission to speak to him.  On the face of it, Aberdeen should fancy their chances of recruiting Adams but County are confident for a reason.  SPL, and in Owen Coyle’s case First Division, managers have been recruited by well-paying English clubs at levels the likes of Aberdeen cannot compete with.  County chairman, Roy McGregor, is likely to advise Adams to hold off for a more lucrative move south.

When Jimmy Calderwood left Dunfermline for Aberdeen in 2004 chairmen John Yorkston explained his surprise at Calderwood heading north, explaining that he believed one day Calderwood would move to Ibrox.  Aberdeen proved to be a plateau for Calderwood, as it has been for most over the last couple of decades.

If they don’t get Adams chances are they will go back to Motherwell; back-to-back second place finishes are exactly what is needed at Pittodrie right now.

Best of luck to Gordon Strachan on his first competitive game as Scotland manager tonight.

When wgs was manager at cp he made a statement defending caldwell and mcmanus … saying he would need £10m to replace one of them as both were internationals… picking caldwell last night was a mistake but hoping your right about last chance saloon for him … Miller … adam .. hutton…etc

  3. BMCUW,

    Quite right!

Watched Sportscene last night and they were turning on him already.

We know Gordon will do it his way.

BTW – As Coatbridge paper bhoy has brought-up the subject, one of my niece’s claims to fame is that when she was an infant and needed winding she was in the arms of WGS.

She then barrffed over the sooon to be Celtic legend (who’d a’ thought that).

But you are right now Gordon can do it his way with no pressure and good luck to him.

    Hail! Hail!

  4. Was at Hampden last night. Wales outclassed Scotland, that’s how bad the Scotland team was. WGS can’t escape critisism as he got his team selection wrong. His midfield two of McArthur & Dorrans looked like they were having their own wee competitiion to see who was the worst player on the park, neither could pass the ball to a teammate. Hanley looked like a rabbit in the headlights and Maloney was the anonymous non entity he was with us in big games, WGS also made the wrong substitutions, Rhodes should have came on when Fletcher got injured not 10 mins to go.Time WGS ditched some of the old guard, Caldwell, Miller, Hutton (abysmal performance from him) would be a start. Problem is we have no defenders who come close to international class, the other two centre backs in the squad were Webster & Berra and there’s no young prospects coming through from the under 21s.

I fear an embarassment on Tuesday and the knives will be out for WGS amongst the LL.

  12. The Bhoy Jinky,

When Gordon dropped Varga* and Bobo, he had a lot to prove in Central Defence, but to me Caldwell was no where near consistent enough in defence (mid-field meastro yes:-).

McManus was made Captain too young, never develpoed as the player he could’ve been after that.

It’s strange why so many Managers have a blind spot with players – I think this is one of Alex Ferguson’s great strenghts.

The good thing for International Managers is they don’t have to wait for a transfer window – time for a radical change in the Squad Gordon.

    Hail! Hail!

*Varga’s performance in Bratislava was shocking, I wouldn’t have handed him another Celtic Jersey after that.

  25. Wales thoroughly deserved the victory last night. They tried and succeeded to play football, whereby judging by some of the tackles put in Scotland were playing a form of rugby.
