No deal for Celtic and Roberts as both look elsewhere

884

After edging ever-closer to a deal for weeks, it looks certain Patrick Roberts will not be playing for Celtic next season. You are well-aware Celtic have been desperate to secure his permanent signing from Manchester City, but I have it on good authority that the club and player are now looking elsewhere.

Brendan Rodgers has both budget and ambition for the season ahead and Patrick was a big part of those plans, but the manager has now moved attention elsewhere (and I don’t mean to Aberdeen).

Patrick blossomed here, in particular during the second half of last season. He is an entertainer in the great Celtic tradition, but I have confidence in the manager to deliver what is required for the challenges ahead.

We wish Patrick all the best and thank him for a great 18 months.

Add Scott and Mc.Millan and you have a forward line equal to Hibs’ Famous Five.

  5. Question about Jonny Hayes –

All the pundits seem to be talking about him as back-up or competition for Forrest and filling the same hole as Patrick Roberts…

Re 1958-59 team: Whilst agreeing with most of TT’s recollections, mine are slightly different.I always ‘feared’ Ralph Brand getting on the ball as he did the ‘business’ and Millar the ‘work’

Jonny Hayes can play on either wing, he has also played centre midfield and left back for Aberdeen over the last couple of years.

  11. A massive welcome to Johnny Hayes.I would think during the course of the season he will be an inspired signing.A long, long season ahead, hopefully, and a player like Johnny, who can, take on and beat men, score goals, and will do the hard stuff like track back and help defenders, will be invaluable. Can play right or left wing.

    Bobby Evens!!!

Bobby Evans was my first “favourite” player.

I remember a headline in the Daily Express after another Scotland defeat at Wembley.

Bobby stood between a defeat and a humiliation.

The big film that year was Gigi and the big song was Maurice Chevalier singing, ” Thank Heaven For Little Girls”.

The headline read, “Thank Evans For Little Goals”.

    Now, wasn’t that interesting?

  14. Scott , Mc Millan , Millar , Brand and that wee barst …………….. Wilson.

I was unlucky enough to be going to the games as a nipper, when this Hun team were in full flow.Backed up by Baxter, they were the best Hun team I personally ever watched.Add Henderson and you can see why they gubbed us so regularly. In saying that, they had a dirty pair of animals in Shearer and Davis in defence.Animals of the highest order. My auld Da used to hate Shearer with a vengeance, really hated him,but had the misfortune, when he was playing to be a dead ringer for him.Went crazy when so many people would comment on this.

Thank God for 1965 when it all changed.

  15. If my memory serves me well,I think the Hun player who gave Billy the hardest time was Jim Forrest.Later went onto Aberdeen.

Angel Gabriel, my friend, that is just a brilliant post with great news re the mobility scooter and equally great tales of Archie.

As you know, my mother has suffered from the same ailment as your other half for over 30 years and the inability to be mobile is what has affected her most, taking away her independence and spontaneity. The condition is also one which hugely affects the lifestyle and energy of spouses, children, friends and relatives simply because of the amount of care and assistance needed. So the mobility scooter is a great idea. Really pleased about that.

    Turkey hoy,

Yes, Forrest was the one that Billy couldn’t handle.

He was too nippy and played the ball on the ground, negating Billy’s aerial supremacy.

  18. Angel Gabriel,

Wishing your good lady all the very best, hopefully the mobility scooter will be a big boost for her, will it get to Bruce’s Well on the battery life?

  19. There’s always anti climax especially after the season like we’ve just had, but on Monday morning its back to business for the Champions League.

Now that the real transfer window is open we’re in for silly season signings and being linked with dozens of players that will never set foot in Parkhead, and even Celtic don’t know yet whether its plan A , B or C

If Celtic receive an offer we can’t refuse for Moussa we’ll be in urgent need of a striker of some marquee to fill his jersey, if he stays for the difficult third qualifier then goes we’ll still need a gazebo filling man. Otherwise if he just stays, we’re good to go.

Eslewhere in the squad Its also really all about who goes whether we’ll see more new faces, and that excludes moving fringe players on. BR said he wants a midfielder and a centre back and if he is to expose and magnify the gap he must continue his shop at Harrods.

Its recruiting prime quality that created the chasm , most of our players are worldly internationals and I don’t believe we’re out of the Paddy chase either, for the simple reason that SMSM know nothing about Celtic.

    IMHO csc

Cutting our losses with him and getting a million back after a season is a great bit of business. Really pleased to see this actually.

Had a lot of bad things to say about our management for a long time, but hopefully we’re learning slowly but surely that we need to balance the books.

Honours should be reserved for those who have performed exemplary service above and beyond the call of duty or who have committed significant acts of bravery. The process should be clear and transparent and not shrouded in secrecy.

The current honours system has been corrupted to the point of being worthless, clearly the system is used to award political allies and donors and to confer rank on establishment figures and the ‘great and good’. It is also used as a PR opportunity by governments wanting to promote their populist credentials by awarding honours to celebrities. It is an unscrupulous system of patronage and PR.

There should be a wholly new honours system, couched in language and symbolism that reflects our nation’s modern democratic values and culture. The new honours system would have no references to empire, royalty or monarchy. We fully support the need to continue to honour our armed forces by awarding medals for bravery and sacrifice and that reform of the honours system should include new armed forces medals that have no royal associations.

While we accept that many people deserve public recognition through an honours system we believe the current practice of handing out thousands of gongs to undeserving recipients (often of a higher rank than the more deserving) cheapens any award. We would encourage all nominees to publicly reject any such honour until such time as they are appropriately titled and properly reserved for legitimate purposes.
