Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

  3. Good luck to Hooper and Wanyama, Hooper will get goals, and Wanyama will get lots of yellow cards, so we move on to the new season and looking forward to it lets see what it brings, hopefully not more lurking Huns kidding on they are Tims and constant moaning about PL and the board (honestly they do make it so obvious) anyway good luck Celtic club & fans on our new season Hail-Hail.

  4. Morning all.

Well, Gary has left the building. As he was exiting through the revolving door, I don’t expect he bumped into his replacement.

On the subject of the new home and away kits – I don’t particularly like them. Messing with the hoops – sacrilege imo. Call me a traditionalist.

Why cant the board instruct Nike to come up with a kit that the majority of Celtic fans would like. I have fond memories of the all-green strip of the late 60s/early 70s – time to bring it back imo.

I saw this in an article headed (yawn) “Is Gary Hooper good enough for the EPL?”. Written by a Norwich fan

“The standard of quality in the SPL has always been questioned by fans of English clubs, and without the riches of a multi-million TV deal, it is not surprising to see why. This doesn’t mean the league excludes top players; for every couple of Kris Boyds, you get a Henrik Larrson or Mikel Arteta.”

Guy is unimpressed by SPL top goalscorer ever! Can’t spell Larsson though and seems to like guys who wear Alice bands when they play football .

At least he recognises the crucial factor of TV money. Most of them won’t admit that

Nothing new in the attitude, but there are a few more than Larsson and Arteta to reference.

  12. Will Gary Hooper do a Frank McAvennie in the EPL next season?

In Frankiebhoy’s first season with West Ham in 1985/86 he scored 26 league goals, a total bettered only by Gary Lineker who scored 30 for Everton.

    Maybe not.

Just because the reliable impartial media bid tryin to tout more of our players for the off doesn’t mean they are away. In fact id wager the ones u mention Will still be here come Sept.

Once again can we not wait to have a go at club until things actually happen other than just read something in press an jump off the deep end?

  20. Murdochbhoy, yermanfromMK on

    Good morning CQNers,

There will be many demands made on the money generated from the sale of Wanyama & Hooper but one area I’d like to see some directed to is our PR dept / Press Office.

From a little research I carried out it appears the main trust of these departments is the charitable and community aspects of the club. With a hostile Scottish media and Jack Irvine’s Media House actively pursuing a campaign to undermine some clubs its about time the board set aside resources to beef up these departments.

The speed with which the unfounded story of Celtic supporters signing chants about Lee Rigby went viral in England must have come to a shock to Desmond and Lawwell.

Perhaps this particular story and the possible repercussions in England will motivate the Celtic board to actually take some action.

  21. Murdoch..,

Story’s like that only make the celtic supporters targets of assault and discrimination why would the board start caring about that ?

That victimisation is part of the market strategy obviously or they’d have brought the SFA to book long ago

  22. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Macjay, what’s regrettable is that you’ve taken the gutter press fantasised pish as gospel over the word of many of the supporters on here who were in attendance at Brentford. I wasn’t there, but since the game I’ve spoken to some who were and the reality doesn’t match the lies that were written in the press.

You link to a piece that references the Udinese game and the fine imposed that night. I was at that game and I’m still to understand why we were fined and more importantly why the club accepted the fine? Was it the Paddy McCourt chants? If it was my disgust is directed at the club for their meek and cowardly acceptance of this sanction.

Maybe you should take the word of people who were in attendance at games over that of the hun propaganda machine. You’ll be telling me next how disgusted you are that the Celtic support sung about Lee Rigby. FFS, wisen up.

And Hail Hail to you too Bruv

  23. Re Celtic TV online, I have had it since its inception. It has gone from mediocre to good to mediocre but is now improving season by season, very little buffering these days. It is actually quite a good product now and when you compare it to the so called professionals like BBC and STV, who have been doing it for years, then I think it’s worth a punt for those fans outside Ireland and the UK.

They have also sorted out the problem with not being able to play it on Apple products, as they are using QuickTime. I can now play it on my IPad and also via an Apple TV box, cost about £80, and an HDMI cable onto my flat screen telly using the Airplay function. OK it’s not high definition yet but that will come.

cadizzy, Blantyrekev’s draw system is more complex than the unravelling and mathematical modelling of the human genome.

He’s receiving an honorary doctorate from MIT later in the year for coming up with that system and is shortlisted for this year’s “sporting Advancement” award by the R&A.

I don’t for one minute believe the portrayal of victimisation is a deliberate board strategy.

Unfortunately the only pronouncements coming from the board seem to be admonishments for misbehaving supporters and this is skewing the picture. I’m hopeful the newly appointed Liaison Officer will help the board and supporters narrow the existing gulf.

As for the SFA, well, the club was hamstrung somewhat with the HMRC and Nimmo Smith but this is a long game, its not over yet.

Again I’ve got to go but, as always, may God bless all Celtic supporters.
