Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

  1. Just looking at Maribor’s results so far this season, these guys shouldn’t be taken lightly. Unbeaten in all competitions having seen off the Croatian and Israeli champions already in the CL qualifiers. Celtic need to up the game very significantly.

They shouldn’t take us lightly either.

We’ve just beaten the polish champions 3-0.

  3. I’m off ooot but last point about posters using initials to identify players, my mind ain’t as sharp as it used to be, at times I’m looking at initials and thinking what the F***. I assume DM is Dylan, why not just say Dylan and give old buggers like me a break.

    Way too much research there.

You should just stick to the view that they are Eastern European dud foreigners who we have a Devine right to walk all over because we are Celtic in transition with a new manager and pre season.

I wonder how much they spent on appeasing supporters craving for big money signings ?

  5. I wonder when the good Lord is going to finally reveal His hand in all these events.

He surely must be pulling the strings here.

I mean, this surely must be orchestrated by someone…

    1. TFOD die with their last 2 owners being Green and Whyte.

    2. The last player to score against them was “Hoops”.

    3. One of TFOD’s last signings was Celik.

    4. The major player in nailing down their coffin none other than officials acting on behalf of the Queen.

    5. Who can forget “http://bluenose.co.uk/” ?

The list goes on and on….

I am sure many on here could add quite a number of seemingly orchestrated events which have played their part in this saga.

    And now the latest….

Firstly Celtic are humbled by Legia Warsaw giving the Sevconians an all too rare reason to celebrate.

But then, all too soon, their joy is turned to rage as Celtic are given a miraculous reprieve and drawn against the very team which played such a pivotal role in the demise of RFCil.

Surely the way this is all panning out, even the great unwashed must soon start to believe that there IS a God, He ain’t on their side and He has a ‘wicked’ sense of humour.

I have no idea what a ‘happyclapper’ is.

“So you want to go to a far inferior league giving up 15M in revenue, Sunday football because of the chance we might take a few beatings. We might take a few beatings in Europa then how would that look. Your post reeks of a losers attitude.”

The Europa is not ‘a far inferior league’ for any Scottish club, and it is our level at the moment. I do not want to see Celtic get humiliated in the CL because it could have long-term implications for the club. But that is what we face at the moment. I do not have any influence on the team so this is not a losers attitude. I am being realistic on where we are.

    My post was about GK’s.

Think Barca 2004 and who stole the headlines.

From memory he left the club a dry husk, confidence totally shot.

10 years later he may fetch more than FF an English international.

If he had to go away to rebuild his career then I would like to know why?

Why are you so afraid of being humiliated in the CL when the club was humiliated in Finland by the walloppers of North London?

PL has already done the damage.

We are getting the sympathy vote at the moment.

  14. First of all PL does not decide strategy, it is the whole Board that agrees the strategy and DD, as major shareholder, will have the most important say in that. PL implements the strategy.

Nonetheless if we want to get past Maribor and into CL Group stages we need to invest. The current team is not good enough. We have lost our European talisman, Sammi, and have not replaced with like. The team is in desperate need of new blood but of quality not quantity.

We need to replace the Ghod like Genuis of Georgios Samaras! oh and a centre half and an experienced midfielder and a striker ( although I think Griffiths would score if played through the middle).

Selling Fraser Forster now is ok in my book as long as we use some of that money to buy some more players.

For those advocating sticking to the plan of the previous two years…. Where is the next Wanyama or Fraser Forster in the current side? VvD will go as well. The next players in the cue for the outdoor due to value must be Forrest, Matthews but their value is nowhere near £6m. You might get that for Forrest if he gets a run in the team but Matthews isn’t worth anywhere north of 4.

So, if what we are told is that we need to sell around 20 million worth of players and reach the champions league group stages to survive what do we do next year?

Pfayr is exactly right in that measuring success based on profit is short term. We may make a profit this year but only based on player sales. Next year it is unlikely that the teams we play in the qualifiers will make the same admin error to guarantee European football post September. The Champions League puts a couple of million on a players value. Forster would have went for about 2 million less today if it wasn’t for us saying we need him for the champions league (a false statement as we were only trying to extract more out of them but guaranteed European football meant we had 5 million more in the hip.)

The next moves we make in the transfer market are vital. We also need to spin round players like Stokes, Griffiths and Izzy, sort the Commons situation …. And then we have the managers man management issues and tactics. We may find Griffiths at Hibs for a season and Stokes heading out. Commons away and a new left back is definitely needed.

Surely to god even the fans of the bean counting can see we need to strengthen. If you agree with this we must sell argument then who do we sell next year?

  18. Someone posted after the first game against Legia that the referee may have been got at.

There was also a suggestion there was unusual betting on the match in Warsaw.

Celtic took the lead early and already match favourites beforehand Legia went out to 20/1 at that point.

Legia then equalised after a few mins.

Ambrose was red carded and the Poles were given 2 soft penalties. The 1st one was as clear a miss as you will ever see. The 2nd penalty wouldn’t even been given against us by Hugh Dallas it was that soft. That was a decent save.

It may be that Legia were thrown out the CL for fielding an ineligible player or it could be that Uefa are using that as they believe there was something unsavoury about the first match.

Can whoever posted it up at the time repost or if anyone kept a copy can they put it back on here?

Not saying for one minute we did not deserve both legs soundly and we were terrible both games but the referee in the first match is either hopeless or at it.

    Well said.

Clerical error can only be used as an explanation for the offence, ie not a deliberate attempt to flout the rules.

It still doesn’t lessen the crime or exonerate them from punishment.

Ye git a chance to manage one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Ye try to instill yer vision intae your new squad but some of the squad dinnae like change. Said some of the squad are awe buddies and senior members. Said buddies are very influential to the young pups and plant their evil seed. New manager watches his new squad crumble to lower opposition (Nae offence Mr Z), twice in their first competitive outing. A wan aff wid be accepted but no twice. It looks to you like some of the squad irnae trying a jot and unrest vibrates around the dressing room.

A lot of people on here with short memories, especially the ones wanting Deila sacked pronto.

We appointed NL as manager with absolutely no managerial experience and he didn’t exactly set the heather on fire at the beginning of his tenure. He failed miserably in Europe and managed to win the Cup. In his second full season he got his stroke of luck in Europe with the Sion ruling and the turning point in his managerial career was the 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock, courtesy of Anthony Stokes. As I’ve said before the rest is history.

Ronny Deila comes to the club with managerial experience and has won a league championship in Norway, he like NFL is getting his stroke of luck in Europe with the Legia ruling, only he is getting it one year before Lenny did.

Like it or lump it our bread and butter is the domestic competitions of which the league is the most important one to win, a run in Europe is the icing on the cake and a European victory would be the whole cake with the candles on.

RD needs to be judged by what he does domestically in his first season nothing more, nothing less and if we get a good run in Europe all the better.

I have seen NFL taking pelters on here from guys who are Tims, as well as hun interlopers, and that was towards the end of his tenure as well as the beginning.

Sure we all want to have the ‘Fairy Tale’ Celtic who win everything and right all wrongs and spend money with gay abandon, but then again some of us live in the real world.

Back Ronny Deila until it is actually proven that he is a useless coach who is incapable of winning anything, in my book it takes at least a season to prove that.

Tony Mowbray may have managed it if the cheating huns hadn’t been around during his tenure but that’s the luck of the draw. Fortunately the people who run the club are a bit more pragmatic than some of the people who post on here and I am anything but a PLC man!

  27. Burnley78,

It is the role of the the clubs football dept and scouting operation. I will pass comment on the success / failure of their performance. Overall the performance is poor with some notable exceptions. Also driven by the CEO we are lowering the bar in terms of purchases and favouring cheap options or projects. At the moment the management team and first eleven is one big project due to all the sales and failed investment.

Lawwell knows the current team will not beat Maribor yet will in my view do nothing to help the current coach.

The CL this season is worth circa 20 mil to Celtic minimum probably closer to 25 mil. Next season with the BT increase the total benefit will be close to 30 mil. Instead of budgeting on a 12 months basis , the strategic plan should be to collect the 55-60 mil available and which would ensure club stability and domestic domination for the next 5 years.

Lawwell is a clever guy but does not intend to do that. Why ?

Lawwell has been downsizing Celtic for the last number of years , he believes his approach is working. However we are now at a crossroads. We either continue the current approach and enjoy the domestic chore and the inevitable downsizing to come. Or we take a more strategic approach without putting the club at risk and invest properly to secure CL income for next 2 seasons.

No more projects that have cost the club millions.

There could be one explanation for the lack of investment. Lawwell knows that Ronny is a mistake and will need to be taken out.

  28. Steinreignsupreme

So are you willing to give up 15M in revenue(huge amount for us) to MAYBE save a bit of face. We have just been beaten 6-1 in aggregate from LW a Europa League team. The lack of ambition and apathy amongst our support will do more damage than a couple of beatings.

A large section of our support are brainwashed, when did it come to this.

  29. Celtic were throwing away money in 2003. It was great but not sustainable. We indeed needed our club to become a business to move forward

Peter Lawwell cv was one of cost cutting and stream lining

In 2006 I had thought PL had done a great job then we financial out muscled the deid club for scott brown All was great. Then the wilo window and since then the balance sheet was king
