New club/same club. What if the boot was on the other foot?

754

I’ve dipped in and out of the online debate on Scottish football this week. Can’t believe how much has been written on the new club/same club debate. To what end?

If the boot was on the other foot, and Celtic were liquidated in 2012, my relationship with post-liquidation Celtic would be my business only. I’d have no interest in anyone else’s view on the status of Celtic. I am emotionally invested in Celtic, so would be happy to accept any ‘same club’ theory as fact, and would have no motivation in listening to any contrary view on the matter.

Similarly, under the same scenario, there’s not a ‘Rangers’ fan alive who would consider a scenario, with an insolvency practitioner considering whether to let newly formed Cevco 5088 use the name Celtic for their football team, and conclude: “Yip, that’s the same Celtic that started back in 1888, whether they get permission to call themselves Celtic or not”.

It’s lunacy and an insult to all our intelligence to suggest otherwise. I’ve yet to meet a ‘Rangers’ fan who could tell me with a straight face that they would be calling Celtic the same club under if the situation was reversed.  In fact, they have openly admitted they would be filling their boots on the subject.

The critical moment in Craig Whyte’s plan was achieved when Duff and Phelps were appointed as administrators, who would subsequently be in a position not to object to a newco calling itself Rangers, as Airdrieonians administrators and liquidators stopped Airdrie United using the name from 2002 until 2013.  Declining to object at Companies House to the use of name was a arbitrary act by an administrator, but it was critical to Whyte’s plan to sell tens of thousands of season tickets.

‘Rangers’ fans, however, can believe what they like, no matter what Uefa wrote. All other football fans will point to this huge liquidation event and hear no more on the matter.

You’re not going to convince one ‘Rangers’ fan, who believes they support the same club that was liquidated, that they are wrong. Why should they deny themselves the history and traditions of their club (OK, I’m at it here, but you know what I mean). Don’t waste your time, you’ll convince no one who doesn’t want to be convinced.

Similarly, if Newco Rangers win 51 of the next 100 titles, and Aberdeen win the other 49, when they recall their remarkable achievements, some Motherwell fan will pop up and say, “Aye, but you let our club die”.

For a century or more, if they survive that long, ‘Rangers’ will pitch up to games and hear “Glasgow Rangers, you let your club die”, up and down the country. Just as you’re wasting your time trying to convince a ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t want to be convinced otherwise, the liquidation of Rangers in 2012 will forever be marked when a club with that name takes the field. Forever. It’s not going to stop. Anywhere.

All efforts to expunge this notion from the nation’s consciousness have only raised awareness of the detail of the liquidation.

You and I have been talking about Cognitive Dissonance for a decade. It’s the phenomenon when an individual is caused discomfort by an apparent fact which runs contrary to a cherished belief. It’s what you’re seeing and reading in the sameco coverage, and could have been written for these great times to be a Celtic supporter.

Enjoy the game; serve moderate helpings of Cognitive Dissonance.

  1. Haven’t had the time to look back over the blog but whether it’s accepted or not that they died in the public (and controlled) arena of the smsm, the filth that supports the huns is largely the same. I want to see them suffer. CYBIG.

I feel that later today we’re in for a game much like the recent home tie v the Israelis: Nerve-shredding. Wet the bedding. Poor defending. Colon decending. Fast-paced attacking. Cohesion-lacking. Huns sent a-packing.

Woke up at 3 bliddy 40. What’s that about?

I really hope that the survivors of Ronny’s team show that they can actually handle the weight of our expectation and finally fill those shirts with help from Kolo and Scotty S.

Meet the new Hun, same as the old Hun.

If we approach this game with the right attitude, we will win.

Cmon Celtic, let’s show this mob up for what they are.

    Too true…

We should play to our strengths today, be patient if necessary and over the ninety minuted secure the three points…

  8. The first 15 minutes will be the key indicator as to how this match will end.

We MUST take the game to them, dominate from the outset, not allow them time, and not allow them to gain confidence that they can pass the ball around.

If we can do that from the off, it’s going to be a long afternoon for them, and a day to remember for us.

  10. I reckon 3-0 today.

Since the last time we played them, we have improved significantly, and they seemed to have declined.

We are now significantly stronger in attack and in defence. I’m not sure their defenders can live with Sinclair/Paddy/Leigh (if fit). Or Moussa.

Brown, Rogic, and Forrest have improved.

Indeed, their best attacking option is their full back- pin him back and they really lose their attacking threat.

We also have a manager who has the ability to change things mid-match. They appear to have one plan, and one plan only.

  11. Just in from waking up the larks.

Heading for the Flamingo in Santa Ponsa today. Although I realise the team died – their zombiefied remains stagger on, which gives me every reason to be there to cheer on the Celts. Hit them for six…..with a baseball bat Oh yeah!

  13. You may have read this before but in the (self) interest of allowing more of you to read it without scrolling back, here is a shameless repost of my drivel from last night.

No complacency from me, but I have considered the options and can only conclude the following…

The Rangers have a problem with lack of pace in the middle of defence; namely Hill and Senderos (assume he plays).

Therefore, if Rangers push up they expose themselves to the speed of Sinclair, Forrest, Roberts, Griff (if he plays).

They can’t take that risk, they will suffer big style. The more / earlier we score the more it would exacerbate the situation.

So, they have to sit back and try and hit us on the break. This is not their natural game and although Toure and Erik are not roadrunners, they are no slouch. Certainly less of a slouch than say, Waghorn. Forrester may have pace, but Tiereny / Gamboa would be able to deal with that. Lustig not so.

So they sit back. It gives us possession, allows Sinclair and Roberts / Forrest to take men on with impunity. Attacking downs the flanks will cause holes in the middle, which Rogic, Brown and Bitton (or Christie) could exploit for themselves or to play in Griff / Dembele, even Sinclair who tends to become no. 9 at times.

Again, if we score early and more than once, that means they have to come out, thus exposing them to the earlier problem.

So, the only fly in the ointment? We don’t take our chances, it remains 0-0 for too long. They sneak a goal (dubious pen, free kick, offside, foul or heaven forbid a corner).

That gives them something to rally to. And further inexplicable misses, goals ruled out, free kick imagined, could see us unable to win – it’s happened before; too many times before.

In summary, it looks an 80% chance of a win of more than two goals, 10% chance of a one goal win, 5% chance of a draw and nae chance of a loss (I’m keeping the other 5%)

  14. In the supermarket 20 mins ago. 3 Sevcoites behind me:

Hate to stereotype but if the hat fits………

  15. My two boys are going today, one has a foot injury so I’m going to drop them near to the ground then go to my mum’s to watch the game. She lives near Bridgeton Cross.

I will open the window and expect to hear the roar accompanying a Celtic goal multiple times.

    Hail, Hail.

Hope you all have an enjoyable day and more importantly a safe one.

A big banner with “Are you a Hun ” on it and a big bloody arrow pointing at them.

Anyway folks as I’ve said before I’m off to watch the team my wee da brought me up to support.

Stay safe everyone and remember the Zombies hate us more than we pity them. Win lose or draw they will be out for our blood its all they know.

  17. Happy Saturday to all.

I’m getting geared up to leave EK for the game and Jobo’s going for a run. CQN’s very own Francis Drake playing bowls. I’m loving your style, JB.

Quietly confident we’ll skelp this wee plucky new club, making its debut at CP.

  18. For me I’d be delighted today with a 2-0 win but in the style of our league cup semi final win against them – i.e. score 2, play keep-th-ba’ and finish the game without theme having a sinlge attempt on target. The smaile over the next few days listening to the ‘not much between the teams’ claims.

Having said that I believe we may be as high as 9/1 to win by 4 or more……..

When I say snippet it was the New Hun Hugh Keevins squirming horrible a rotary voice saying something along the lines of, It’d be wrong for Celtic to remember Big before today’s game. I switched over at that. I can only assume some stupid Celtic fan made a call to ask if there was to be something or some Hun Orc had did the same.
