McGill comments allow SFA scope for inquiry

440

Amid the acres of confusion that surrounds Rangers and the Scottish game at the moment, one matter is now clear of the tax authorities, not subject to dispute by the various parties squabbling over Rangers, and free for the SFA to examine.  If they are interested.

Former Rangers director, Mike McGill, when speaking to the media alongside Sir David Murray on Tuesday, said, “The club used an old offshore EBT scheme in 1999 with three players.  That scheme is the subject of the small tax case.

“The Revenue provided some information to us in early 2011 and we conceded based on that information and provided for payment in the club accounts.”

The simple question for the SFA is, were details of payments made through the old offshore EBT scheme, which HMRC challenged last year and Rangers’ old board conceded, submitted to the SFA?

If they were, our faith in the governance of the game can be restored and we can all look forward to the Cup Final on Sunday.  If not, whose registrations were invalid and which games did they participate in?

As this question affects more than just SPL football, the SFA are the only body competent to investigate this matter. They are also competent to administer any appeal process. We hear the SPL inquiry will not mature until after the HMRC-Rangers First Tier Tribunal reports, which could be well after the SPL split, potentially creating chaos if Rangers were incorrectly placed in the top six.

This is a governance issue of enormous proportions. The SFA should use McGill’s comments as an opportunity to take a fresh look at this issue and quickly instigate an inquiry.

I’m off the see the lawyers this morning.  More later, I hope!

Who are the teams involved? Which seasons could this be proved for?

All we need is for someone to start discussion on the forums of the relevant teams.

They may all be interested in incorrectly registered players at the Huns that denied them progression in the 2008 UEFA Cup campaign

  4. I have to say I think Phil is being very foolish here… there is very little that UEFA can do as Rangers never won a European competition during this time…

    So what could they do?

Oh they could invalidate their last 5 years of european matches…. and that would completely mess up the Scottish coefficient.

We would really struggle to qualify for the Champions League in that case.

  6. Surely if the huns administrators (If they can still be called that) are succesful in getting the Ticketus deal invalidated, Ticketus can then sur the Huns for their money back or sue Lloyds for the money back?

Now if that is the case, the huns will have to stump up the £24m to Ticketus or Lloyds have to give Ticketus the £24m back and if yhat is the case the huns would be back in hock to LLoyds!!!

There have been so many instances of remembarance that just happened to need a minute’s silence. Some of them have been more than a minute.

This time, I think we should take the initiative and insist on a minute of silence for RFC itself.

A4e could buy Rangers, After all the company is already being investigated for defrauding the government, had a millionaire chairman who left under a cloud and is known for its discrimination. Perfect fit really.

Had that privilege of the guidance of one of the finest men I have ever met in any walk of life, in Mr Murphy, Headmaster at St.Hillary’s primary on Calderglen Road. Long walks up the glen, Saturday afternoons at the Olympia……. What’s not to like.

@StewartRegan E.g.if you have been told that CO’s EBT participation was no more than the the “cost of a good night out”, keep digging. …………

@StewartRegan If you had been told that CO had no responsibility for Rangers’ actions through to 2005, keep digging.

@stewartregan Fact is- Murray & McGill admitted to breaking SFA rules (extra-contractual payments). What are you doing about it?

We will be in the Champions route to the Champions League – facing the Swedish champions etc – co-efficients are less important. We cant say they only cheated us – they have cheated Scottish & European football.

  14. RogueLeader,

Honestly that’s garbage. I’m all for anything that causes Rangers damage… kick them when they are down I say…but I for one would like to seem my club thrive from this debacle…

Not end up struggling to get Europa League because we hate Rangers more than we care for our Club!

  15. greenjedi,

    Don’t you get it?

The courts will invalidate the Ticketus deal meaning Rangers get the season tickets back. They can’t afford to pay Ticketus back the £24M so they become just another creditor. And when the CVA is approved, Ticketus will get a fraction of what it is owed.

Then Rangers will have paid off all its debts, have all of its season tickets to sell and will live happily ever after.

    What could possibly go wrong?

I am not going to make a pitch for one percentage rather than another: it’s the swooning at the very suggestion of sharing gate money I am critical of. As I say, this is what happens for every cup-tie played at Celtic Park. Also, it was good enough for the Stein years, and we did OK then.

Basically, the future has to include the possibility that a club like Hibs or Aberdeen can keep a player, or even sign one, with a recent or prospective Scottish international career. It has to be conceivable that other clubs than ourselves can win the league championship. Celtic fans have to attend home matches reconciled to the idea of a difficult game which might be lost. The notion/phrase “We should always beat a team like …” has to go.

At the root of the problem is the corrosive, actually poisonous, fantasy that Celtic have a future outwith Scotland. The club has been run well since the day Fergus McCann took over, but the new regime’s foolish belief in, and their insulting campaign for, a move to another league has been immensely damaging – IMMENSELY damaging – to our club

  19. So by a technicality they are not actually in administration.

Does this mean that technically at the moment they do not have protection from their creditors?

Now correct me if I am wrong but are Ticketus not arguing that the floating charge holder has enough in his security to cover their debt?

So whilst the administrators without portfolio are currently scrabbling around trying to create a creditor to the tune of £24m should they not be worried that self same creditor then opposes the “rubber stamping” on Monday as is the right of any creditor? Or even worse have their legal team prepared a nice little hand grenade to be rolled under the door tomorrow morning in the shape of a winding up order?

Maybe its just being a Glasgow boy that I can’t take tae the place. In Castlemilk (no matter its social problems in 80s) there was a warm vibrant and authentic sense of community. Up here I have lived in the same street for 8 years and hardly spoke to any of them. Mind you during the Madchester “RIOT” Final and the Royal Wedding there was plenty of Union Jack waving…which (call me anti-social) I find alienating. I do tend to think anyone who isn’t a Republican is a moron (yes I know that is a sweeping assumption). Just prefer Glasgow and always will…but the missus is fae EK.

My opinion is based on purely what I said. Integrity is paramount. The cheaters should be brought to task and made to pay no matter the consequences.

Any appeasement, blind eye turning etc makes us no better by putting self interest in front of rules, integrity and fair play.

  25. Any sharing of ticket revenue will be incredibly difficult for Celtic to agree to.

Our revenue (in a non CL season) is split approximately 60% ticket sales, 26.5% Merchandising and 13.5% TV money.

In 2010/11 we brought in £30.9m from ticket sales. These included cup games and a couple of preliminary Euro games but I’ll leave these aside and assume £1.9m was brought in from these games. That leaves £29m from core business (i.e. SPL)

We sold 930,395 tickets for home games so that worked out at an average cost of £31 per ticket per game.

Assuming we follow a patter of sharing and use ticket costs of £31, this is what our revenue would have been in 2010/11:

    Home sales – 930,395 x £31 = £29m / 2 = £14.5m

    Away sales – 267,631 x £31 = £8.3m / 2 = £4.15m

So Revenue from this area would have been £18.65m which represented a decrease of over £10m. in 2010/11 we posted a small profit of £850k. This would have been completely wiped out and then some.

A reduction of core income of this magnitute would leave us needing to make savings of almost £1m per month. Sound familiar.

I really hope our board stand tall on this issue as it is paramount importance to the business of the club.

  26. There is value for Porto to challenge Rangers and obtain two 3-0 wins. Helps their individual co-efficient and any potential seeding.

  27. What could UEFA do?

They could start by banning the guilty club from any participation in UEFA competitions at any level for the same number of years as the contractual shenanigans went on.

If the guilty club appeals, double the ban.
