Mikey, Moh and converting talent

414

I could not make sense of why we signed Mohamed Elyounoussi on loan from Southampton in the last days of the 2019 summer transfer window.  He played in Mikey Johnston’s position, a prospect I had great hopes for.  Just days later, Mikey was a star at Ibrox, winning possession (albeit without much difficulty) and setting up Odsonne Edouard for the opening goal.

Mohamed proved to be an important part of yet another treble in our second nine-in-a-row season, whereas the Celtic coaches saw gaps in Mikey’s play I had missed.

It has been five years since Mikey made his debut, so long, perhaps, that we have lost sight of the fact he is only 23 and missed much of the intervening period through injury.  Jota we more readily think of as young, although the Portuguese is three weeks older.

I’m not prepared to write Mikey off.  He has an ability to switch left-to-right and back better than anyone else in the squad at the moment (including Jota).  His battles with form and end product have been common among wingers for decades and are not fatal to a successful career.

With three years left on his contract, he needs regular football and encouragement.  Celtic have to learn how to convert this level of natural talent into a successful career, even if it means sending them out for a period.

  1. The three lions are the emblem of England. William the Conqueror used two lions on a red background as his coat of arms and brought this symbol to the English throne.

  2. Bada Bing & Ernie Lynch,

Three Lions in my opinion is a great football song. Very irritating, but extremely catching. If I were an England suppoter I would love it.

My favourite ( adapted for footie ) is the Stone Roses. ” I wanna be Edouard “.

Sorry to hear of the passing of your wife.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time.

  4. William I, byname William the Conqueror or William the Bastard or William of Normandy, French Guillaume le Conquérant or Guillaume le Bâtard or Guillaume de Normandie, (born c. 1028, Falaise, Normandy [France]—died September 9, 1087, Rouen)

He brought the Normans to Ireland and therefore the English.

  5. That big haddie Simms has gone to Sunderland and not Hearts.

Hearts now have Shankland, a pretty mediocre talent imho.

Will Aberdeen challenge them for 3rd this year ? Having watched Herats against the Huns in the cip final, they were absolutely mince. Nielson, fawned over, is a poor manager.

I agree on the irrelevance of men’s songs in the women’s game. I think the FA still had a ban on women in 1966 (Scotland too).

England are one of the handful of nations putting money into the game now so they should be making a home final. I expect them to win

  7. I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the catchy Vindaloo by Fat Les yet.

A beautiful reminder of the simplicity of football where “‘we’ are gonna score one more than you” is the aim of the game ultimately.

sonofaderryman- excellent post, some of the ‘ drive him to the airport ‘ mob,go well over the top on players, some are a bit more balanced, IMO he would benefit greatly from going to a Hibs or Motherwell for a season, to get game time a hopefully stay fit,Ange has plenty of options in the wide areas.

Poignant post about one of your own Micky Johnston.

May I ask what your view is on the NFL rant on the touchline and the aftermath in the dressing room.

Did this public rebuke destroy his confidence.?

Scheduling of our first league game is simply Sly Sports putting down a marker.

No logical basis for 4:30pm slot on Sunday.

Pathetic from a so-called large organisation.

Akin to behaviour of a masonic lodge trying to lord it over the businesses located either side of the hall.

I would like nothing better than Mikey to make it at Celtic and I hope his goal is realised.

He wore the hoops I didn’t

He is in the picture,I am looking at it

I know it must be hard but ignore the social media and its instant chopping of reputations etc, always reflecting only on the person never near mikeys standard.

It’s a cruel world in these days of Bosman, the onus as you’ll know from supporting him thro injury is on the player.

Don’t ever loose that pride,it is an awesome achievement.read these words.-He wore the hoops,

    Hail Hail

Not sure the words of ‘footballs coming home’ ever made sense. Neither does the FA not being called the English FA in many ways.

Both should be clear to anyone with a grasp of the history involved.

I would suggest that Sky have us as the main event directly after the Hungarian F1.

  16. Ref ‘let em come’

As someone who did go fairly regularly to the old Den for a brief period in my life I have to say it is weird seeing it sung in the sanitised new stadium.

It is a great anthem. I do agree.

Of course old guys like me would say it was even better ‘back then’ on the terraces.

As a vegetarian jellied eels we’re never my thing though.

  17. Ernie Lynch

It is clear to me that neither the FA now being called the FA and not the English FA is completely wrong and makes no sense. Neither does Football coming home to one of scores of countries who could claim to have invented it. Especially when it was singing about a trophy which was not even being competed for in 96. So yes I don’t get it because it makes no sense.

  18. Burnley 78

The FA were the first in the world hence no need to define it further.

A bit like Golf and the PGA

We are in THE prime football slot on sky this weekend for a home game.

This virtually never happens. I can’t ever recall it anyway.

Annoyingly it completely clashes with an unscheduled England womens European Final which is the problem. Had Spain held on for 6 minutes more last week no one would be tuning into the euro final tomorrow night.

Our audience will be even more reduced from normal away games as many Celtic fans will be at the game. In addition an early goal or two hopefully for us will see the Huns switch over also.

Unfortunate but not malevolent by sky imo. They are of course totally hunfiltrated though. That is for sure.

  20. Gene

My point is they are now no longer the governing body now just a regional entity.

Anyway it’s not a very interesting debate.

‘It is clear to me that neither the FA now being called the FA and not the English FA is completely wrong and makes no sense. ‘

It’s called the FA because of how the game as we know it started. Don’t have a problem with that and am wary of the motivation of those who do.

Ditto the song lyrics. It’s a song by and for England fans, not a jingoistic, aggressive or triumphalist declaration of supremacy, quite the opposite. The lyrics acknowledging all the failed attempts over the years make that clear.
