Our game in jeopardy. There are no words

548

Footballers may be our champions, but you probably have little idea the trouble that goes into getting some mundane, but not contracted, tasks completed.  There are exceptions, but the industry has a hierarchical system where the powerful (players) make sure their powerless colleagues (anyone else employed by the club who is not the coach or CEO) know their place in the food chain.  Even within the players group, the hierarchy is alive and well.

I have seen this with my own eyes going back as far as Martin O’Neill’s team and it can be brutal.  “Welcome to the club, son, now you better start acting like Beyonce”, seems to be how it goes.  We treat them like pampered superstars and they behave accordingly.  They certainly don’t need to worry about the people who ultimately pay their wages, because their wages are guaranteed, often for years.

Today, I feel resentment towards players as a group, which I know is unfair.  All the minor infractions I have been aware of over the years were brought to the surface by one major infraction.  That’s judging a group by the actions of a few, and we have names for that kind of thinking.  Better to remember Callum McGregor and Scott Brown reaching out to the dying.  Some players ‘get it’ and I am grateful for that.

The game in Scotland and Celtic’s European campaign is in jeopardy because of the actions of one Celtic player.  There are no words.  He can take a taxi back to the airport in two weeks.  Some others could do with a dose of humility, and learn to behave less like divas and more like respectful adults.

  1. I wonder if the scrutiny will be applied to other teams regarding CoViD19 violations / sloppy practice / risk taking …

Funny that we now test for CoViD19 in the SPFL on a regular basis but seem to be very lax when it comes to performance drug testing.

  2. What are the medical grounds for calling our games off ?

I reiterate, under the guidance, if I lived with Boli, I would be able to go about my business unless he developed symptoms in which case, I self isolate too.

Why are we being stopped from playing with 0 positive cases or symptoms reported within our squad ?

Sturgeon is at it and Boli has provided her with the excuse, the clown that he is.

Yep. We can all relate to that one!

  4. TURKEYBHOY @ 1:08 PM,

No I won’t give it a rest, I wound my neck in and let it settle for most of last season.

Let’s not pretend anymore… with £40M in the bank last summer we should be in clover now.

If we had managed to get as far as Kopenhagen in Europe we wouldn’t have had to qualify for the UCL once we won the ten our co-eff would be such.

These decisions have real consequences for the Club.

Still, while I calm down… let’s see what Celtic are made off. For the first time in nine years we have a challenge. Let’s see how we react.

In my company the managing director made a clear statement in April. Any employee who goes abroad will self isolate when they came back

It was made clear that and we all sighed to

Understand our obligations and consequences of failure

I hope we see that info from Celtic

Without that shows negligence at very top and not just boli should walk

    _______

    https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/neil-lennon-admits-celtic-lockdown-22487928

He said: “We’ve had a chat with our players this morning just to REMIND them of what they can and can’t do.

“I know a few of them have been out in restaurants and adhering to the protocols of said establishments.

“But after what’s happened now then we’re going to have to nip all that in the bud.

“I have sympathy for a lot of the boys, they’ve had the whole lockdown, two or three months with no football.

“But now if you want to extend the season then you’re going to have to follow really strict guidelines and probably go back to the way it was before in terms of training ground, home, probably walk to the shop to get your amenities then go home again.

“The other thing is that players now know they can’t bring friends or relatives over from Belgium or other countries.

“That can’t happen any longer because then they would need to quarantine along with those people.

“It’s another example we’ve had to stress to our squad, if your family is abroad then you can’t have visits from them at the minute, it’s that simple.

“We’ve told our players and staff that, from now on, it’s training ground, home and games – that’s the way it has to be.”

  6. EMBRAMIKE.

If our games are postponed it can only be because of the chance of Covid transmission.

so you are spot on. They can’t play either.

  7. An Dun,

Boli popping down to Tesco to get you some fags, wearing a face mask and under controlled conditions is a bit different to travelling to a COVID19 hotspot that requires you to disclose and self-isolate for 14 days as a result.

  8. When did he go? Why was he not training? He had not played a game. Why did Celtic let him go away? Why was he in squad after not training? He should be sacked. We save money and don’t lose any transfer fee as no one with a football brain would buy him. And I don’ believe no one at Celtic didn’t know where he was going

  9. If the Government doesn’t expect Celtic to play matches “in the next week”, does that include next Tuesday when we are in CL Q1 ?

If I was Reykjavik I’d be asking if it was safe to play against Celtic or in Glasgow if Government is cancelling matches ”in the next week”

In fairness, you can’t expect to take shots at one chairman for breaches by his club’s player and then exempt another for similar incidents.

    _________

That’s Paul67 who decided to take those shots. Peter Lawwell has said nothing. Neil Lennon was far more forgiving of Aberdeen.

“Aberdeen will probably come under a bit of criticism as a club but the players have made a mistake and now one of them has tested positive for the virus. I hope he recovers well but it’s a lesson for everyone.”

  12. QUONNO on 11TH AUGUST 2020 1:20 PM

IT seems to to some, that Wee Nicolas other Celtic haters crowd funded the jaunt to Spain.

Deary me. Stupidity hardly describes that comment. One of our own worst enemies.

  13. MARADOMINIC on 11TH AUGUST 2020 1:21 PM

The players were given 2 days off and this is how he spent it. Boli didn’t miss a training session and did not inform anybody at Celtic about his trip.

  14. Timaloy. If that’s what has just come out now!!!! Then proves nothing in place before

  15. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Good shout from earlier poster about letting the dust settle.

Immediate impact is clear. Postponed games already in an unstable calendar.

Now on the back foot. 10 in a row just became harder.

There will be considerable resentment in the dressing room. Personally I see no way back for Bolingoli.

Oh, and our enemies at BBC Sport Scotland and Sky have just been handed free ammo.

Our reaction as supporters is important.

IMHO, time to knuckle down and support.

    Stakes are high.

    Keep The Faith

  16. If Boli was being really cute he could have travelled through Dublin and claimed that he was over to prep his pad / flat / villa for the upcoming rental season.

That excuse worked for the reptile that is Stanley J so he would have been OK with the Scum / Forger’s Gazette / Torygraph.

One rule for us / one rule for them.

  17. BIG WAVY

You’ve completely missed my point. Boli should be isolating as per the guidance but those in close proximity don’t need to if they never left the country and there’s no symptoms.

Boli should be banned but why is the rest of our squad ? What’s the medical grounds for that ? Should killie not be stopped from playing on the same grounds after coming into contact with Boli on Sunday ?

  18. There is no doubt this is an extremely serious situation. Best case scenario we are 2 League games behind the Huns in an already extremely congested calendar where we also have to play last season Cup Semi & hopefully Cup Final.

They will now smell blood & if as likely they win their 2 upcoming games, we will have one hell of a fight to retain our Title.

There must also be some doubt about our European participation, hopefully we don;t end up forfeiting our first round game.

We still don’t have all the facts and rumours are running thick & fast, who knew what & when.

Boli is obviously the main culprit, I imagine at this stage our Lawyers are examining his contract to see if we can legally sack him,

Who else is in the firing line, some are targeting Pedro & others Lenny.

Did we need to give players a 2 day Holiday after 1 competitive game etc?

I’m as upset and annoyed as anyone but lashing out at everybody is not helpful.

I think we all need to calm down a bit, and let the dust settle.

    ___

That was from last week. Not from now.

Effectively, after the Aberdeen scandal players were REMINDED of the rules. These rules had already been clearly stated but the club decided to REITERATE it to the players.

Boli ignored the guidance. He broke the clubs rules. He then withheld that information from the club.

It’s on him. Compliance has to rely on honesty from the players. What’s the alternative? An electronic leg bracelet?

  20. Sturgeon’s weasel words — we won’t be playing in the next week …

CL qualifier is currently scheduled for next Tuesday.

If BBG came back on the Tues 4th Aug — then his 14 days will be up on the 18th.

Might be some wiggle room to make things happen — or we could be oot on our erse.

Interesting to see how the SPFL puts a lot of effort into testing.

While Sturgeon — aka Not-Jacinda — seems to hate testing with a passion.

What’s the story with the game vs Reykjavik if the players have to quarantine?

Re mine from 1:21 above, there may be grounds for UEFA to have Celtic forfeit the tie as per UEFA’s recent rules addendum regarding Covid issues.

I sincerely hope not but you just can’t tell or make exceptions for one club (or one player).

Postponing league games is one thing but getting thrown out of the Champ[ions League would be heartbreaking. Fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that ! PL will have to deal with UEFA and get them onside.

  23. Think the clubs lawyers may have to act regarding any postponements.

No-one actually has the virus. Totally different to the Aberdeen situation.

  24. An Dun,

I don’t think that’s correct. Boli may have infected others, at home and in the team. We don’t know that yet. His self-isolation (now he’s been to a high risk place) should be as it suggests – confined to a room away from others in his house. Close proximity to players should also see them isolate in practice until the source can be traced and it doesn’t spread further. That’s how you eliminate the virus from spreading.

  25. Lenny said last week it was training then home, training then home so how did Bolingoli end up in Spain?

  26. My employer has given me a set of rules to allow me to go to work in a safe environment.

I ignore these rules and decide to do my own thing, without informing anyone.

How can that be perceived as anything what so ever to do with the business leader or my line management. Or the culture of the organisation.

Takes some leap to get to that conclusion.

    It is all on me.

“Let’s not pretend anymore… with £40M in the bank last summer we should be in clover now.”

Celtic had a rainy-day fund and guess what? The rainy day arrived in the form of Covid. Those funds also need to be earmarked for the Hotel development, Barrowfield redevelopment and sadly the court case regarding Celtic Boys club.

“If we had managed to get as far as Kopenhagen in Europe we wouldn’t have had to qualify for the UCL once we won the ten our co-eff would be such.”

    If my auntie had baws…

It’s cup football and Copenhagen have proven a tougher nut to crack than people thought. We’ve improved our coefficient massively over the last couple years.

Here’s the real secret: Clubs don’t budget for the best possible scenario. You aren’t going to get the best outcome every season so you have to make the club robust enough to withstand setbacks.

  28. No chance of getting the ten now. Well done Boli. Potentially 8 points down and fixture chaos looming

  29. We’ve had posters blaming the pitch for our result at the weekend- it should be banned.

Similar posters are now blaming the government for taking a conservative approach to lockdown breaches- we have no positive cases etc why prevent us playing football…

There is a glaring lack of self reflection here. These are our issues, let’s not go blaming others. This is 10IAR we are talking about but you really wouldn’t know it from the way the club is handling things.

  30. MARKIEBHOY

Trouble is there were no rules or likely sanctions laid out by the SPL before anybody erred at Rangers Aberdeen or Celtic.

Ironic, we are due to play Aberdeen at the weekend.
