Nordsjaelland, stalking-horse Harry, Hooper

1126

Just two years after winning their first trophy, FC Nordsjælland from Denmark qualified for last season’s Champions League group stage.  They drew one and lost five of their games and were on the receiving end of one of the Champions League’s worst ever piece of sporting behaviour, by a Shakhtar Donetsk player.  Cash wise, they did all right.

They received €8.6m for reaching the group stage and €500k performance bonus but they also received 11.3m euro from the market pool.  By comparison, Benfica received €2.3m, while Porto and Anderlecht each received 3.2m.  Nordsjælland’s opponents in next week’s third qualifying round, Zenit, received €6m from the market pool, while Celtic received €8m.

Celtic, Nordsjælland and Ajax (€9.8m) benefited from being their country’s only participate in the group stage, and from having television deals which are comparatively better than their east European competitors (Bate Borisov earned €290k).

Juventus and Milan, being Italy’s only two representatives, cleaned up, earning €44.8m and €36.2m respectively from the market pool.  By comparison, Arsenal, one of four from England, earned a more modest €15.8m.

In short, the lesson is, if you come from an small west-European league and want to earn money from the Champions League, it’s far better to be the only competitor from your territory.  We shouldn’t forget this among all the complaints about having to play three qualifying rounds due to the lack of success in Europe by other Scottish clubs.

On the subject of which, good luck to St Johnstone tonight.

Gary Hooper wanted to go to Norwich City in January but the club, knowing his desire to leave Glasgow, offered a little over £2m for his services.  In stepped the unintended stalking-horse, QPR boss, Harry Redknapp, who met Celtic’s valuation and forced Norwich City’s hand.  City have returned to the table with an acceptable bid.

One rash club can cause havoc in the transfer market, even when they don’t buy a player.

Training for 1254125 10k is now underway. See yesterday’s article for sign-up details.

Yes but not a lot of time.

Users and followers of online Celtic Fans Media will be well aware of the rich and diverse body of writers, commentators and Poets we have in our support. The amazing fact is that 98% of these people are not professional writers they are just ordinary Celtic supporters who use social media to express their feelings and passion for our club.

As we all know the founding of the club is firmly anchored in charity and the well being those less fortunate. With this in mind and to coincide with our Clubs 125 year celebration a group of Celtic fans have embarked on creating The Celtic Anthology.

    Q. What is the Celtic Anthology Project ?

    A. The Anthology project as a means to raise money for our club’s 1254125 charity challenge for each fan to raise £125 for charity http://www.celticfc.net/1254125 . We thought it would be a great idea to do something that not only raised a significant amount of money but also to add to the rich tapestry of Celtic FC.

Not everyone can climb Ben Nevis, Cycle 125 miles or run a marathon but everyone does have a story to tell. Therefore we are inviting Celtic Supporters young and old, male and female to contribute a story or poem about their experience of living with Celtic in their lives. This could take any form. It could be your favourite match, favourite memory, a piece of fiction, a family story, a trip to a game at home or abroad etc. Basically anything you feel you would like to put down in writing or in a poem and share with the world.

We hope to gather enough stories and poems to fill a decent size book which will then be published with all profits going to the 1254125 charity.

If you would like to contribute or wish any more information please contact us via our Contact form or email celticanthology@gmail.com.

We believe this is a fantastic chance to help the charity and leave something for future generations of Celtic supporters to read.

You can follow us on Twitter: @CelticAnthology or on Facebook: Celtic Anthology

    Thank you for visiting.

“Is that why The Beast made an appearance yesterday.stick it up you TIMMY.”

John Collins also made an appearance. Souness being at the launch for four leagues makes no difference to anything.

If Sevco are going to make it to the top flight they will have to do it the same way as every other club.

  4. BIG-CUP-WINNERS –

Like I said. Maybe he wasn’t quite ready. He was in a new club in a new country. There was no need for him to start on Tuesday because Hooper was in the squad. Bringing him on as a late sub is surely part of the process.

Terrific result for the Saints tonight! As for Hibs, well without Griffith last season they would not have been near qualifying for Europe, even as runners-up. Last decent coach in Edinburgh was Xabi Laslo, and he didn’t last long at Hearts.

  6. Just watched BBC’s promotion for the new football season after the news but why were MOTHERWELL and the DEID CLUB highlighted but no mention of Aberdeen’s achievements.

  7. twists n turns on

Jamie mackie has asked Qpr for a transfer. Any chance we are interested in taking him to CP?

  8. Anybody thinking charlottes being investigated by the polis because jack demands to know who these people are

  9. Just back from the Hibs game. So sad. Gotta feel for their suffering support. My first European match saw Celtic beat Finnish opposition 9-0 and tonight it has come full circle seeing a Scottish team lose 7-0. A Scottish team which has competed with Liverpool Leeds and even reached a semi final in the European cup. So sad.

  10. compared to last season our teams out with celtic have actually done better. if I remember correctly every team out with celtic got pumped last season and none progressed beyond their entry round. st. Johnston have managed to win and draw putting a higher rated team out. we do need other Scottish teams to preform well so we have to wish them well as it helps us in the long run. hibs are out, but lets not forget we have not always covered ourselves in glory.

    Scottish football gets a bum deal as a result of;

poor t.v deals while we (Scottish viewers) subsidise the EPL.

a small top league made boring cause teams want to preserve their premier league status (too few relegation places and play-offs, no euro play-offs) why not have a 14 team top flight? even split, add another relegation and play-off spots etc… little competition for title. top and bottom of league done by December most season

unfair distribution of income, though there appears to have been some improvement to this.

    overpricing of match tickets

imho Scottish football would be a far better product if the people who ran it, done so in a manner that reflected the need for fair competition, co-dependency of all teams and took into consideration that football fans go to games because of the unpredictable nature of the games the potential success and failures, the ups and the downs i.e. nothing worse than relegation, but winning promotion is a great feeling, relegation play-off are murder, losing is awful, winning them wonderful, same for euro-playoff, its not rocket science.

Think you’re being a bit harsh on Stokes, he was not awful, not great but definitely not awful. He was full of movement and a bit unlucky at times, confidence is what is needed with Anton and once he breaks his duck he’ll be a different player

“I know you don’t alway take everything the board say as gospel but you seem to think the GB should take control of security for the section why?”

No. I’m not saying they should take control – by self-stewarding I mean, if someone is in your chair or your place then you move them on – Buckie bottle or not. Especially, if you are being blamed for stuff you are not doing.

Would you allow someone to just wander into you space?

As I said before, if the issue was monkey-noises or racial abuse the GB would be self-policing … fireworks is no different.

I don’t think this is a case of the board are always wrong and the GB are always right. Common sense on all sides has to be applied.

  19. SRS,

I think you’d be surprised at the common sense being talked on their website, they’ve come to the conclusion the next pyro lit in section 111 will feel their wrath, trick is when your singing and dancing and watching the game you don’t get much time to do the stewards job as well.

Yer right if someone is in my seat I ask them to move but if someone is in someone else’s seat I don’t. It’s no my place to ask them and I doubt there’s much overcrowding in thbs wee part of 111

    canamalar1 @ 22:34

I didn’t write that the GB should police the section. All supporters in general should police and educate each other. As they always have.

Everybody is responsible for themselves. Everybody can also help fellow supporters where we can, how we reasonably can.

I am a big supporter of the GB. I post in a couple of Facebook GB pages. I was in the police kettle on Gallowgate supporting them. I also went to the George square protest against ‘disproportionate’ Green Brigade policing. I have had a series of e-mails between myself and Ronnie Hawthorn, The head of Operations at Celtic park, regarding the lack of support given to their own fans. I’ve had police Sargents in my house for HOURS regarding complaints I have made about their behaviour to this group of supporters and I’ve spoke to The Chief of police about ‘Gallowgate’ on a few occasions about the same issue. I myself have suffered the special attention one gets when they complain about the police by a Sargent in George square while giving support to the Anti-bedroom tax rally in George square. Maybe that was due to me being the proud owner of a GB ‘The Banned Bhoys Stand Together’ T-shirt and the Sargent who demonstrated to me his dislike of the GB was unaware I was in the process of making a complaint about his behaviour the previous week in the Gallowgate. I moved my seat to be near them as I like what they do. They are not perfect but nobody is. They get enough hassle from others without me being highly critical of them.

Like Celtic though. I stand alone. I’m an outsider. I’ll express my views and listen to others, open to their views. I shape my views on my experience and even change them accordingly.

I not arguing. ;) but I may bore you into submission.

Apparently Sourness said that he would have worked for Kennedy for nothing, or at least until he’s paid his EBT loan back.

In other news, Celtic are building a team for the future.

Hibs were caught out because they had to attack, people on here calling them an embarrassment should think first, the result’s the thing. It doesn’t matter if they were beaten 1-0; 10-0 or 20-0, they’re out, Malmo are well into their season. The real result is St Johnstone’s. They did exactly what they had to do, not lose.

That said he is also forgotten in my eyes and I await a suitable replacement as I have done so since King Kenny left all those years ago and others since…..but a quick question – what was your most favourite Hooper goal. Mines was.Spartak last year, in a pub in London just after work all suited with a mix of Celts and others dancing about as we started off on the road to last 16!

Just back from st Johnstone game. Great atmosphere and really exciting ending to the game. Don’t know how their fans felt but even I was nervous watching. 2 fans on the pitch at the end despite warnings over the tannoy and several blue flares lit before the game. Wonder if that will make it into the media.
