Modest European targets should never be accommodated

183

The joy and ecstasy of others as they celebrate a Champions League win reminds us of what football is all about.  Crafting a team, these days from across the globe, capable of holding their nerve against Messi, riding their luck occasionally, and seeing it through in the end.  No Liverpool fans cared about the quality of the occasion in Madrid on Saturday, finals are about winning, as a few Celtic fans remarked the previous week.

The celebrations of a club 200 miles to the south did make me feel disenfranchised, though.  We were once what they are now, and we can never be the same again, due to the way TV contracts are written.

These days our European targets are more modest, but we should still plan for more than we have had in the last couple of decades.  If nothing else, it is better to fail planning to succeed, than to modestly accept a 7-0 reversal as an indication of the way it has to be.

The now famous Andy Robertson tweet from 18 August 2012 was clear, “#needajob.” The less-aspirational Newco were also in dire straights that day, but celebrated a 5-1 win over East Stirlingshire.  Andy was earning less that every one of the East Stirlingshire players that day, but he won a Champions League before either club won a major trophy.  We might never win the Champions League again, but we need to do everything in our power to get close, without taking console in domestic wins.

I refer you to my earlier post.

It was nothing to do with whether he had or hadn’t recruited anyone.

BADA-I know mate ,I’ve seen them.

But if there true then how unprofessional are we ?

  3. fairhill bhoy on

FTW-no problem, picked you up wrong, but it does seam that PL hasn’t got an eye for a manager that might challenge his position has head honcho ?

  4. fairhill bhoy on

BADA-I’ve seen it mate,to be fair there’s not a lot on that list to worry about

Celtic mac- bedtime so I will catch your take on KTs unprofessional behaviour ??

    No sweat.

DD may well have put feelers out to whoever to see if they might be interested but it would be down to the CEO to get them over the line etc.

MON, WGS & BR were all strong willed men who knew their own worth & knew what they wanted to do at Celtic, though MON would have been at Celtic for three years before PL became CEO.

NFL is also strong willed etc just the other three.

  7. fairhill bhoy on

FTW-Good spot regarding MON being there before PL. ?

But you would have to think if DD wanted a manager, then no matter what the obstacles were PL would know to make it happen.Although I’m writing that and I’m still thinking nah,PL had hee haw to do with any of it.Just my opinion.defo bedtime now ?

I could have produced that document in my tea break

The contents are not the issue

If we have a leak that big it should be waved at Welsh Rugby games

Just don’t forget how the entire Establishment is moving against us – the ten must be stopped at all costs, those who have stooped low will become subterranean (to name check a much loved and missed poster)

Never underestimate the flannel which the dark side can weave.

Gentlemen according to the list Dermot Desmond attended the discussion so I would venture to suggest it’s bollocks imho?

  10. FTW @ 4.30

BR was a DD / Irish Raj production.

They are very easy to spot as they involve a well regarded money on big wages.

  11. We now have two DD’s in the club.

    DaD = Coach.

DD = Irish Raj / Absentee landlord.

If the document is real then we really are low rent.

Not even up to the standard of a local council’s cleansing department.

As I mentioned earlier football in the UK used to be run by the local butcher / baker / candlestick-maker done good.

Now it is run by second rate property bean counters on a power trip.

Beyond parody how poorly managed and organised we are at the moment.

I fear that the same event a year earlier caused all the issues that broke us over the summer.

We had our high value sell list — unfortunately the highest offer was for KT and not MD as expected.

No matter — surely people will up their game in the face of almost universal ridicule.

At least the document will help with the leak inquiry — the doodles must be recognisable.

  12. As far as I see it, there’s only 3 possible outcomes from the ‘leaked transfer dossier’

    1) it’s fake. And most could knock that up with any form of tech and a printer. Probably a hun with agenda trying to dish up a ‘mole’ at Celtic story

    2) it’s real and been leaked. This would be an issue. I don’t think it is based on our past performances, we’re a tight ship.

    3) it’s real and the club have chosen for it to be leaked. Spread interest? Get the feel good back as there are some good names there and not many would argue with the ‘outs’. Get rumours going? Deflect from real targets etc, etc

Who are LSL, MN and TMCK

Think mad Mitch (mm) might have done the minutes….?

    ?? Hail Hail T3

Hello again all you young rebels.

    Anybody fancy a list?

No, didn’t think so lol, that last one just grew and grew.

But it just shows you how many people actually use this

wonderful forum and enjoy the debates from some very

    knowledgable posters.

Others maybe don’t have a lot to write about but they

added their name to what was a bit of fun to keep us going

    till the fitbaw starts again.

Congrats to FLEAGLE our furthest away Celt and i might even

get to buy him a pint in Beautiful Aukland if my princess

gets her wish to sail on the high seas again.

Another congratulations to our big rebel and music man

Ritchie McKay and his newborn son Dylan Oscar Mckay

Welcome to the Celtic family Dylan.

  14. In my above post I put a 3 instead of three.

    On reflection 3 x three = 9 ✅

That’s trophies ? won on the trot ✅

The number of league titles ? we are heading for this year ?

We’ve won 27 domestic cup games on the trot ✅

    27 / 3 = 9 ?

    Love Celtic

    Hail Hail ????

  15. The document must be kosher — any high value players or potential high value players then PL does the talking.

No wonder we don’t have a growth agenda — our CEO is never off the phone talking to agents.

    Oz Celts.

Just a wee update on our gowfing challenge against PADDY ON THE PENINSULA

Paddy’s versus the Jock’s at the Dunes club Sun. 7 July.

$ 95 includes cart and lunch at the Dunes.

    Think thats a great deal.

Only a couple of places left.

But for someone like me who’d be a world champion at smashin baws into a lake

I’ll just sit and celebrate another new wee member of the Celtic family, Dylan.

Details on the Social Celts Mornington facebook thingy.

Hi Mick, just clocked you before I cot down. I’m getting better and better results every visit to the nurse. I’m walking normally again after 8 months of agony. As far as golf goes, not a scoobie of the game or the rules. Anyhoo I hope it is a great success. ?????Hh

  18. Melbourne Mick,

Thank you so much buddy for your comment. It means a lot. I’ve had the worse and most painful time of my life for the past 8 months. Leg ulcers which you would not wish on your worse enemy. Housebound for three months with the District nurse attending daily. Not amusing. Thankfully all behind me and looking forward to following our beloved Celtic again. HH

Can.t wait for those 38 deg days again 13 degs today and looks like we’re

saving up water for the summer with all the rain, but our dams were empty

    so need to stop whinging.

Don.t know the exact area my son visits to work in PNG, but it’s where they produce

some well known soft drinks and he said it’s middle of nowhere and guarded

by people with guns, so not really exotic.

He’s just left Fiji on a coupla flights to get there, so just like his auld man, have work

    will travel, and needs must.

I’ts a shame he’s not on here now and there’s a kind of split in

    the two blogs attitude.

But i always think it’s a rebel thingy and even back in the day

the Celtic fans were split and even worse attacked each other at

the Celtic end with us wee tims the bravest of them all darting

in between them to grab the unsmashed screwtaps.
