Mr Green and his invidious meetings

739

Information leaked from Charles Green that he is due to meet Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell today.  I’ve no idea if it’s true (sooo many wrong steers from over there) but, if accurate, it puts our man in an invidious position.  Mr Green appears generous when reviewing the success of meetings.

At his infamous ‘Blood on their hands’ press conference, would-be-pope-of-Ibrox, Brian Kennedy, told us “HMRC will not agree to a CVA until the very last minute”.  Why would they?  We believe Green has offered £8.5m but he has spoken about having raised £20m.  If HMRC are negotiating at all (and I have my doubts) they will want as much of that £20m as possible, and I’m sure they will, as Mr Kennedy suggested, wait until the very last minute before agreeing to anything (they won’t, b.t.w.).

None of this matters to Mr Green, he can say HMRC told him they’ll scrub the debt if he paints the Blue Room pink and no one can contradict him.  He is likely to be looking for some comfort from Mr Lawwell but I am sure he will be told that Celtic are unable to support any measure to parachute a Newco into the SPL (after his CVA fails, which it will).  Mr Green, who is also trying to maintain the support of the backers needed to commit cash by Friday, will almost certainly emerge from the meeting uttering words like “constructive”, “helpful” or maybe even “very positive”.

He is wasting his time.  Words like “sobering”, “alarming” and “downright obstinate” might be closer to the truth.

  4. An Fear Dearg,

Pretty good summary – although I think Sally had it away with the Chewits.

The ‘moving the deadlines back’ game is all about having someone else kill the huns. No one wants to incur the wrath of their fans. They all want to be able to say that they tried but someone else did it.

The goal of the footballing authorities right now is to avoid taking any decisions until the CVA is rejected and the club is liquidated. That was it was the creditors what dun it guv.

The newco scenario is the tricky one. We all know they can rewrite the rules and could probably get clubs to support the newco in a vote. But the longer all of this goes on, the shorter time there is for a newco to get into the position to be ready for the start of next season.

Chewits were first advertised on television in 1976. The original advertisements featured the ‘Monster Muncher’, a Godzilla-resembling mascot on the hunt for something chewy to eat. The first ad featuring the Muncher threatening New York was made by French Gold Abbott and created by John Clive and Ian Whapshot. The first ad was so successful the sequel was delayed. The ‘Monster Muncher’ chomps and tramples humorously local and well-known international landmarks such as Barrow-in-Furness Bus Depot, a London block of flats, Ibrox Stadium, the Taj Mahal, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Empire State Building. The ‘Monster Muncher’ could only be quelled by a pack of Chewits.

Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon, with hindsight, the chewit comment was a bit ambitious!

I’ve long maintained licensing could be the boring but vital cog in the process that would finally trip them up. And it might also allow the SFA/SPL to blame UEFA (“them big boys in Nyon made us do it!”).

And not only could it be the reason that RFA(IA) 1872 loses its SPL place (before the CAV is rejected and club is liquidated), but it also ought to be the reason that NewRangers 2012 is refused a place in the SPL next season. With no three years’ worth of accounts it can’t obtain a UEFA licence for three years and that alone ought to be the reason newclub is banished to Division 3 (with apologies to the current teams in the league, obviously).

  8. An Fear Dearg,

And the SFA cannot make an exception to the three year rule, only UEFA can. But why would it?

If it is a new club then it should be treated exactly the same as any other new club would be.

Some time back I was ‘Facilities Manager’ for/of a USA based corporate entity, oil and gas support, aiming to break into the billion dollar a year turnover club. I helped them get close to achieving that goal.

Our manufacturing facility in the Middle East (was set up to) put us close to ‘our customers’ in order to make timely delivery of quality products……Aye right, that was the main reason.

Anyway, as the only trade unionist (and the boss) in said facility (of +150), I had some difficulty squaring the circle so to speak of the ‘competitive’ wages/salaries being paid to all of the wealth creators (not me, of course, I was reasonably well remunerated) …………….

The mix was, Scots, English, Canadian, Dutch, Chinese. Philippino/a, Indian, Nepalese, Pakistani…….

Always tried to make it a point be on the shop-floor before first tea-break and one day, one of the guys says to me ‘Boss, going home next week for vacation (first time in four years) and just want to say thanks from me and mine’

By way of reply, just made some remark like ‘Good pal, just hope you have saved enough coin to treat your family to a wee celebration while you are back Ghordan’………..

Big smile and then……’for sure Boss, have four kids at private school, my wee shop is thriving and the seven acre farm provides us with all and more (we need) to feed the extended family. People in the village look up to me, I’m respected for my drive to succeed’………..

Thought – good for you pal, and went back to my office and after minimizing CQN, checked on the web. Turns out the wee man was being paid circa 50 times the national minimum wage for his troubles/inconvenience and being apart from his family. Different cultures, different values, and for me, wrong to judge………

Levelling up ( rather than down) is surely the way forward…………. And please, don’t view this as a an apologist polemic for the wrongs and exploitation of multi-nationals. Just a wee anecdote re the hope for a brighter future, universally, for the machine room football strip makers et al…………

as others have pointed out on here the very fact the SPL are contemplating ‘transferring the share’, by definition makes it a new club – why would the old club be ‘transferring’ the share to itself. The only possible conceivable reason for shoehorning newclub into the SPL is financial considerations by misguided clubs. But even if they want to, I still think licensing should trip them up. Never mind the fact that they’re currently taking their national association to court…

  18. Rangers have not yet met the necessary criteria to play in the Scottish Premier League in the 2012/13 season.

STV can reveal the league’s board has responded to the club’s request for a “period of grace”, in order to submit audited accounts and adhere to the SPL’s financial disclosure requirements.

SPL rules allow for a time extension to be granted and Rangers have been given until mid-June to satisfy the rules, having missed the original March 31 deadline.

A spokesperson for the league told STV: “Rangers FC made an application for a period of grace in terms of SPL Rule A2.7 in which to provide certain documents required by the SPL Financial Disclosure Requirements.

“The SPL Board granted a period of grace until Friday 15 June 2012 for the documentation to be provided. The matter will be reviewed further at that time.”

Appendix three (Financial Disclosure Requirements) of the SPL rules state member clubs “are required to comply with…all of the Finance Criteria in section eight of the Scottish FA’s national club licensing manual”.

Although clubs do not need to be in possession of a Scottish FA national club license, the SPL’s rules clearly state they must comply with the governing body’s criteria in the area of financial disclosure.

Rangers, to date, have not yet met the criteria as they have not provided audited accounts for the year ending 2011.

To satisfy the SPL’s membership criteria to play in the division, clubs must comply with the financial disclosure requirements of the league.

The SPL board has the power, contained within rule A2.7, to relax the criteria when it deems it applicable, stating: “The board may in its absolute discretion waive, relax or grant a period of grace in respect of any club’s or candidate club’s requirement to comply with any part of the membership criteria and/or rules A2.6 and H6.1.”

If a club which is already a member of the league fails to meet the membership criteria, the SPL is able to impose any sanction it sees fit from its list of potential punishments, which range from a fine or censure to expulsion from the division.

The decision to punish Rangers if they ultimately fail to meet the membership criteria would be decided by a general meeting of all SPL clubs.

While their own rules may well give them the power to do the things listed above, if I were the SPL Board I’d be looking over my shoulder in the direction of Nyon, and second guessing what M. Platini’s reaction might be. Especially at a point in time where the club seeking the licensing rules to be relaxed/waived/completely ignored and thrown in the bin was also the very same club taking its national association through the civil courts…
