Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

It is easy to be a snartass, fact is we are in deep s1. Much as I used to love the GB they have let me down so I wish they would shove their flares up their own a^^ and I would rather Celtic Park return to a silent stadium it once was (and I did wonder in awe at the display pre-Barca – manufique) than pay the penalty of how ashamed I feel at the moment. Oh well, each to their own.

Been like that for a couple of days. Mucho mineshafting going on.

Uncertainty does that – makes irrational accusers out of normally sane posters and having the usual suspects poking about with their snide witticisms exacerbates the situation.

Amid it all the club bundles on in a no-win situation; damned for selling, damned for not playing players who DID NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR CELTIC ANY MORE.

Like it or not, that was the truth. We’d have gotten nothing out of them in any crunch CL qualifier – their souls were elsewhere and their minds would have bene looking after the bodies that earn their fortunes.

We need to field a team that at least wants to wear the jersey in the group stages.

People need to comprehend that and stop bleating like spoiled weans.

FFM, geez another conspiracy theory. This banger wan instigated by saint john oneil the patron saint of the celtic support is wearing a wee bit thin.

Joking aside, I was right underneath the banner behind the goal at the cup final with my son when some fickwutted young celtic idiot thought it was a good idea to let off a smoke bomb. People were panicking and it wasn’t pleasant. I told my boy to get right done on the ground and keep calm. There were many people choking because of one stupid boy’s prank. (not to mention the next thick tim who threw a smoke bomb onto the running track), FFS it was an orange one too!!! Morons a re morons regardless of the colors they wear.

Celtic need to do more to catch these idiots before they hurt someone or worse.

I do not automatically blame the GB as I’m well aware of the demographic of section 111 but if they want to continue to exist they should exert some lateral / baseball bat movement and bounce these neds out of their section.

  17. Awe Naw,

Not being sarcastic at all. Today’s a painful read on CQN – an increase in agitators attacking the GB. I don’t understand where your confusions coming from.

If you want me to clarify my own stance on the situation with the GB, they’re still under attack. Bangers are a no-no for me. I’d ban all feckin fireworks from existence actually, I hate them. I’d be surprised if the GB saw them as an important part of what they bring.

Interesting that on page 5 someone complained about one being let off at CP in front of kids and the culprit then disappearing from the section 10 mins later.

    Murky stuff going on.

It’s not the first time you’ve quizzed me. Happy to exchange email addresses. Or if it’s just a case that my points aren’t clear then mea culpa, I’ve drank away a lot of brain cells in the last couple of years.

My main point is today’s a depressing read on CQN and it’s been building up to it since last week, peaking today (though I’m still on page 8).

To be fair to P67, he actually predicted this division about 2 yrs ago – although the full story behind it isn’t clear.

Happy to discuss further with you if you’re sticking around a bit tonight.

For confirmation of agitation today, see below. Note reference to “victims”. Note “They do indeed believe themselves to be superior supporters”:

I mean those who wish to sing offensive songs and just ignore safety advice. They would appear to revel in their belief that they are ‘victims’. Time to get tough.”

Ehhhhhhhh they don’t like Nike, child slavery or some thing, a tell you they are not fit for purpose bin the lot of them, ehhhhhh Celtic board had a war munger on it ( John Reid) a mean Ffs, that’s what we are up against, left wing extremists they need a platform and use us, if you are Round here at 2 am some morning you get them, they call them selves moon howlers, I call them stoners,

FFM, BobM, I’m actually thinking there’s more rockets on during the day than during the dark hours……………………Saint John O Neil excepted, he’ walks on water and spouts fire oot his arse and other orifices in defence of Celtic without actually being there to see the them.

I want saint John O to be my next MP.

  20. gherrybhoy57 on

I am no finance expert, but I have been doing some rough calculations in the light of the arguments about who we should buy etc.

The golden rule is that the club should not spend more than 50% of its turnover on wages. I don’t know if that includes non playing staff, and other employers’ costs such as NI contributions etc. The club has said that it budgets for NOT qualifying for CL Group Stage.

So, say the T/O is £50m per year; that means we can pay a total of £25m in wages. That’s an average of £16.5k per player per week. That is a fraction of the wages paid by English Championship sides, never mind the EPL. We want to sign players on decent length contracts in order that we can realise any sell on value if they leave. That must be budgeted for. We can only finance purchases out of the transfer fees from sales.

Last year was a bonanza for the club. Even if we did make a couple of “marquee” signings, there is no guarantee that we would qualify for the CL. Look how Bate, with a co-efficient higher than Celtic’s, were KO’d this week, leaving them with no Euro income this season.

We all know of a team that gambled on reaching the CL and look at them now. Our board would be irresponsible if it took such a gamble.

I think there is some cash for NFL to invest in 1 or 2 players in this window and, based on his signings since he took office, I trust his judgement.

Unearthing a good striker is the hardest job for any manager and we must be patient. MON was soooo lucky that KoK was already here when he arrived AND he was given the funds to buy BBJ and Sutty. Let’s hope NFL can find another as good as Hoops, if not better. But there’s no guarantee. HH

Fireworks of any types I hate with a vengeance. The old dear still relates the tale of coming out the local shop to catch a ned chucking a banger in my pram which she managed to catch before it went off. You know how handsome I am so you’ll see how important it was she preserved my physical beauty from malicious damage !

Anyone bring a banger to a football ground needs a heavy bit of self-policing from fellow supporters. But I say to you, the incident you’re talking about didn’t come from the GB section at CP, it came from a random. Smoke bombs are an ugly waste of time too.

The GB started with two important objectives in my mind – enthuse support at the game, and represent a political stance which I believe equates to the majority of the support. Peace and equality.

Why is it that since the rozzers were found out through their own meeja spokesperson to be targeting them due to their “marxist” opinions, and since there’s been a serious failure to jail them despite changing the law to do so, that now we’re discussing fireworks and blaming them for it.

It stinks, amigo. Too many here on CQN today were scarily quick to jump on the bandwagon and condemn them. Thankfully it was balanced by a lot of sensible comments as well from good posters who keep their powder dry for days like this. Robert Tressel take a bow !
