McGregor and managing form of young players

913

If you’ve not been following the work being done in your name in Malawi this week, do so here.  20 people arrived from Scotland early this week on behalf of the Celtic Foundation to renovate six centres which feed children ages five and under.  They are also building a latrine (pretty sure this is a toilet) at one of the centres.

It’s another remarkable testament to the ethos of Celtic 127 years after the project started.

The Foundation are in Malawi with Mary’s Meals, the remarkable Scottish charity which is feeding hundreds of thousands of the world’s poorest children each day.  By careful management of costs, utilisation of volunteers and ‘vocational’ staff, a remarkably high 93% of their revenue reaches those in need on the ground.

Really good to read Callum McGregor speaking to Celtic media.  Not that he had anything particularly illuminating to say, but he was speaking after putting in a training session, confirming his return to fitness.

With the injury to James Forrest, Callum was one of the few bright lights in our early season form, opening the scoring in three consecutive European away games.  He even shone in the inept Murryfield performance against Legia.

At the Hearts game last month I overheard someone suggest Callum needed a rest.  His form had definitely dipped, which is not uncommon after young players sparkly when first breaking into the team.  If he stayed fit there’s little chance he would have been rested for any of the recent games, such has been the form of those around him, so maybe his recent illness came at the right time.

The BBC down south doesn’t tend to skew it’s spend to only one team.

I’m willing to bet that Rangers receive significantly more than any other Scottish team. In fact,their-our!-money has probably been a major factor in keeping the huns afloat recently.

I would describe the money SKY puts in as obscene but that’s a different topic. The licence fee funded BBC has revenues of over £5 Billions to spend. What’s the budget for Scottish football compared to the English game?

MOTD, MOTD2 & The Football League Show dedicated to bringing football to my screen all weekend. Very little coverage of the Scottish game.

    BMCUW,

That’s always been the case with them. Can you imagine the Scottish football authorities subsidising the broadcasting of our live matches if we were ever in the lower leagues?

While I’m on, can anyone point me in the direction of footage of the Boyd ‘not proven’ head-butt, seems to have vanished from the BBC website.

The amount of money the BBC puts into English football is a disgrace when compared to not just the Scottish game but all sports in the UK in general.

They must be acting outside their broadcasting remit with MOTD and the likes.

I have read somewhere or other that the BBC give more money to Gary Lineker than it does to Scottish football.

Any Southside/ EK / Lanarkshire tims will be welcomed to the football at K Park tomorrow, where EKFC take on Spartans in the Scottish Cup 2nd replay, 3pm.

The tie finished 3-3 at Ainslie Park last week, a cracking match at every level, and I would expect the same again tomorrow.

EK and Spartans have met 4 times in the past year. It stands at 3 draws and a win for Kilby.

No predicting the outcome tomorrow, but keep an eye on the fixed odds, with EK available at 5-1 before last week’s game, a bonkers price considering recent results.

    Anyway, K Park, 3pm.

I am the (public) source you refer to.

    It’s true.

Lineker is on a salary of £2M p.a. although this includes his other BBC Sports work, not just MoTD

His MoTD pundit colleagues as of 2 years ago received variously £1.5M (Hanson) £1M (Shearer, Lawrenson)

The BBC deal with the SPFL rose significantly last year, from £1.2M to £1.45M for TV, Radio and internet coverage.

The BBC spends £60M per season on EPL TV rights (not radio or internet).

It costs a further £300,000 per hour of broadcasting to produce.

Plus the costs of the pundits.

MoTD plus MoTD2 is broadcast for 2.5 hours per week over 38 weeks.

The total cost of MoTD is in the order of £100M per year, funded by the BBC’s central sports rights budget, which we all contribute to via the licence fee.

The cost of Sportscene – a low budget parody of MoTD – is funded from the BBC Scotland budget. BBC Scotland are required to produce television and radio News, Current Affairs, Sports and Drama in English and Gaelic from their budget, which this year is approx £90M, falling to £87M next year. It amounts to around 10,000 hours of output each year.

The BBC spends more on 95 hours of MoTD each year than it spends on the entirety of output from BBC Scotland.

    All sources pukka.

  13. CQN is a hard slog at times.

It worse when we have no football. Correction no Celtic football.

It’s like a rainy day when the weans were all stuck indoors, before the digital age.

Squabbles and strops were frequent and my mother would end up putting us in separate rooms for a wee while. OK a wee slap on the backside wasn’t amiss.

Now try reading it from a treadmill.

Existentialism is distracting enough to have you sliding to the back of the belt and crashing into the wall. Now that would make the wife roar with laughter.

It’s easier just to give up and read the display.

Time run, distance covered, calories consumed, calories from fat, pulse.

I didn’t think it would be that high.

Cool down and it’s time to relax with this calming piece from the revolutionary poet Joseph Mary Plunkett.

I see His Blood Upon the Rose

I see his blood upon the rose

And in the stars the glory of his eyes,

His body gleams amid eternal snows,

His tears fall from the skies.

    I see his face in every flower;

The thunder and the singing of the birds

Are but his voice—and carven by his power

    Rocks are his written words.

All pathways by his feet are worn,

His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea,

His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn,

    His cross is every tree.

Wishing you all a healthy and peaceful weekend. ‘GG

If the current players can’t or won’t adapt, they should be hunted, and replacements brought in.

I am not asking to bring in players for the sake of it.

RD has played this system, or a variation of it all through his career, it’s how he managed a league win against the odds.

But thems who are against RD are never going to be convinced, they want instant success and are not prepared for a transition that shouldn’t be happening.

I think we were spoiled. I actually remember thinking when Choccy McClair and Le Petit Merde left us that we would have no problem getting a replacement because we’d always had great goalscorers – and that was true of Celtic throughout their entire history up to that point. We always seemed to have a really strong midfield too.

Stats would suggest we were poor in Europe but it seemed better than it does now. It was perhaps more ‘real’. Guys earning a wee bit more than their Jungle followers, playing their guts out for the ’cause’ (such as it was)

More to the point though, Ronny I’d starting to make me worried.

The early days saw a cardinal mistake for any new manager, when he alienated guys he would need to ensure his own tenure.

but it’s the set up on the team I’m unhappy about. I’m watching a Celtic side playing wide guys on the “wrong” side. We don’t create much on the right the left is a little better.

The Accies defeat was difficult to take. But Guidetti’s substitution was unfathomable. I can’t figure that out, my only idea why that happened is so stupid, it’s almost unmentionable…

It’s this, that he thought the problem was the striker. Everyone and their dog could see it was the supply. But Stokes and Commons finished the game. Our new striker didn’t get on the pitch. And we ended up so desperate our centre back was employed up top for the last 5.

like I said I want progress, we all do. We need to innovate, otherwise we regress.

As far as the EPL is concerned, they’re not permitted to broadcast outside of the UK under the terms of their rights deal.

    Ditto Scottish Football.

The £60M pa is strictly a UK geographic deal.

Sales of MoTD to overseas territories, for example Setanta’s show in Ireland (Rep of), are complex. The ‘home’ broadcaster requires to purchase both the broadcast rights from the EPL, and then the BBC packaging of them from the Beeb. Otherwise they would simply have the punditry, not the football.

From that respect, BBC gets a contribution towards their production costs for the programme, and the EPL gets its broadcasting rights royalty. You’ll need to ask Setanta what the split is with their current deal.

    Trust that’s helpful.
