Missing Organ Grinder

1063

It took a late goal from Anthony Stokes to secure Celtic’s win at Tannadice in August.  That led to a five match unbeaten run for Dundee United, which ended two weeks ago at Pittodrie before Inverness knocked 10-man United out of the League Cup on Tuesday with a 120th minute goal.

Jackie McNamara has stabilised his team and they are likely to finish in the top three this season, but the defeat on Tuesday, which led to a storm of controversy over the behaviour of Nadir Ciftci, will be a major challenge ahead of United’s trip to Celtic Park.  The champions should win comfortably.

There was little glibness evident in The Herald’s sombre interview with Dave King, published this morning.  Despite apparently getting along famously with antagonists on either of Rangers International shareholding, he was unable to reach a deal, perhaps because he didn’t speak to the Organ Grinder behind the club playing in Rangers colours.

Indeed, neither King, nor anyone else trying to oust, or do a deal with, the current board, knows the ultimate beneficiary behind Blue Pitch Holdings et al.  Is it you?  It’s not me, but I suppose that’s what everyone is saying right now.

That question, is the only show in town.

King wrapped up his comments to The Herald by saying “Over the last two years we have all witnessed the destructive value when individuals, who should be putting the club first, advance personal agendas through the media in an attempt to influence the most important stakeholder in Rangers Football Club – the fans”.

Self-awareness is a rare thing.

Mr King is 100% correct on the destructive influence those who have divided his new favourite club have had.  Without the modestly self-named Blue Knights causing ultimately unproductive havoc, Charles Green’s consortium would surely not have over-paid and under-charged, leading to the situation King believes could lead to administration.  The question now for those on the outside is, do they have the votes, or are they just peeing on the Broxy Bear Burgers?

    Good Morning All.

No Celtic Park for me today I’m afraid as the family are gathering to celebrate my Father’s 86 Birthday.

My dad started going to Celtic Park from Clydebank about 70 years ago now, and when I think of that and try to comprehend the number of players he has seen over that period of time, it is actually quite hard to take in.

At one time, we ran the bus from Whitecrook, and for the princely sum of 1d per week you could go to every home and away game in Scotland no matter how far the journey or day of the week.

I might just get him to write a wee piece on that for the next but one CQN Magazine– and see if he could pick out his all time favourite 11 from over that 70 years.

Speaking of CQN Magazine– I think it is only fair for me to point out to everyone what a huge amount of work Paul and The Winning Captains do behind the scenes for nit just the blog but for the various productions and events linked to te site.

It is only in the last couple of months that I have come to realise just how much work and time goes into this, and I can say honestly that both of them work on various things well into the night and e-mail in the wee small hours after midnight covering this or that for the site is not uncommon.

As you are all aware the 2014 CQN Magazine Annual is now available for purchase, and this year it contains some completely new content as well as highlights from the magazine over the last 12 months. With 288 pages, it is a cracking gift especially for those who do not enjoy Celtic over the internet such as my dad.

The Celtic Internet family is very vibrant with lots of different sites and resources, however over the coming year we are hoping to be able to do some innovative things with the magazine and book productions than in the past.

We are already close to completing “Seville” and are looking at a CQN 10year anniversary dinner for early 2014 which we hope to be able to announce the details of soon. Going by the current discussions, the dinner will raise some money for charity, be a celebration of the site and will be………..different……… to most dinners.

I will say no more for the moment.

The November edition of CQN Magazine is almost complete, but work has already started for the January issue with some interesting.. and again different….. features lined up.

Hopefully, all of this will provide some entertainment, discussion points and information for those who regularly participate in the blog or for those who just come on for a read.

Best of luck to the bhoys today, and to those going to Paul Larkin’s book launch tonight.

I am away to talk Celtic with my Da — and my three sons, my daughter, My sister, Niece, nephew, brother in law, and of course my Ma.

For those of you who don’t know where Whitecrook is it’s close tae Yoker Station which is actually in Clydebank whereas Garscadden Station is in Yoker :-)))

You touch on something I did not in the interest of brevity.Where exactly is the tipping point between prudence and ambition in terms of a weekly wage?

Is it a gradient to be climbed or a leap of faith to be made? I dont think anyone has the magic formula to provide the right answer often enough to make a leap of faith driven by ambituon a risk worth taking in terms of the downside to the shaking of the wage structure or the return on taking that decision.

How much further than the last 16 or Europe after Christmas would a player in a wages structure bursting bracket take us?

Larsson is a good example of when to pay more which is when you have a player head and shoulders above the rest (and I’m not meaning Sammy who might be entering that phase in his development) that his fellow pros recognise the value to them in win bonuses if not actuall admiration or affection that paying more has the opposite effect to what Stokes and Lenny spoke in terms of squad morale.

Ideally the extra income should be paid on raising the level of the wage structure overall so that we sign and keep our better players, but we are competing with a neighbour who because of TV revenue can simply offer more for a player who values the money more than playing for a phenomenon in world football terms which means that even if the wage structure level is raised we still cannot hold on to our best.

Would it were otherwise but until it is I’d rather the extra dosh was spent on scouting and development and finding other income streams than taking a punt with little prospect of a positive return.

If that approach was producing a poor and unsuccessful team I would say time to rethink, but we are capable of attractive football and competing with the very best and I am very grateful for that.

I’m delighted with Neil as our manager and hope he stays put for a long time to come. It IS fun, however, to speculate on a successor to Neil should he ever leave Celtic for whatever reason. Someone mentioned above that John Kennedy was being developed (in a Boot Room manner)to fulfill the managerial role in future. I hadn’t thought of that but think it is a really good idea. Jackie, in the way that he is progressing at the moment, would also be worthy of consideration but I suppose it will depend on how Celtic are performing at the time the job becomes vacant. If we are doing well consistently in Europe, it may necessitate someone with that type of experience.

On Stokesy I was in your camp most of last season. I could take his moaning but not his inability to retain possession under pressure and sometimes under none.

But since the Cup Final his all round performance has improved so I can understand a new contract but I am looking for the development to continue.

Many a young man has started to develop and mature in their mid twenties as they start to pay attention to where life is directing them.

Congratulations to your Dad and hope you have a good day.

My Dad is 72 and doesn’t get to many games nowadays but is still as passionate about those green & White hooped jerseys as he was as a young man.

I have learned not to go near him when we are defeated as I know exactly the greeting I will get…..’ Imposters , just imposters ‘ ! Is the usual cry.

And I guess to him that’s right in comparison to some of the greats he has seen in 60 odd years of support.

I agree we should tap into their memories and record them.

I am sure these things are priceless.

Anyway, enjoy today and give your auld fella a big Celtic hug!!

I agree that it is a very difficult balance to achieve. However, I feel that signing, for example, Finbogasson falls more into the category of ‘calculated risk’ rather than ‘gamble’. I am happy for the extra income to be spent on scouting and development. We spend money on that area each year as a matter of course and some of the extra money should be spent to improve that. What I am trying to say is that over the last year or so we have taken in an inordinate amount of money – for Celtic – in terms of CL money and transfers ( starting with Ki). I know there is wastage with signings that don’t work out but if there was ever a time for Celtic to take a punt, surely this is it?

Incidentally, I’m not talking about shelling out £10 million or anything near that on players.

  19. BRTH, have a good one with your Dad.

Your story reminded me of my own auld yin (passed on for some years now) and when I had started going regularly to Celtic Park. I was brought up on stories of McGrory, the Thomsons, Geatons, then the Empire Exhibition Cup, etc. By 1966 I was telling him what Jock was doing and urging him to come back to the games, but no way was he leaving his comfortable seat. Then the European Cup run started and eventually he relented and I got him a ticket for the Vojvodina game. Here was me, a 17 year old proud as hell getting his dad to come along to see this special team. Well, entering the last minute tied at 1 – 1as it was, then Big Billy nuttered in the winner and Celtic park went ballistic. My lasting memory is one of overpowering ecstacy from the fans and one loud, piercing scream from my dad as some big guy lifted him off the ground by his hair (thick Irish hair he was blessed with, even in his 70’s).

The journey home and he agreed it was a great occasion and a great team, but that he would NEVER be going back. And he didn’t. But he still followed the team he brought me up to support ’till his dying day.

These Sevcovites are trying to separate the club from the team of football players, what exactly is this club thingamyjig if the footballers aren’t an integral part if it? Poppycock!
