Operation Get Lawwell Out

837

When Tony Mowbray was in charge of Celtic the club wrote to the SFA regarding the standard of refereeing in Scotland almost on a weekly basis.  The outcome of this correspondence was not constructive, if anything, some at the Association hardened their stance.

A lot has subsequently happened.

Yesterday’s Sunday Mail referred back to Celtic’s dialogue with the SFA during Mowbray’s tenure, which I found interesting.  Soon after, when a referee was found to have lied to Neil Lennon (and his supervisor), the association were vulnerable.  Wounds opened at that time which have not healed.

The ‘paper suggested Peter Lawwell is “Driven, obsessively controlling, politically statute, manipulative.  A master of the dark arts.  There’s nothing he won’t do to get Celtic what they want.  No-one he won’t attempt to control to get it”.

Quite a character assassination.  I wonder what they’re worried about?

We are also told that our chief exec has “An over-arching influence on every facet of the Scottish game. He could have had a crack at sorting it for everyone.  But no. That wouldn’t have sold any season tickets, would it?”

Those of you who bought a season ticket on the back of Peter Lawwell’s letter must feel the club went to extraordinary lengths to win your business.  The article shared the fantasy many football fans have that Peter Lawwell being on the SFA board means Peter Lawwell controls the SFA.  He doesn’t, but he is a formidable advocate of reform.

So what are they worried about?  From my perspective, pretty much everything.  The old ways were liquidated, we’re living in times with only one Super Power.  The old ways are gone and they are never coming back.

Calls for Peter Lawwell to resign from the SFA board because he “wouldn’t recognise the greater good” are laughable.  Those who interpret subtext will know this reads ‘Lawwell is an animated asker of difficult questions’.

What started five years ago with DVDs arriving at Hampden showing Robbie Keane yards onside has gotten a whole lot more serious, and personal, judging by the sustained attack on our CEO.  If you think this is about Celtic writing a letter about a referee decision a week ago you couldn’t be further from the truth.

Never try to manipulate a master of the dark arts.

This year’s CQN Golf Open will be held on Friday 24 July at Aberdour Golf Club. This is our 11th annual event and looks set to be a cracker once again. We shall be raising funds for one of our nominated charities and there will be a number of fundraising activities both on the day and in the weeks leading up to the event.

Please keep an eye open for details. Cost for the golf day is £80 including the meal at night. There are a limited number of night time places for non-golfers, cost £45.

We, all of us at some point, refer to someone else in a way that we expect them to take negatively. It is rarely our shining moment, but it happens, often to the people we love the most.

The moral road you outlined is great but is not to be confused with the legal road, but that is exactly what the OBaF Act appears to do. When stupid legislation is enacted and the legislators punt it’s enforcement of it down the line to whoever – polis, council, Royal Society – when the legislation is entirely interpretive then it becomes a subjective scrutiny of other agenda and manipulation.

The Scottish Government will meet with senior police and press them to help them show that the Act became law to meet a very real need, since one assumes that those same policemen had some say in the essence of the act.

The courts seem to have a different approach because they are much more independent of the legislature – until of course you’re the Chief Law Officer with that conflicted role he/she has had for a few years now.

It does seem that no one from the establishment wants to be seen to oppose this Act in public – definition of establishment is important. Such a close and closed community in Scotland, you might end up being treated like EPL referee Mark Clattenburg.

I saw the Ken Buchanan link go by yesterday and it reminded me of my first day in New York on June 26, 1972.

I arrived on a student only flight ( I was at Jordanhill at the time) into JFK and was scheduled to work in New York for six weeks. As part of the deal we were transported to a hotel in Manhattan for one night. In the lobby of the hotel were Pele and the Santos team. Needless to say I asked for and got his autograph. Either they were slumming or we were upgraded.

I then made friends with a couple of students from Edinburgh and we realized that Buchannan was fighting that night in MSG against Duran. Long story short we bought the cheapest tickets possible, but upon hearing our Scottish accents the ticket collector suggested we give him a few dollars then head downstairs too much better seats, ask for his buddy at that gate and he would take care of us. Worked a treat, we were one level above ringside.

As we all know Buchanan was mauled and well beaten by Duran plus the referee made a few honest mistakes not calling low blows by Duran. Something’s never change.

I dont buy that narrative for one minute. We do all this for ourselves continually and never manage to get any concessions or leeway whatsoever. We get voted down seemingly on the important stuff but ride to their rescue when needed. We play the permanently snookered card and it is abject nonsense. It only suots our plc.

Our (plc) permanent position as I have said before is not based on morals, principles or integrity but wanting our cake and eating it. Everything and anything is to do with maximising revenue. As is this latest skirmish.

Best of Luck to Rogic on his return from Injury..

Bhoy wonder: Rogic scores super solo goal

Tom Rogic has continued his impressive form for Celtic’s Development side scoring in their thrilling win over Kilmarnock on Tuesday morning (AEST).

The Socceroo playmaker is in just his second game back bagged the Bhoys’ second goal in their 3-2 victory at Rugby Park.

It was an encouraging display by the former Nike Chance winner, who showed some deft touches during his 61 minutes on the pitch.

According to the club’s match report, the 22-year-old was prominent from the outset and at the heart of all of Celtic’s dangerous attacks.

After scores were locked at 1-1 at the break, Rogic gave the visitors the lead with a great solo goal six minutes into the second half.

He spun away from two challenges just inside Killie’s half before driving towards the box and then rifling a shot beyond the keeper with the aid of a slight deflection.

The Socceroo was substituted just 10 minutes later with another solid hour under his belt and he edges back towards full fitness.

It’s encouraging signs not only for Rogic but also the Socceroos with FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers getting underway in June.

Ange Postecoglou’s side is away to Kyrgyzstan in their opening match.

I do have some sympathy with your view;I feel the same when we refer to them as monkeys. For me,a step too far(it also has strong racist/supremacist undertones)

However the point is not whether we should continue to call them huns, especially when they behave like huns. It is about being denied by law.

As I said earlier,it is pejorative, and should never be considered an offence under the OBaF Act.

  21. Aw Naw

The broadest of churches and that for me is our strength.

I agree about latent and often anxiously denied anti-Irish catholic sentiment in Scotland. I had house guests last year who took advantage of our hospitality and overstayed their welcome. We have a TV room all decked out in Celtic stuff and these morons refused to go into the room to watch anything. They will never stay here again.

You are wired differently to me and see things in a way that I don’t, and vice versa.

For Celtic to stand on a point of your principle seems to me would be catastrophic. They have to tread a finely balanced line between doing business with elements of whom they might reasonably disapprove and retaining some credibility with themselves and the fans. They can’t win for getting it wrong sometimes

What is you suggest that Celtic should do? Just curious.

It often seems that Celtic would rather be in England, or in a European league, or in an Atlantic league – in fact anywhere but Scotland. But the board’s principle duty as guardians is to ensure that the club firstly survives and secondly thrives in whatever market it operates within. It has existed in Scotland for 127 years and has thrived despite the often toxic Scottish environment.

In adversity we are tested and extended, and it is precisely that dynamic that has made Celtic as strong and as durable as it is. Turning our backs and walking away with no viable alternative proves and solves nothing. It seems to me little more than grandstanding on a spurious point of principle.

I am no apologist for capitalism but I want Celtic to survive regardless of the system in which it operates. The club has many areas in which it could improve relations and communications with the fans, but I am always curious about those who moan about the lowered attendance at Celtic Park these days, yet who walk past the front of the ground on match days. Would these moaners be looking for a ticket when we have a SPFL game against Sevco? I think they would, and they would have no qualms about looking themselves in the mirror either.

There are many lost souls from the kingdom of CQN and their contributions are sadly missed, but the rhetoric and sentiment at times on here is wretched and so un Celtic that I have had to take sabbaticals myself.

Respect is missing on here at times, plain and simple. Just because someone is not known to you (not you personally) or they are not one of your pals is no excuse for crass behavior or disrespect. If this place is not a rewarding place to be then folk will just find a place where they feel more at home. But to let a place become something that you resent is also wrong. Balance and tolerance.

  24. CELTIC look set to reignite their interest in Dundee United striker Nadir Ciftci.

Hoops boss Ronny Deila targeted the Turk in January.

But with United looking for £3million for Ciftci, Celtic instead snapped up Tannadice stars Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong.

But SunSport understands Ciftci is still on Deila’s list of potential summer targets as the Parkhead club ponders a £1.5m end-of-season bid.

The 14-goal, 23-year-old still has a year to run on his United contract but it is understood he would jump at the chance of moving on to bigger and better things.

United may also be tempted to cash in on a player who could sign a pre-contract with another club in January.

Fenerbahce are one of a number of foreign clubs keeping tabs on Ciftci’s situation.

But Deila and his backroom staff are huge admirers of the powerful hitman who they believe would be a good fit for Celtic.

With John Guidetti looking increasingly unlikely to pledge his future to them and Stefan Scepovic unimpressive, Celtic are eager to boost their attacking options ahead of the Champions League qualifiers in mid-July.

  26. The label hun is exactly that, nothing more than a label for supporters of The Rangers since they transferred their allegiance from Mk. I to Mk. 2. I don’t draw distinctions between the various moral and social skills of individual The Rangers fans, they are known throughout Scotland as ‘huns’, nothing sectarian associated to it at all.

I personally use it as the label I grew up with and which was happily accepted by the older generation of The Rangers fans as a term of endearment. I attach no derogatory meaning to the word whatsoever.

Now if the word hun gets criminalised… how long does ‘orc’ escape censor, or Sassenach, or any other word anybody deems fit to invent context and fit in issue with their delusion?

Even considering the criminalisation of such language should ring the loudest alarm bells. Now all the anti-paddymitism that we are so often subjected to, well you decide for yourself whether you consider it racist or sectarian.

  27. Off to London. But only for the day. Phew!

In short an end to the Old Firm. A trried and tested concept that we seem to want to hang onto and only to gladly. A concept that could also be argued that has sustained many of the positive virtues you have spoken about in your last post.

Our plc was well aware it was walking a tightrope when they released their latest ST terms and conditions. It had to expose themselves to their want of the bigot pound and where it ranks within their priorities.

A broad church as you highlight is a nice way of having your cake and eat it as I say. We want families and kids to attend but we want the bigot pound and value it more. Clear as day and undisputable.

The plc hoped that a treble would help entice those who would be put off by the return of Sevco. It is a numbers game. When that was put to bed and completely backfired due to Messrs Mc lean and Muir. Publicise Res 12. was put into action.

Paul67 has been hinting for weeks that Dave King managing Sevco by proxy would be acceptable to us. It is not an issue.

For our plc to sweep this all (The EBT years) under the carpet is unacceptable. Maybe I am too emotionallt caught up in what Celtic is supposed to stand for. Thw Bunnet talked about it being your identity.

I dont identify with how the club is run and its present identity.

The Bunnet knew what we were up against and why we were being marginalised and that we needed a billionaire on board.

Now thay they have been exposed and disposed off it seems that we are only to happy to keep quiet about it to make profit.

We are terrified about putting them in their rightful place so we can increase profits. Dressing it up as a catastrophic event. If Rangers can disgracefull phoenix any club can. It is not as if the Scottish public is going to stop watching football.
