Newco goes into full regressive mode

782

Football clubs find it difficult to maintain a positive brand image that not only helps its commercial imperative, but binds fans ever-closer and attracts new supporters.  There is always some idiot doing something idiotic that neither the club, nor the support as a whole, would even remotely tolerate.

As a consequence, fans across the country sigh at news reports when someone punches a horse, throws a bottle or generally behaves in a manner that defies the struggles their genetic make-up went through to be here today.  Darwin suggested it should not be this way, but here we are.

When a club’s name is associated with some random act of idiocy, a well-known script is followed.  Suspend the culprit and hope it is glossed-over by many, if not, publicly state disapproval while giving the obligatory “tiny minority” sop to the rest of the support, to let them know you have their back, whether it is a tiny minority or not, or even a minority.

Employee-transgressors are almost universally and immediately sacked.  The chef who got drunk and wrote someone on social media that would never be said sober, has supreme-d his last chicken at the club restaurant.

This is harsh, but them’s the rules.  Clubs want to attract everyone in the family, hospitality business and commercial partner spheres.  Negative publicity, however tenuous, has to be curated through the ‘What would Walt (Disney) Do?’ prism.

So when a club diverges from this path, you’re left wondering why?  Why would a club appoint a DUP councillor and Orangeman, inevitably with all of the baggage that world brings, as their public relations manager?

Today’s revelation in the Daily Record, that Newco’s new PR man, David Graham, referring to Celtic Park as “the piggery”, a few days after his “No surrender” video emerged, will surprise no one.  Do not blame a duck for quaking, material like this is inevitably going to seep out.

But why do Newco want to be represented like this?  Why challenge the modern sports business orthodoxy of appealing to families, high-value corporate spend and big ticket commercial deals?  There is a constituency that will always stay loyal to those with values they share, irrespective of football success or general competency in any other area.

They are circling the wagons ahead of a ‘business interruption event’, either that, or they are the stupidest of stupid people who ever made it through 250k years of largely progressive genetic selection.  No one sailing home on HMS Beagle could predict such a regressive wonder as this lot.

Wash your hands, isolate the vulnerable. If you are vulnerable and need food, shop at quiet times and do not touch your face until you wash your hands at home.  Most of us will get through this, but all of us need to act for those who might not.

  1. Wife made some cakes for the grandsons – took them up and dropped them at the “plague stones” aka the patio table. Chatted through the patio doors – surreal.

I can hear it now “I got the coronavirus because the government didn’t lock me down” – sometime people need to take responsibility.

Yep, that’s definitely going to be the line that Johnson will go for. Personally I’d jail the bastard for criminal incompetence. You’ve got frontline medical staff not being given the right protective gear ffs endangering not only their lives but the future patients they will be unable to treat when they themselves are ill.

  3. Seen a graph earlier .. comparing the infection rates with the UK now, and Italy at the start of their pandemic .. the numbers were more or less identical ..

    If there’s no lockdown soon?

Scotlands testing people at 1.4 the UK rate.. Rest of the UK now has more identified cases and a death rate nearly 3 times that of Scotland.

Boris and Trumpet.. are both narcissistic, capatilist psychopaths!

You’ve moved the discussion – absolutely agree with your comment on lack of resource – however if people need to be forced to distance themselves when all the evidence is there well…..

  5. Do I think there should be a lockdown – absolutely – do I think people also have a responsibility – absolutely

  6. Time will tell if the UK government in conjunction with the devolved government’s have made the right decisions. God willing they have.

We must trust the science and medical advisors to give us the correct guidance applicable to the specific demographic. I couldn’t give a monkey’s f@ck what they look like, providing they give sound information.

Of course economics comes into the equation which also needs to evaluate the twin killers of stress and mental health.

I think I have witnessed to date the greatest socialist policies ever instigated by a Chancellor, but we will need even more, especially for the self employed that cannot make a living.

Our cherished and iconic NHS is finally being resourced and treated with the respect it is due.

Many companies and institutions have and will step up to the mark, including our own club Celtic. We all have a part to play, let’s focus on that and God willing allied with science we will prevail.

    HH to all.

  9. Our local wetherspoons has given their food to local charities – including our foodbank – otherwise it would be binned. Most of the stuff is frozen micro-meals so that’s gone to nurses quarters as it needs to be eaten soon.

  11. Hats off to Roy. A couple of days ago, Ross County Chairman MacGregor guaranteed continuing to pay players in the coming months. Contrast this with the situation at Hearts. Typical Edinburgh.

  12. Greatest socialist policies, my bahookie! It was to stave of economic meltdown in a matter of weeks.. sunac had no option but to offer workers salaries.. the faux compassion and empathy, makes ma blood boil!

Once is this over and they’re clawing the money back .. let’s see how socialist the chancellor really is?

I’m self employed .. already struggled through the winter because of the constant rain .. there’s no way I’m going near a brew office, for a giro of they feckers!

  13. with society now being so materialistic and much importance put on (whatever they have I want) it’s the worst of some people coming out and there is thousands and thousands of them and it won’t change. We need strong leadership, of course people need to take responsibility for their own actions but if we wait for that there will be a helluva lot mor dead.

Just be a leader and LOCKDOWN the feckin UK and try and stop this horrible virus.

I think they’re trying to recreate the spirit of wartime – as you say the difference is that back then they had very little compared with I want it now attitude.

  15. UK Figures for positive cases can’t be accurate. Think they are close to 5,000 with 233 deaths.

In Ireland we are closing in on 1,000 positive with 3 deaths.

    Can’t be right.

  17. Lockdown may be necessary, the public are being primed for it.

If we had gone into Lockdown immediately without a phased schedule,we would have had army and armed police on our streets for enforcement. Conflict would have been inevitable.

Can you imagine the outcry on here if we had put the army in immediately. ?

  19. Hi Bhoys

I don’t see the government assistance with wages as a new brilliant first time ever idea. I can’t remember the exact year but it was late 70’s early 80’s. We were put on a 3 day week. The company I worked for then put the factory on a week on week off basis with half of us in one week and the other half the next. On my week off I had to report to the work on a thursday afternoon were I was paid in cash (no banking wages in those days). I was paid 75% of my wage for the week I didn’t work and i’m pretty sure it was the government that paid it. So sorry boris it’s not a first.

Reading back I was dismayed to see a self professed Christian PETEC describing someone as a “Knobend and a Coward”.

I will say this to you PETEC with the best of intentions…………..

Inasmuch as ye do it to one of these the least of my bretheren, ye do it to me. Attributed to Christ.

So are you really calling The Christ a Knobend and a Coward?

I feel I am being consumed by this virus, and all the things to prevent me and my loved ones getting it, that coupled with being responsible for 73 employees and trying to keep them safe, thinking about PPE, RAMS, Category 3 Employees, questions about pay, what’s happening blah blah blah.

Your wife hiding your trousers reminded me of an episode some 40 odd years ago, 3 Brothers from Donegal in our village all had sons called Owen among many others. To differentiate between them 1,was butcher Owen 2, Big Owen and 3, was mad Owenie . Mad Owenie was the last of his family to still be home with his mother, Owenie was in our darts team all working class Celtic fans 6 of us, The league matches were played on a Monday night , and this particular night we were playing the golf club from the nearby town ,socially a good couple of classes above us one of them was a showjumper another a Vet. Strict rules all team to be there for kick off 8.15. The publican told us that Owenie had the day off and had been drinking heavy all afternoon only leaving at 5.30 to go home for his dinner as his mum was going to bingo at six pm. Anyway boys all warming up no sign of Owenie by. 8.10 we had resigned ourselves to forfeiting a couple of games , at 8.12 the pub door bursts open and in staggers Owenie wearing 1 wellies and 1 slipper (his mum hid all of his shoes when he fell asleep before she went to bingo) the look on the faces of the golf club guys was priceless. All 3 Owen’s died young but all were fantastic guys RIP three.HH

  25. Some excellent and readable stuff tonight lhads and lhassies. Some real informative stuff as well. Ta.

Could I ask a favour, make a suggestion? Could we stop using the christian name to refer to the fud in No. 10? I have always felt that there some respect when using an individual’s first name so for me, mine and all those I speak to ‘Johnstone’ is good enough. I mean no-one surely would refer to THAT prick as ‘Donald’?

BTW well done to Celtic for the charity announcent. I don’t know if the earlier ref to the Soosiders handing out a couple of bottles of disinfectant was a bit tongue in cheek, but it gave me a wee laugh.
