Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage. They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player. Cash wise, they did all right.
They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool. By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m. Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.
Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).
Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool. By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.
In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory. We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.
On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.
Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services. In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand. City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.
One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.
Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

Robbie Keane’s wife didnae, she couldnae wait tae get him oan a plane tae L.A.!!!
Bet you didnt know that before tonight the worst ever aggregate defeat suffered by a Scottish club in Europe was the Huns’ 12-4 humping by the soon-to-be-humped-themselves Eintracht Frankfurt?
Strange how that little stat has lain buried for so long..

I think hes got dodgy knees cos hes always going for medicals.

I think it is my democratic right to be able to type pish on cqn and I do it anytime the wife says it is ok.
Total disgrace from Hibs tonight, a complete embarrassment.
That’s a real season-killer of a result. Fenlon for the chop before the season even starts?
But well done St Johnstone, tremendous couple of results. Not sure if they’ll get past Minsk but sincerely hope they do.

Ha.
I should have put PFleith.
The club have let us down again. Both Vic and Hoops should have been sold earlier, especially the latter. Our pre-season for the CL qualifiers should have included the required new striker, one capable of replacing Hooper. Big Balde did well on Tuesday but being on the bench would suggest he is not ready yet.
Disappointed and hope Celtics gamble pays off.
GGH
If mrs ggh catches you… will you get a rocket ;)
I see the Celtic board are getting it in the neck again from the usual suspects, doing the MSM’s job for them.
Celtic have been charged by UEFA over fireworks at the game on Tuesday. Celtic responded by issuing a warning to supporters in Section 111. I have read the statement. It mentions the Green Brigade only twice and in both instances in an entirely positive way. It is clear that the club statement is warning “supporters in Section 111”.
Yet according to canamalar and neganon, the board are to be vilified for criticising the Green Brigade.
As far as I can see, only the likes of the Daily Record and other Scottish rags are reporting that Celtic have warned the Green Brigade.
Shame to see these guys doing the Record’s job for them on CQN. Sadly, it is all so predictable.
With friends like these . . .
A cheap newspaper is this evening suggesting we will get Doyle. Good. He will do well up here. If true of course…
Rock on Ross hall,
You’ll never fall to sevco’s greedy hands
The problem Celtic have to intice players to Scotland,is not improved by the Hibernian result tonight. We are now being classed as a third rate football nation. This will please the SFA,they will now push for Sevco to take the mantle of the leading club in Shitland.
The boy Jinky
nae chance of a banger anyway.
Fireworks out after all these years :)
BIG-CUP-WINNERS –
Surely Balde being on the bench on Tuesday was just part of getting him ready. Who is to say he won’t be ready for next Wednesday?
Celtic bought Balde, a striker, long before selling Hooper. Your argument doesn’t add up..
fanadpatriot 22:20 on 25 July, 2013
Sevco are going nowhere. And the SFA can do nothing about it.
do away goals count double in the europa linfield beat 2-1 (2-2)at home after ET or is it pens
Good effort from Linfield – they took it to extra-time this season before going out.
We are putting a call out to all you Celtic fans with a talent for graphic Design. If that’s you then you can be part of Celtic Fan history by designing the book cover for The Celtic Anthology. As with the stories and poems you don’t have to be a professional designer just Celtic fans who are pretty handy with graphic design software.
Here is the remit:
1. The front of the book should have main heading of Celtic Anthology, and sub-heading of A Collection of Stories, Poems & Memories.
2. The back of the book contain an area of around 30% for extracts or comments
3. The file format can be PNG, PSD or SVG.
4. The final cover size has not been fixed yet but we suggest you work to 6″ (153mm) x 9″ (228mm)
5. The deadline for your submission is 31st of August.
Please submit as many drafts as you like to celticanthology@gmail.com
Hail, Hail
The Anthology Team

No chance Balde will start on Wednesday …a big raw laddie is as kind as I’ve heard said of him
IMO he will need time to settle …I’m not expecting him to be first choice this season …
I saw comments earlier about Hibs poor showing in Europe tonight and assumed it was because they had lost both home and away.
Just noticed the score. My God what a humiliation.
Fenlon’s jacket must be hanging by a thread.
Linfield 1 Gault 99′ .
FC Xanthi 2 Marcelinho 27′, 105′ .
(agg 2 – 2)
.
Skoda Xanthi win on away goals rule
Steinreignedsupreme
I ,like you would like to believe that, but the system works, unfortunately
We can make a signing for the Elfsborg games up to 24 hrs before the 1st leg.
@bobbypetta
Im playing in Stiliyan’s match as well on 8th sept :)
Morrissey : have you plenty of material or still gathering stuff?
PFayr –
You could be right, but who is to say any other striker bought in the last few weeks would have been a starter next week? Even Larsson took a few games to bed in.
As someone else posted yesterday, we are victims of timing. These games come far too early for us to bring in players who are established at other clubs.
tom mclaughlin
Balde was a late sub, he did well. Celtic would have started him before Tony Stokes if he was ready. The tie was won in Belfast after all. The pecking order last season was Hooper then Stokes, agreed? Then why was big Balde benched, when Tony started ?
fanadpatriot 22:27 on 25 July, 2013
The chance passed last summer.
And with Longmuir removed from his position at the now defunct SFL – any remote hopes Sevco had have now completely gone.
Skoda xanthi sounds like a private hire taxi.
As it turns out, it’s taxi for linfield.
Morrisey..,
Yer right, the club never blamed them that was down to “good” Celtic supporters on this blog, the club named them as negotiators for the section, which implies responsibility for the section.
SRS,
I know you don’t alway take everything the board say as gospel but you seem to think the GB should take control of security for the section why ?
I was just reading their site again and they are saying at the end of the games there are loads of empty buckie bottles littering the back rows of the section, so while the GB are getting searched the rest appear to bring in anything they want, and immediately anything goes awry the peewee mob on here are getting the gallows ready for the GB. And people who should know better are telling us ifs the GBs fault because should be vigil antis in their own section, put themselves in harms way (cause that’s what your doing when you challenge a buckie boy). You can’t have it both ways, you need to cooperate with those who are harassing you if you want to stop people labelling you hooligans. There’s something just no right about your argument.
Tom
There was no need to sell Hooper this week
He’s our best striker …he could have been sold after Wednesdays game …
We seem to be rushing our players out and bring snail like in bringing in replacements
VW was sold weeks ago…no replacement
Now Hooper …..
Selling our best players before the CL qualifiers is madness…damn madness when replacements aren’t brought in immediately
Steinreignedsupreme
Is that why The Beast made an appearance yesterday.stick it up you TIMMY.
Good night all
What will be will be no point stressing over it :))

And winning these ties, gaining sharpness, should give us an advantage if we face a strong club who are early in their pre-season ?

Balde had a 20 min cameo against a knackered part time out fit …perspective ….he did alright ..but
Of greater concern was Stokes ,…he was awful ..
