McGill comments allow SFA scope for inquiry

440

Amid the acres of confusion that surrounds Rangers and the Scottish game at the moment, one matter is now clear of the tax authorities, not subject to dispute by the various parties squabbling over Rangers, and free for the SFA to examine.  If they are interested.

Former Rangers director, Mike McGill, when speaking to the media alongside Sir David Murray on Tuesday, said, “The club used an old offshore EBT scheme in 1999 with three players.  That scheme is the subject of the small tax case.

“The Revenue provided some information to us in early 2011 and we conceded based on that information and provided for payment in the club accounts.”

The simple question for the SFA is, were details of payments made through the old offshore EBT scheme, which HMRC challenged last year and Rangers’ old board conceded, submitted to the SFA?

If they were, our faith in the governance of the game can be restored and we can all look forward to the Cup Final on Sunday.  If not, whose registrations were invalid and which games did they participate in?

As this question affects more than just SPL football, the SFA are the only body competent to investigate this matter. They are also competent to administer any appeal process. We hear the SPL inquiry will not mature until after the HMRC-Rangers First Tier Tribunal reports, which could be well after the SPL split, potentially creating chaos if Rangers were incorrectly placed in the top six.

This is a governance issue of enormous proportions. The SFA should use McGill’s comments as an opportunity to take a fresh look at this issue and quickly instigate an inquiry.

I’m off the see the lawyers this morning.  More later, I hope!

  6. That aside though, your point almost stands.

Assuming we have no orcs in the league, the average crowd in the SPL would drop below that of Hearts – they’d become a net contributor towards sharing.

With the orcs, and based on this season’s averages*, Hearts would gain from a share of an additional 140 fans worth of money whereas St Johnstone would actually receive a payout from gate sharing equivalent to their entire stadium being filled.

*reality would be much different in that games v St Johnstone tend to be each clubs smallest gate, so they’d in fact have a net gain of around 8,000 fans worth of money. Conversely, Celtic, Hearts and Renegers tend to play in front of relatively large crowds for away games and so would scoop larger amounts of money from the home team than would be normal.

I might dig into the figures tonight.

For the record, I’m all for gate sharing on the basis that we agree to it and are not backed into a corner about it (a very thin point of principle, I know)

  9. If the London based journos have indeed clocked onto just how big a sporting scandal this is then RFC and the SFA’s day look increasingly numbered

And this Phil Porto thing, what exactly would Porto be looking for; I’d imagine just monetary compensation?

    Auldheid,

was looking for Delia to answer I noted she was having a go at us on Alex Thompsons blog for dismissing her argument, and argument she has given no detail.

I can see an argument for sharing, but the away gate only, if they wat to share then they need to intput. They get a share of he Celtic supports money at their home games.

Something I’d like to throw into the hat is; should the competition organiseres be paying for Police attendance at games, the clubs provide their own security, why dont the sfa, spl provide for any further security the local constabulary deem necessary, it would ensure there is a flat rate for costs and not a variation depending on who is playing, therehas recently been gossip we pay more than the monkeys, which IMO means we are subsidising the monkeys costs.

  17. Another thing I’d be happy to see, would be a scaled sharing of the ‘Market Pool’ money from the Champions League as long as it was solely set aside for youth/community development.

I do not see this money as being ‘ours’ at all, in that the market pool is not based on the club, but the country from within which the club competes.

I doubt many supporters of other clubs in the CL would view it similarly. In this, I think Uefa have erred.

    Morning/good afternoomn fellow Celtic supporters!

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but has anyone read the article on BBC Football about the reporter who wore a blindfold and used the facilities that blind supporters use in the Liberty Stadium to follow the game?

It was a good read, and he explains how only 7 out of 20 Premier League clubs have these facilities available for blind people.

Does anyone have any idea if we have these facilities available at Celtic Park?

If guilty, if the SPL do their jobs correctly. Could this actually be considered the biggest sporting scandal of all time?

  20. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON on

Porto certainly owe us one after all their time wasting….

But can someone explain the link between Porto and ricksen please? Am I missing something?

  21. The Battered Bunnet on

    Auldheid

Using the average gates in the link provided, I have run a quick calc based on £25 average ticket price for 19 home games for each club per season.

Bear in mind that the ticket price varies according to club marketing intiatives and other factors, but it doesn’t seem unrepresentative.

The upshot is, with 35% of the gates being pooled and then distributed on a 1/12th basis, that Celtic lose £6M of income per season, Rangers lose £5M per season, Hearts break even, and the rest benefit on a sliding scale from £600K Hibs, to £1.6M St Johnstone.

Seems to me that actually the league would be no more competitive at the top end, but much more so at the bottom.

Bollox of an idea to be honest.

  22. Hang on a minute, clowns FC are taking Ticketus to court? I thought they were party of the cavalry getting ready to ride to the rescue.

O please, don’t tell me, are the announcements from clowns FC less than truthful? I am shocked!

  23. Pabloh – UEFA use national registration for registration in their competitions. If you are invalidly registered at the SFA and play in UEFA tournaments, the players are also invalid for those too.

More than just Scottish sides have been cheated….

I have said it many times, the potential costs of litigation for loss of earnings would DWARF any Big Tax Case finding. The best bet is to let the club, and their historical transgressions, die.

The second contract in the Sun was Ricksen’s, rangers played Porto in 2005 and fielded Ricksen.

If it found that Ricksen did indeed have a second contract Porto are going to UEFA and then their Lawyers as rangers fielded an ineligible player.

Don’t know if we still have facilities for the blind at C.P., but I understand we used to …

There’s a famous (apocryphal?) tale of the in-house commentator-for-the-blind during an Celtic-Rangers game saying something like: “MacDonald for Rangers; plays the ball wide on the right to McLean; McLean crosses to the back post for Johnstone ……. and the bas***d has scored!”

In a totally unrelated response: Where is the ‘Fighting Fund’ money going? How much do rangers stand to make by making sure the Glasgow Derby goes ahead?
