Nothing to lose but their loser labels

901

I’ve been to a few non-Celtic games over the years and always found is striking the different reaction mid-table teams have to a defeat compared to how we react.  There is simply not the expectation that every game has to be won.  For most of the last 40-odd years Celtic have been nip-and-tuck with a direct opponent at the top of the league, so a single defeat can have a significant bearing on league title prospects.

Even when we were not involved in a close league race, the desire to win by an astonishing number of points provided an edge, whereas, back in the 90s, the chasm between Celtic and the top was made increasingly unbearable by each passing defeat.

This season is different.  We’ve dropped 10 points in 10 games but substantial evidence exists that the team is making solid progress, a fact not disputed by the support, even as they left Celtic Park on Saturday.  For most, the distress of defeat has tempered.

We’re two points ahead of three teams at the top of the league, with a game in hand, which makes this the most competitive SPL ever.  The gap between second and second last is just six points, St Mirren who sit second bottom, would be level on points with joint-second St Johnstone had they won the game between these two earlier this month.

All this honest competition has resulted in a rise in average attendances for most clubs during “Armageddon”.  It’s too easy to poke fun at the miscalculations of the SPL and SFA chief executives who believed the game needed a fatally flawed giant in the top flight.  Instead, what it needed was genuine competition, which we have, to a degree.

Hibs, Aberdeen and St Johnstone are all two points from the top of the table while Inverness and Killie are only one win below them.  Can you imagine how good a league this would be without the last remaining over-sized behemoth?

The SPL didn’t need Rangers, in fact, it is a better, more competitive league without them.  The same goes for Celtic.  We are not good for the league and do nothing for Aberdeen, United, Hibs or clubs who want nothing but a sporting chance in the game.  Many of these clubs seem to have Stockholm Syndrome; locked into the belief that they need to be with their tormentors.

If I was writing a blog about any of these clubs I’d tell Celtic to go find themselves some fantasy football league and let the rest of the country get back to a proper sporting endeavour.  They have nothing to lose but their loser labels.

  3. I salute the GB who bring such life and colour to our stadium.

Certainly , our manager appreciates the backing they give our team when he dedicated the SPL trophy to them.

They have brought the thunder back to Paradise and must be supported .

    HH to the GB

  4. Minx1888 – Thanks amigo, I will pass on your kind remarks and those of the others on here to the club members.

It was indeed a team effort with everybody doing whatever they could to help raise a few bob for wee Oscar and his family. The Toronto #1 Club are proud to have had the chance to contribute to such a great cause; God Bless the Knox family. Special mention also to the troops who drove south from the Aurora Club. It was a great day of music, food, fun and joy and a few beers etc:)

I had a few Guinness but nothing to touch PFayr’s usual quota:)

  6. Thanks for the info on the car parking at CP guys. Behind the police station I think is safest bet.

On the subject of Seville, I have never watched the game since. We were up against a very good side who ruined the whole event with their timewasting and diving.

Our flight from Seville back to Barcelona was not until 10 oclock the following night, woke up in the costa coffee in the airport with all the spanish commuters standing above us. That as a long long hot day in that airport, our day was saved however when we found out that we were allowed into the business class lounge, all drink was free, two hooped clad piss heads mixing with the spanish business class jet setters.

Would do it all again, 6 planes and all.

  7. palacios, depending upon what direction you are coming from, westmuir st or crail st are good options as is glamis rd between tollcross and london roads.

estorilbhoy, nit getting into the debate

  8. Just saw that cretin Winter on Sky News.

Wife was unaware who he was, showed her the Daily Mail (!) report of his comments after the game last December, she is suitably disgusted.

  9. Phew just spent 2hours with Sarah Lund’s jumpers ah’m pure wore oot!

The new series of The Killing is top drawer stuff, with Miss Lund wearing her usual tidy array of freaky funky jumpers..

Just read the Green Brigade statement and I can honestly say I’m not in the least bit surprised at the Polis, do you think they are just going to stand back and watch us upstarts enjoy our lives and triumphs over the forces of darkness, not a chance that the Peepul will fade away quietly they will go kicking and screaming and trying to besmirch our good name as they do.

Time for our Club custodians to do the right thing and to ultimately remember how far and wide our support is and how far and wide they travel and spend spend spend to keep Celtic running, anything thing else is appeasement to an enemy that would trample us into the ground giving the chance.

Thanks for all the B-day wishes Bhoys and Ghirls of CQN, it’s been a great day in the Starry house and it’s a grand old team to see…

Bring on the Saints, time to even up the score..

  10. estorilbhoy, not getting into the debate re the gb and the police. I know, personally, 5 serving police officers working in various strands off police work, including some areas that allow all of us to sleep a little easier at night. id call a couple off them friends, but all of them are decent people who have never done me anyes harm. none work on match days by the way -maybe thats the difference. any way, my point is- theres good and bad in every group, maybe ive just been lucky

  11. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Sanna……,

“theres good and bad in every group” very true, they must select through profiling for GB duty.

  12. prestonpans bhoys on

I’m starting to wonder if someone in the Celtic ticket office is having a laugh.

So far I have not been invited to one single domestic away game this season, even to places I normally get a ticket – AFC & DUFC to note. However I’m told that my away game attendance warrants tickets for the Barca and now Benfica away games ……

What is THAT all about …?….the GB are now major contributors to NEIL’s revolution, and if there is any evidence of them breaking any law(s) we need to try to collect / review it…….

Looked for you in the lounge on Saturday, take you were still wandering around the Nou Camp!

  25. Finally got PMGB’s book. It took me right back to a truly memorable occasion.

On May 9th 1998, members of the Perth Celtic Supporters Club (Western Australia) gathered together in the Irish Club in Subiaco.

There was no TV. There was no live feed from Radio Scotland.

All we had was the occasional update via the BBC World Service.

As you can imagine, we were crammed into the club with hardly room to move.

Full of expectation of our first title in 10 years. One that was to have far greater significance than any of us realised.

Little interest was paid to the radio most of the time as it was focussing on events south of the border.

Suddenly the presenter announced there’d been a goal at Parkhead and they went over to the reporter at the game.

Silence quickly fell in the Irish Club.

The reporter at Parkhead started his commentary : “Larsson” that’s all we heard. The room erupted in celebration.

That moment will live with me forever.

Much has been said about which event played the biggest part in the death of RFC.

Yes, big Jock’s achievements cannot be matched and obviously played the biggest part.

But that goal, by Henrik Larsson, WTT’s great gift to Celtic, not only stopped TIAR but proved to be the death-knell of RFC.

From WTT to FTT, so it was written. So it was done.
