Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

Wee dig the other day at Carlos Tevez for joining them.

What a gamble, selling off the family silver amid CL qualification, are Celtic brassing it out, with no desire to make the CL, because it’s certainly too late to bring in a proven goalscorer.

Did they all sit down a while ago and decide £100 off season tickets, a family stand, and free wi-fi would do the trick, with a year out of the CL both Wanyama and Hooper sold, and all the money banked?

Virgil Van Dijk and Amido Balde, included I think they’ve opted for a half hearted attempt on

    Europe.

  13. Just a wee word about the timing of selling Wanyama and Hooper. Some have said that any sale should have been done after the qualifiers as neither Southampton or Norwich are playing in Europe and it wouldn’t have mattered to them.

All well and and good until you consider that these clubs have preseasons, these clubs have transfer targets and are eager to get business done early. No way Celtic could have said to either club, hold off and come back in 4 weeks. They wouldn’t have stood for it and in all probability moved on to more targets, leaving Celtic with two very unhappy footballers and millions lost…

  14. Bourne. Come on in :) I have a beer for you. Welcome to the land of PL bonus 1st and to H@ll with putting bums on seats and improving the team

  16. SOT, last question. Do you have the Dave Godin deep soul series? I guess you do. The first one just melts my heart.

  17. bournesouprecipe,

We have a habit of not building from a position of strength.

Victor and Gary have to be replaced, even if it goes a bit out of budget. I’m not too spooked by the fact Malmo done up Hibs like a Kipper, Hibs, unfortunately, are a poor team. We will take care of the Borg, because we are Free spirited.

The 3rd round might be tricky unless we augment our squad with serious quality. I remember Victor playing against Inter, total Class, and it doesn’t take long to stamp your authority, when you know you are destined for the Top.

Five weeks to the window slams shut. We have not yet been “snubbed”.

Vic and Hoops were always going this summer. Best of luck to them though I would’ve loved to get another year out of Vic.

Maybe Lenny does have targets, maybe it’s Virgil, Amido and big Tom Rogic.

A lot of horse trading to bed done yet, it’s no even August yet!

There have been decisions made, and outwith the control of NFL.

I think he’s been left short, and he knows it, even if we beat Elfsborg the ‘danger tie’ is still to come, if Anthony Stokes (*no disrespect*) is leading the line, then they knew exactly what they were doing, about qualification.

It’s not as if they didn’t know they were banking 17million for VW and GH, – they did.

Hooper was replaced before he went (Balde)

  22. Stunning hypocrisy.

Within a few minutes, 2 major stories exposing just how hypocritical official bodies can be.

First, on-line I read the story of police investigating Charlotte for posting documents exposing the widespread and rampant corruption which is Scottish society (including Scottish football). Not a word about an investigation into the corruption exposed by Charlotte. Only the fact that Charlotte did not have authorisation to publish said documents.

Interesting to note however, there is no denial of the authenticity of the documents. Indeed, the police investigation confirms their authenticity.

Then, moments later, on the news here in Oz, there is a story about leading doctors in the AMA calling for smacking children to be made illegal. This from the same august body which is responsible for many 1000s of abortions each year.

Apparently it is OK to rip an unborn baby to shreds, just don’t smack it afterwards.

I’m in no way saying we shouldn’t be speculating to accumulate but I’d be astounded if £17m has just appeared in the bank account.

After last Season, not having CL games would be a monumental let down.

Even Europa League would unlikely sustain the appetite.

We are a confident team now IMO, a year older, wiser, hopefully and absolutely Hell Bent on getting to the CL group stages proper. Our ages are fan dabi dozi, our hinderances are there for everyone to see, Celtic, well they hypnotize me.
