Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage. They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player. Cash wise, they did all right.
They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool. By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m. Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.
Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).
Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool. By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.
In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory. We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.
On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.
Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services. In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand. City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.
One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.
Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

Bada, not yet – he is waiting for Keane to fly in from LA before they get Dermot’s jet up together!!!!!!
Now Hooper has gone, expect at least 4 signings. 2 strikers, left mid and replacement for victor
I think the guys with the bangers should get toad in the hole.

Possibly his last goal against a team called ‘rangers’, remember them? What a finish. 3-0. He actually scored a few great ones against them. His finish in the away leg in Moscow was great, took it so quick.
Yes he’ll be missed, we can’t deny that. Best striker since Henrik.
Not at all Morrissey the 23rd, I had penned my offering before I read yours. I am not joking when I say your’s was one of the few posts that I actually enjoyed.
Badabing!

Squabbles in the family can be depressing.
As long as they are of short duration.
Surprised apart from one person there has been no mention of the firework set off at St Johnstone’s ground tonight. No harm to them but it will be interesting to see the reaction from msm.

That was my next best but the fact that I had just come from work and was sitting in a pub full of City types that night(we kicked off at 5 or 530)who were waiting for Chelsea etc to play made it my favourite
Haven’t seen blue flares on a pitch since a 1970s pitch invasion.

Jamie mackie has asked Qpr for a transfer. Any chance we are interested in taking him to CP?
I watched Jamie for a couple of years at Plymouth Argyle. A whole-hearted player who always gave it everything, even in the absolutely shocking team that Plymouth had become by then. He was often the only player who looked vaguely as if he gave a toss when all around him had abandoned ship. One particular away game at Charlton springs to mind when he was still trying when all around him were into damage limitation.
I was very pleased when he got a move to QPR and have followed his career since. Was unaware of his Scottish qualifications (other then the name) prior to his capping.
May God bless him and I wish him further success.
But Celtic class? Never in a million years! Respect for your achievements Jamie but please no……
Though for the politically correct tendency, I will always support any Celtic player!

Can’t really be bothered with any issue’s with the green brigade. I find it so boring. I would rather concentrate on events on the park. Is that opinion allowed? Is it ok to be irritated by 3 drumbeat every second when you are trying to concentrate on the match?
Well done Saint John’s town of Perth
Now where is that John who can’t spell his own surname ….hehehehe

Someone just posted a newspaper article about feynoord fans… with a flare clearly burning in them. Sure they will feel uefa clamping down on them too
Was 180 miles of history destroyed wae that bus fire??
Thank goodness, there you go, I find the green brigade a slight irritation- but I can live with it and my opinion is respected. No why can’t the authorities do the same – or is that too much common sense?
WeefratheTim –
Thanks my friend in Celtic.
Just waiting for the letter from the hospital with a date for the surgery. I have also been invited to see a heart specialist in a week or two which is apparently normal for someone going in for major surgery who has had a heart attack in the past.
I am in good spirits and actually looking forward to the surgery in the sense that it is the way forward and a means of defeating this disease.
Glad to say I have a “bring it on” attitude.
Hail Hail

The only reason I post on the CQN blog is to bring a level of respect and common sense that would otherwise be missing. ;-)
Lest we forget.
Celtic allowed the G B into C P and spend £10000 to up the anti before the Barca game and it worked.
The Untouchables…………..absolute drivel
Connery………the sally mcmoist of acting……………………..switched off.

Away from the GB debate and transfers, it is great that we have posters on here who have gone along to support other Scottish clubs in Europe. The spirit of solidarity of the summer of 2012 is still alive.
Like or No like it…
Even if Celtic Bring in.
Two Hotshot.. well.. Hotshots.. Tonight…
Fired up, Capable and Eager Strikers.
Firstly,We hiv left it far too late , in order tae Allow these.. Ephemeral? Fellows a reasonable chance tae “Bed in” , afore oor Next important Confronto. in the Euro League Prelims, and that wid be.. Us vs The Swedes.

Wull,We Suffer ,Muchly… from the Loss of Two of oor Maist influential Players. in the Upcoming Games Agin the Swedes?
Well.. Folks, those Questions wull hiv tae remain Unanswered.. as they infringe oan the realm where… Abstruse and Recondite subject matters, Do Dwell.

Well..Normally.. Alyss Kin..
But, she his Jist informed me.. that She His ran? run?. .. used up all her supply… of

The team here at the ‘Celtic Anthology’ would like to thank the Celtic family very much for every single submission received for the project. We are delighted and overwhelmed with the response.
A wide range of subjects have been covered in stories, poems and memories. There are brilliant observations covering past and present tales. Some will make you laugh, some will make you weep, but every one will stir a feeling of pride in being part of Celtic.
The submission deadline was set at July 1st 2013 but late submissions may still make it to the next round. And even if they don’t, there’s a real possibility next year could see a Celtic Anthology 2, so get writing and keep sending us pieces.
The Anthology is shaping up into a tremendous insight into the Celtic family and for that we thank you all so very very much.
Sincerely, Anthology team.

Excellebt Kojo. I never used to read your posts because they hurt my eyes. However I am on holiday so why not devote more time to CQN and read extra.
