Operation Get Lawwell Out

837

When Tony Mowbray was in charge of Celtic the club wrote to the SFA regarding the standard of refereeing in Scotland almost on a weekly basis.  The outcome of this correspondence was not constructive, if anything, some at the Association hardened their stance.

A lot has subsequently happened.

Yesterday’s Sunday Mail referred back to Celtic’s dialogue with the SFA during Mowbray’s tenure, which I found interesting.  Soon after, when a referee was found to have lied to Neil Lennon (and his supervisor), the association were vulnerable.  Wounds opened at that time which have not healed.

The ‘paper suggested Peter Lawwell is “Driven, obsessively controlling, politically statute, manipulative.  A master of the dark arts.  There’s nothing he won’t do to get Celtic what they want.  No-one he won’t attempt to control to get it”.

Quite a character assassination.  I wonder what they’re worried about?

We are also told that our chief exec has “An over-arching influence on every facet of the Scottish game. He could have had a crack at sorting it for everyone.  But no. That wouldn’t have sold any season tickets, would it?”

Those of you who bought a season ticket on the back of Peter Lawwell’s letter must feel the club went to extraordinary lengths to win your business.  The article shared the fantasy many football fans have that Peter Lawwell being on the SFA board means Peter Lawwell controls the SFA.  He doesn’t, but he is a formidable advocate of reform.

So what are they worried about?  From my perspective, pretty much everything.  The old ways were liquidated, we’re living in times with only one Super Power.  The old ways are gone and they are never coming back.

Calls for Peter Lawwell to resign from the SFA board because he “wouldn’t recognise the greater good” are laughable.  Those who interpret subtext will know this reads ‘Lawwell is an animated asker of difficult questions’.

What started five years ago with DVDs arriving at Hampden showing Robbie Keane yards onside has gotten a whole lot more serious, and personal, judging by the sustained attack on our CEO.  If you think this is about Celtic writing a letter about a referee decision a week ago you couldn’t be further from the truth.

Never try to manipulate a master of the dark arts.

This year’s CQN Golf Open will be held on Friday 24 July at Aberdour Golf Club. This is our 11th annual event and looks set to be a cracker once again. We shall be raising funds for one of our nominated charities and there will be a number of fundraising activities both on the day and in the weeks leading up to the event.

Please keep an eye open for details. Cost for the golf day is £80 including the meal at night. There are a limited number of night time places for non-golfers, cost £45.

CELTIC striker John Guidetti will discover on Thursday if he is to be punished for singing an allegedly “offensive” song about the demise of Rangers.

The on-loan Manchester City player had been due to appear before the Scottish Football Association’s disciplinary panel on 9 April but that hearing was postponed.

The SFA has confirmed the 22-year-old’s case will now be heard this Thursday.

Guidetti was issued with a notice of complaint last month after giving an interview to Dutch TV show FC Rijnmond.

In it, he repeats a chant sung about him by the Celtic support: “Oh John Guidetti, puts the ball in the net-y, he’s a Super Swede and the huns are deid, walking in Guidetti wonderland.”

Rangers fans claim the term “hun” is a sectarian slur – although supporters of other clubs insist it has no religious connotations.

SFA compliance officer Tony McGlennan accused the Swede of breaching a disciplinary rule.

It is not clear if Guidetti will appear before the Hampden panel but Celtic have already backed the player.

In a statement issued last month, a spokesman for the Parkhead outfit said: “We are very surprised and disappointed that this has even found its way to an SFA judicial panel. John Guidetti will be defending this charge.”

I wonder what time FIFA’s Jim Boyce is scheduled to intervene.

  4. Serious question:

If MASH’s only interest in Sevco is making money and he has pretty much shored up all the revenue streams, what incentive is there for him to continue keeping the mutant son of RFCil alive when they have no more money to give him?

What is the point in having a contract which says “pay me X thousand per month” when there is no X left to give?

  6. Hi Paul67,

As you predicted, there are those who seem to have PL in their sights, and are now gunning for him.

Rangers with their “Scottish Institution” status, spendthrift fuelled success and placemen throughout the hierarchy of Scottish football – their dominance in Scotland was unquestionable.

    Now of course after liquidation…

BTW: Congratulations to lowly Bournemouth, heard on the radio – it was a great achievement despite recently being on the cusp of liquidation three times.

The English are so yesterday, don’t they understand liquidation is the new resurrection.

…anyway the Ibrox newbie wants it’s birthright. With their flowing funds damned and their Institution status marred, it’s only the placemen that can stem the new world order in Scottish football. Seems they are intent on doing just that.

Hope PL can assist to bring in real change. An accountable, professional SFA is what we need.

Scottish Football needs a strong Aberdeen.

The penny seems to be dropping with other Clubs that, like Celtic, they need to challenge the SFA when necessary ……..

In Celtic’s case the SFA have done nothing about the ‘behaviour’ of referees towards our Club for DECADES…..

in respect of other Clubs, the example is being reported today that Motherwell are challenging being unable to allow their SB holders free entry to the play-offs

Seems straightforward enough that the SB affords entry to all league games …. what is it the SFA are not understanding….

Not sure if the M/well example is a great challenge to the SFA or just backing up the The Rangers request to do the same thing from 48 hours ago.

Whilst the principle of letting SB holders in for free to play-off matches is a sound one, it was a sound one when the SPFL clubs drafted the existing rule which forbids it. The time to make a principled challenge is when you are disinterested in the outcome and it is just a point of principle.

When you make the point just as you realise that you are going to be affected by the rule you approved, it is just a variant of NIMBYism.

Motherwell and Rangers are two clubs who should be relishing the income from the play-offs,regardless of the percentage they are allowed to keep.

    They’re potless.

Hibs and QOS are at least financially stable.

The fact that there were no Motherwell fans in the vicinity is indeed significant. The law says that the behaviour should be ‘deemed’ offensive. If there were no Motherwell fans to hear the chant, who exactly was being offended?

Yes in the past this may have been a simple case of a Breach of the Peace and in my opinion that should still be the case. Why is there a need to label it as something different simply because the perpetrator was a football supporter?

Hello again all you young rebels.

Despite the scepticism of some people i think there is without

doubt a concerted campaign ongoing against Celtic and Peter

Lawell,in all my years following our club iv’e never known such

an amount of vitriol which has been directed towards us, in my

humble opinion it’s down to the stickies p.r dept. and the

parasites in the media who are connected to them through the

wanky handshake clubs to try and deflect attention away from

their momentous problems, but in saying all that i can’t for the

life of me understand why we don’t take them on and bury them.

On a brighter note watched the wee fella’s soccer on Sun. morn

his team getting hammered 8-0 and him going mental at his

defenders attempts to tackle, after giving them a tongue lashing

  22. 67Heaven @ 08:16,

That is true, the lack of togetherness and support for the Board is damaging. As Celtic CEO PL is starting from a position of weakness. If we’re going to reform Scottish football, the support from multiple Clubs is crucial. If we won’t support our own, we have no chane.

It’s a shame, because I really think there’s a golden opporchancity. Rangers and their all seeing friends have encourage the idea that the quintessential Ibrox Clubs are a symbol, a beacon for the great and the better.

If so, why can’t they raise the £30m it needs for real Rangersmen to have control of the Club, it’s assets and it’s income streams.

In today’s terms it’s not a huge amount of money and although it would have to be looked on as a loooonnnggggg term investment in that respect the ROI risk must be minimal.

So why no money? Maybe they are not as well “connected” as they like to think. Maybe their old ideals don’t appeal so much these days.

If so, and it looks like it to me, maybe the placemen and their assistance is the last hope. PL must win this battle.

IMO,Labour made two huge errors over the referendum. Firstly they should have declared it a conscience vote, and made no attempt to coerce voters to vote no,and secondly they should have seen the potential for a disastrous swing to SNP as a result of the campaign.

That swing has surprised me in its severity. At the time,I foresaw losing about a dozen seats max in the General Election, but getting a tanking next year at Holyrood. What is gonna happen is beyond belief less than a year ago.

Had you like myself gone to a Celtic Trust meeting where the question was to attend an invite to contribute to the OB Bill discussion you would have seen the same dynamic discussed.

That is to attend and try and influence the debate or stay away because Celtic supporters had done nothing wrong so why should they go?

The starting position was not to attend but as the discussion flowed impassioned minds were changed by reason that it was best to attend to try and influence the debate.

Now many good points were raised but as we know minds were already made up and an unreasonable bit of legislation was passed.

The point is attend or not attend the result of what we can be up against will be the same.

The idea that Celtic not attending the summit would have changed anything is undermined by the very reasons for not attending the degree of bias at play.

Had we not done so is your argument that what emerged would be any different?
