Nomme Kalju on remarkable run of tight games

121

Nomme Kalju are 20 games into the Estonian league campaign, which they were in contention to retain until recently.  Their unexpected win in Macedonia in the last round of Champions League qualification was the only victory in their last five outings, a run of results which sees them sitting 12 points off the pace domestically.

One of the remarkable aspects of their results is their inability to win or lose games convincingly.  In the last three months, 18 or their 19 games have been settled by a single goal, or drawn.  Their three cup games in that period all went to extra time.

The overwhelming takeaway from reading their form is that this team are involved in tight battles for 90 minutes in virtually every game.  Even the last game they lost by more than a single goal, a 0-3 defeat, was level on 81 minutes.

I expect Celtic to get the better of proceedings tonight, but we need to finish the game strongly.  Nomme will be fitter than we are and used to playing to the final whistle.

  2. I don’t know anything about Nomme but am quite familiar with Estonia. They will be very fit, as a nation there is a strong emphasis in sport both in and out of school, many excellent facilities exist. Basketball is very popular. So we can expect a tall, strong and fit team, that might explain the tight games going to the final minutes. No push overs, we should be ahead on skills and tactics but getting ahead early could be the key.

I wouldnt be reading too much into the fact they are involved in a lot of tight games recently btw. Most of their games are against Estonian teams.

In 20 domestiic games they’ve bagged only 34 goals. Did I mention their domestic league is Estonia?

I get that bloggers need to blog but lets be honest here, on a bad day if we can’t rattle this team for (being generous) at least 3 we may as well forget it.

Watching my tally team Inter, take it to Juve in the ICC. Good fighting spirit from Conte’s Inter.

The big 67.5mill quid signing – De Ligt – just o.g.’d on his debut. Kris Ajer looks every bit his equal or better.

    Embdy got our line-up yet?

Mon the Tic – intae they Estonians. HH

  6. No matter how it is hyped, this team are nowhere near our class. We would need to be really poor, and they to be at their best. Can happen, but I dont think so.

As you said in sport anything can happen

I agree, we are between 1/20 and 1/33 with the bookies.

That’s the kind of odds they give, when we play lower league teams, at home in the cup.

Yes, shocks can and do happen but if we play to the normal standard, I would be expecting a victory by at least 2.

I can’t imagine Jock Stein expecting us to have to finish the game strongly against at home against a team with a European co-efficient of 3.5 and a stadium which holds 650 spectators.

Rather, I think he would have ordered Blitzkrieg in the first half.

  11. The Estonians ARE a team we should be beating but the multi-goal wins don’t always come at home, even at this stage of the qualifiers.

We played well to beat Sarajevo 3:1 and we won 3:0 and 3:1 in qualifiers last year. We took 4 and 5 off Linfield and Astana but we drew 0:0 with Rosenborg and had to win it in Norway.

Before that, we beat Red Imps by 3:0 and Astana by only 2:1.

I would be quite content with 2:0 or 3:1; the job has to be done over 2 legs.

We are capable of taking 5 off them but, if they are defensive, 2 or 3 may be enough.

But that’s your expectation management for you! It only works one way, it seems.

  13. (3) Celtic FC do not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players they ‘finally complete’ deals. The hugely dull nature of this event should be emphasised at all times by using at least one of the following terms – ‘protracted’ ‘long-running’ ‘drawn out affair’ and ‘dithering’

We play in the Scottish league.

The team that finished 3rd last season have just lost to a Welsh team.

And lest you forget, a team playing out of Ibrox lost to the 4th best team in Luxembourg.

Is our league stronger than their league?

You ignored the bit where I said they only scored 34 goals in 20 games in the Estonian league.

    They are 4th in Estonia.

Kilmarnock losing to a Welsh team is irrelevant – we are not Kilmarnock.

Yes we play in Scotland, even we are ranked way higher than the Estonian league, believe it or not.

Shocks happen, they are the exception rather than the rule.

Hence why we havent beaten Barcelona since 2012, sadly.

“Hatem Abd Elhamed (Arabic: حاتم عبد الحميد‎, Hebrew: חאתם עבד אלחמד‎; born 18 March 1991) is an Arab-Israeli professional association footballer who plays for Celtic FC as a defender. He was quoted saying ‘Stevie Gerrard has a heed like a breezeblock’ during his first interview as a Celtic player”.
