McGeouch suffers in friendly test

824

Friendly games are all about building match sharpness while hopefully avoiding injury.  Celtic were given an excellent opportunity to shape up against Real Madrid last night but a suspected broken jaw to Dylan McGeouch who was knocked unconscious will set the player back several weeks.

Henrik Larsson spectacularly returned to action after a double jaw break after three weeks in 2003, scoring with a header within minutes although he walked off the field after his injury without additional complications.  We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and hope to see him in Champions League action next month.

  1. Enrie. It’s not about Preston and me. It’s not about me and anybody. You quote Preston. Preston was born a decade after this document was written.

Do you think he’s read it? Do you think he should have read it?

    Aye, agreed.

Except with the Father Ted bit.

Surely it would be more like Father Dougal trying to interview Father Dougal? :)

Ref your post early this morn. Was glad to see you reference the JSD Band – know them well, played with several members for several years. Have a lot of time for them all.

You mentioned Preston. You seem to think he can’t speak Spanish and therefore can’t access one stream of primary sources.

‘You quote Preston. Preston was born a decade after this document was written.’

He’s a historian. Historians generally are born after the events they write about.

‘Do you think he’s read it? Do you think he should have read it?’

Preston will have read more primary sources, in Spanish, than you, I’m quite sure.

Why don’t you email him and ask him yourself if he has read any particular document. You could do it in Spanish if it makes you feel better. His email address is on his site.

  11. South of Tunis. Correct. A hugely unreported letter from the bishops of Spain to their brother bishops around the world in the face of misreporting of their (the bishops’) stance. The date is July 1 1937, just short of a year after the start of the war.

In the course of that first year, 14 bishops and 7,000 priests were assassinated and 20,000 Catholic lay people were also killed solely, the bishops said in the letter, because they were Catholics. Between February and July 1936 (when the war started) 410 churches had already been sacked and burned.

Guys want the Celtic board to speak up every time an eejit writes a column in a tabloid. How could the bishops stay silent in the face of the events of that first year?

My point is that things here are not black and white. Historians who write books don’t like when that happens as it takes too long to explain things and if you finish explaining and then conclude that you’re not sure what you think you look indecisive and that doesn’t sell books.

I will happily keep discussing. I don’t want to “own” anybody. That’s absolutely not me. But I love Spain and I love the Church and I too have opinions. And I can back them up. This is complex.

Which of Preston’s books have you read?

  14. Ernie, do you think people “hated” the Church because of the predominance among the clergy of people from a wealthy background?

  15. Enrie. Seriously? You want me to show you that I’ve read some books about the Spanish Civil War? Honestly?

I’ve asked which of Preston’s books you’ve read. You’ve passed judgement on them. I just wonder which books you had in mind.

    No.

  17. Ernie, see if it’s that thing about the predominance of the wealthy, you’re on dodgy ground.

How many seminarians do you think there were in Spain in 1935, the year before the civil war started?

How many of them do you think were from wealthy families?

Bear in mind that the Republican government had been in power since April 1931.

  18. Ernie. Preston’s biography of Franco and Revolution and War in Spain.

In which of his books does he refer to the bishops’ letter?

  19. Well, the games are over, overall I have enjoyed them.a pity that the opening ceremony was a bit military for me,the closing ceremony a bit of a disappointment, but the athetics did well.

Not surprised that Her Majesty and her husband didn’t attend closing ceremony.Well would you have.?

  20. Am now watching a recording of last night’s game.

Am glad no one posted the result all day, although I noticed someone implying Real scored 3 goals – so am expecting final score to be 3-4…..

Is it just me or does WGS look slimmer now than he ever did as a player??

  21. Celtic_First on 13 August, 2012 at 00:22 said:

    ‘Ernie. No? Excellent.

Why do you think it was?’

Because the Church aligned itself with the wealthy and powerful while the poor starved.

    Like what the Gospels said.

  22. fanadpatriot

Noticed that. Why on earth is there a need to involved the military in sporting events? (rhetorical question). Absolutely paradoxical to an event that is supposed to unit the international community.

‘Ernie. Preston’s biography of Franco and Revolution and War in Spain.’

And you think this is a fair and accurate comment on either of those books?

‘Historians who write books don’t like when that happens as it takes too long to explain things and if you finish explaining and then conclude that you’re not sure what you think you look indecisive and that doesn’t sell books.’

  24. Ernie. On the books. Fair comment. Aye.

    Ernie.

I thought the thing about the clergy siding with the wealthy would be at the heart of it. The bishops say in the letter that this is the reason reports from overseas journalists have given. You know as well as I that it has been much repeated.

However, if you’re interested, the number of seminarians in 1935 was 7401. Of these, six men were from noble families. Six. A further 115 came from families with more than 10,000 pesetas in capital, while 7280 came from families that lived in poverty or semi-poverty. That’s what the document says. I make that more than 98.3%.

    It’s a big number Ernie.
