McGeouch suffers in friendly test

824

Friendly games are all about building match sharpness while hopefully avoiding injury.  Celtic were given an excellent opportunity to shape up against Real Madrid last night but a suspected broken jaw to Dylan McGeouch who was knocked unconscious will set the player back several weeks.

Henrik Larsson spectacularly returned to action after a double jaw break after three weeks in 2003, scoring with a header within minutes although he walked off the field after his injury without additional complications.  We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and hope to see him in Champions League action next month.

  1. AFTER a convincing victory over HJK Helsinki, Celtic are now looking to cement their place in Europe’s top flight after being drawn with Swedish champions Helsingborgs IF.

The club’s official travel partner, Thomas Cook Sport, has flight and ticket options available to fans hoping to guarantee their seat at their play-off in Sweden on Tuesday, August 21.

Supporters hoping to back Neil Lennon’s Bhoys in their bid to secure a place in the group stages of the competition, can do so with a day trip from Thomas Cook Sport. Consisting of return flights from Glasgow, transfers to and from the Olympia Stadium and an official match ticket*, travel options are available from just £299pp.

Make sure you’re there to see Celtic book their place in Europe by visiting http://www.thomascooksport.com or call the sales team on 0844 800 9900 to book your place.

  2. I know Celtic have to move the SB holders if UEFA demand the seats, but during the close season all people who could be affected should be contacted and asked to pick new seat for the games at that point so they get something decent.

I mean how hard would it be to do that?

Cheers. I’d thought it would be around that. Worthwhile trip then financially. Typical Celtic though picking up so many injuries in a friendly. Surely we’ll be giving some of the young players a game at ross county & keep our first team safe for Helsingborg!

They would have to wait for the selling of ST’s to be finished before they could do that.

I’m sure there is a system in place for those affected.

But I agree that anyone who gets a ST in one of those seats should be informed beforehand of the possible seat change.

Trust me, you could not be more angrier than we were when we were moved for the Manu, Juve, Milan games!

Morning all from a slighty grey but muggy morning in Milton Keynes!!

Just moved myself and family down south and require information where are the best places in and around MK to watch the Celts as the majority of places favour showing English football!

Got a mate who’s from there and is actually going down this weekend, will text him and get back to you later, not sure when, I’m back at work later after three long weeks “arrrgh”

  7. pabloh-First thing to be done this week, is withdraw all players from meaningless international friendlies. We have 2 of our biggest games in years coming up,and as you say we are getting injuries just now, would be silly to risk any more.

I appreaciate that UEFA demand seats and that the club have no choice but to accede to this. My gripe is about the lack of information and customer care. As GreenJedi says, more could quite easily be done to ensure those affected are accomodated reasonably close to where they normally sit. It’s typical of Corporate Celtic’s attitude towards ordinary fans – they just don’t really give a toss.

Yep – midweek international friendlies a few days before the premiership starts too – their managers must be going nuts! In my opinion if we avoid defeat in the away leg we will be looking good to progress.

this happens every time in CL. It’s a domino effect thing.

Eufa get prime seats in 103 & 104. The ST holder of these seats get shunted across to 105 & 106 and these guys in turn get shunted further along.

    Effectively, everyone gets Newco’d (relegated!)

    Interesting definition of ‘competitive’….

Celtic will saunter the SPL this season. We must play every game with Europe in mind if we aren’t to see a dramatic fall-off in fan numbers. If Lenny goes to Dingwall with even a nucleus of first-teamers his XI I will be miffed.

As to being competitive, every effort must be made to get Celtic out of Scottish football.

  13. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Is it true that Celtic will give you refunds for ‘vouchers in the club shop’ if you’ve been over charged on your S/Book, ie charged to include games against the Horribles which will now no longer take place?

    Surely refunds should be cash?

  14. up_over_goal.

Teams of a similar standard mean competitive competitions. Of course this is not always a good thing – bad teams can provide competitive games.

I expect far more squad rotation from us this season and more young players given their chance. Some of the senior pros may not like being rested but will have to get used to it.

  15. Loans have not been very productive for us over the years, I can’t think of one where the team went on to be better/more succesful as a result of the loan.

    We should learn from experience

kdc says no to loans!! :-)

  16. A case being brought by the administrators of Rangers Football Club against Collyer Bristow has been delayed after former partner and ex-club company secretary Gary Withey applied to join proceedings as a defendant.

Up to now Withey, who was instrumental in businessman Craig Whyte’s doomed takeover of the Scottish club, was not party to administrators Duff & Phelp’s claim of at least £25m damages against Collyer Bristow.

The firm is accused of “deliberate deception” in a case brought by Duff & Phelps partners Paul Clark and David Whitehouse in relation to the advice Withey provided on Whyte’s bid.

Taylor Wessing restructuring partners Nick Moser and Neil Smyth are instructed for the administrators, with Clyde & Co partner Richard Harrison and senior associate Nicole McKinnon representing Collyer Bristow.

To this point, the claim was effectively against Collyer Bristows’ insurers, but if Withey’s application to join proceedings as a defendant is successful, he could also be found liable.

Withey could not be contacted at his current firm Segens, where he is a consultant, but The Lawyer understands he wishes to have the opportunity to defend himself against the allegations of his conduct contained in the claim. His application will be heard on 10 September.

Withey has instructed Mayer Brown partner Will Glassey, who has instructed Wilberforce Chambers’ John Wardell QC.

The trial was set for October, but a case management conference will now take place on that date instead.

Both sides maintain that they have a strong case, with the administrators’ counsel, South Square’s Mark Phillips QC, insisting there was a “conspiracy” to cause injury to the club by opting for Whyte’s takeover rather than a share issue to raise the funds and pay off debt.

Phillips also said that it would be “extremely difficult” for Collyer Bristow to show that Withey’s statements were “anything but false”.

For Collyer Bristow 3VB’s Cyril Kinsky QC and Matthew Hardwick have now been joined by Wilberforce Chambers’ Ian Croxford QC. They have pledged to “vigorously defend” the claims and the firm has said it finds the claims “highly speculative”.

It is accepted from both sides that there is no evidence that anyone bar Withey from Collyer Bristow was involved in the alleged “conspiracy” – which makes his intervener application all the more interesting.

He previously told The Lawyer: “Those allegations are an outrage – they are groundless, they should not have been made, and at the appropriate time the true facts surrounding this matter will be brought to light.”

It is also understood that the eventual claim against Collyer Bristow could dwarf the £25m figure put forward.

Taylor Wessing, for the administrators, is expected to suggest that the damages flow from the failure to secure shareholders funding and as a result, include the club’s lost income and eventual liquidation.

In April, the firm had sought an expedited trial in a bid to secure the financial future of the club. That will not happen as Rangers has been reformed as a ‘newco’ and will start life in the Scottish Division Three.

Brazilian midfielder Andre Moritz has started a trial period with Rangers, STV understands.

The 26-year-old, who holds Italian citizenship, is available on a free transfer having left Turkish club Mersin Idmanyurdu in the summer.

Moritz has spent the last five years in Turkey, having moved to Kasimpasa S.K. from Fluminese in 2007, before going to spend a season apiece with Kayserispor and Mersin.

A left-sided attacking player, Moritz arrived in Scotland at the weekend and joined Ally McCoist’s side for training at Murray Park on Monday.

Rangers have already added his compatriot Emilson Cribari to their squad, as reinforcements are added ahead of the commencement of a one-year signing embargo starting September 1.

  22. Fits the MO for one of our signings….

West Brom have sparked a scramble by putting Olympic ace Chris Wood up for sale after getting Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Premier League Albion secured Lukaku on a season-long loan from the Champions League winners.

And the Baggies have since told 6ft 2in New Zealand striker Wood, 20, he can leave either on loan or permanently.

Wood has played for his country in the last World Cup and scored for them in the Olympics.

He also bagged 13 goals out on loan in the Championship last term with Birmingham and Bristol City.

Celtic head a queue of clubs chasing Wood, including Hull and Nottingham Forest.

Anyone got a link to Leckie’s article on ‘warning the bhuns’ 15 years ago….?

  24. I had a wee look at some SPL highlights and I reckon the clubs aren’t really getting the attendance bounce they’d have hoped for. Maybe a bit early but I’m on Admin-watch!

Motherwell, with 2 European attendances and a Celtic game in a few weeks will see it out till at least the New Year.

St Mirren have Celtic soon too, but will it be enough? A nervous Board and a Chairman who wants out, but a fans group close to take over they’ll be cutting costs and wages right up to 31 August.

St Johnstone. Been over the course, tightly run, had one Euro gate and Celtic soon. Wouldn’t put the money on them popping. Same for Ross County and Dundee, with additionally no legacy to shift and an uplift in average attendances for those two.

United (fans rallying and Europe), and Aberdeen with the best of the fan revolts, will see it out and find a permanent level I think.

Hearts are the best supported team after Celtic, have a sell out to come v Liverpool and should be fine. With Vlad the mad in charge though you just never know.

We’re down to Inverness, Hibs and Kilmarnock. Inverness have Celtic in a fortnight, and again before the split and have shifted some players. They are not so long in the SPL that they don’t know how the tougher end of the market works.

    Hibs.

Hmmmm. Hibernian. Off to a bad start. A two faced Chairman who can spin and blame and horribly cosy with Campbell Ogilvie. One home Celtic game, not until New Year. No Europe, disenfranchised fans, I reckon Hibs’ Board will be very, very nervous about early apathy if they get cut adrift in the SPL. My shock contenders.

Kilmarnock. Oooft. One home v Celtic game in December and the appetite among

Tims to attend is as yet unknown. No Europe. Legacy debt. A Chairman perhaps prejudiced to ‘tell you so’ to prove his point on the vote. Watch for threadbare squad list come 31 August.

So my 1-2-3 to watch are therefore:

    1. Kilmarnock

    2. Hibs

    3. St Mirren

A cup exit could be the tipping point.

Beyond them Motherwell need some serious work for longevity but the rest should be able to find a level and face the new era.

It’s whether 1, 2 or 3 of those popping is armageddon, or a re-alignment to reality. I know which way it will be spun in the MSM!

I have a very good friend who’s a Killie fan, but the Club is a terrible case study for sustainability in Scotland and I won’t shed a tear. I have a lot of respect for the fan movements of Motherwell and St Mirren and genuinely wish those groups well. Hibs is a quandary. Re-built and grown from the roots, youth investment. I just think they may have expired as a force. Simple demographics of Edinburgh. Maybe too woolly an argument as I have no sociological research, but I’ve said it, and it’s only a blog post till the kettle boils. I’d genuinely love Dundee Utd and Aberdeen to go on long winning streaks and challenge and really enjoy the footy. ‘Feart’ of going to Pittodrie again, because they have a good team, not from Celtic going backwards. That would be great, honestly.

But even if 3 go pop then the SFL has 3 ready made replacements who are more sustainable and that’s a certainty, so no armageddon for me, regardless of this year’s fallers.

The only Scottish club in bother for me will be Kilmarnock and they can have it.

Inverness never have a crowd anyway. Don’t think they’ll be paying oot too much anyway and they have 2 home gates against Celtic (one in a couple of weeks).

Point taken with Hibs when they canny even get their own fans in to watch the Edinburgh derby.

St Mirren had a healthy away support in Dundee the other day and Dundee’s away support will do St Johnstone a turn as well as those clubs hate each other.

Only Killie in bother for me.
