Our game in jeopardy. There are no words

548

Footballers may be our champions, but you probably have little idea the trouble that goes into getting some mundane, but not contracted, tasks completed.  There are exceptions, but the industry has a hierarchical system where the powerful (players) make sure their powerless colleagues (anyone else employed by the club who is not the coach or CEO) know their place in the food chain.  Even within the players group, the hierarchy is alive and well.

I have seen this with my own eyes going back as far as Martin O’Neill’s team and it can be brutal.  “Welcome to the club, son, now you better start acting like Beyonce”, seems to be how it goes.  We treat them like pampered superstars and they behave accordingly.  They certainly don’t need to worry about the people who ultimately pay their wages, because their wages are guaranteed, often for years.

Today, I feel resentment towards players as a group, which I know is unfair.  All the minor infractions I have been aware of over the years were brought to the surface by one major infraction.  That’s judging a group by the actions of a few, and we have names for that kind of thinking.  Better to remember Callum McGregor and Scott Brown reaching out to the dying.  Some players ‘get it’ and I am grateful for that.

The game in Scotland and Celtic’s European campaign is in jeopardy because of the actions of one Celtic player.  There are no words.  He can take a taxi back to the airport in two weeks.  Some others could do with a dose of humility, and learn to behave less like divas and more like respectful adults.

Seems a train has just derailed outside Aberdeen

    …………..

SADLY…our quest for the magic 10 has been somewhat derailed by a Chump called Boli.

good luck to your lad – unfortunately it’s all to common nowadays that young people are coming out of university with a degree and little prospect of a job. He has shown great initiative to retrain and I’m sure he’ll be fine.

Neither of my sons wanted to go to university (much to my disappointment) and in stead went through apprenticeships and are now successful in their field. My daughter on the other hand ended up a bit like your lad but was lucky enough to find another career very quickly.

I’m not sure the observations about John Kennedy (and other Celtic coaches) from your seats at CP tell you anything about their coaching ability.

As you were involved in the coaching scene, you will know the difference between a coaching session, the bread and butter unobserved stuff at Lennoxtown, and the Warm-up preparations which take place before every match nowadays ( I remember a time when we laughed at the sight of Zoltan Varga doing stretches on the pitch because our boys thought warm ups were for cissies and a wee dram got you set up for a game).

In a training session, which neither you or I get to look at, the players and coaches work on drills to develop technique, team shapes and tactics, and individual set plays.

In the warm up, the player is getting their eye in again for ball control and building up a sweat before a hectic game starts so that they are not sluggish. If we wanted to drill heading the ball away from the area, then do it at Lennoxtown when there are more coaches and spare men to recover the headed away ball. If John Kennedy threw a ball to a plyer’s head and he heads it 20 yards left, right, or behind himself, somebody has to recover that ball and you get to practice heading for one-third of the time available to you. Defenders have to practice “touch” heading too, directing the ball to a team mate but again, most drills for that will be done during the week. All you are seeing before a match is a warm up, youu rarely see coachin, at that late stage.

The one exception I ever saw to that rule was the worrying sight of Danny McGrain explaining to Amido Balde, the shape of a ball and how to trap it. Poor Danny- should have got a medal for his efforts there, even though they were ultimately unsuccessful.

Oh! and it does help if training is fun and varied, rather than repetitive and dull. Repetition is important but there are several drills which can hone each football technique. Perhaps, George Graham should have learned a few variations on his “tying a rope” on 4 players defensive-coaching before he bored them and trained them to bore us.

Some sports, like my own and American Football and Rugby (League in particular) are very suited to regimentation and drill, as they have more set play situations. Others like Football and Basketball are a bit more fluid and varied. All can benefit from a judicious mixture of drill with flair training.

Unless, we are regular visitors to Lennoxtown, we are in no good position to judge how effective we are with our mixture.

  5. Big Jimmy- since pubs opened up,no music and no sound for live football, not sure where Friday’s date is coming from?

“With all this useless coaching,I just wonder how we ever managed to win so many trophies, over the past 9 years”

This is a very interesting point. On one hand, we have those who use 9iar as evidence supporting the 10.

The contrary argument, and one which I subscribe to, is that over the course of the 9 we have had various coaches. Various styles, various successes in the transfer market.

Are we at the top of the curve at the moment? Are we operating at peak across all areas of the club? I would suggest not and it is a look back to some of those other years within the 9 which is concerning me. We have definitely regressed since our high water mark of 3 to 4 years ago.

Make no mistake, the 10th will be our toughest one yet!

  7. BADA BING…

After those barmaids advised me about Juke Box and THIS Fridays banned date…my mate who owns the Pub and told me that there was nothing defo, but the Juke Box and TV/Radio music Ban has apparently been mooted by the Scot Govt, to the Licensed Trades…Pubs Hotels etc ?

  8. How are people measuring regression?

Sorry. Scrap that. How can we say regression when we’ve cleaned up for over 3 years now ?

  9. The Battered Bunnet on

Judging by the considerable number of ambulances at the scene, the train that has derailed near Stonehaven is not a goods train.

    God help those caught up.

  10. I can still play the Juke Box in my local Pub Today…as I did yesterday…and others did so as well.

I am also confused as in my local we are NOT allowed to stand or sit at the Bar.

However, on the issue of the Lockdown in Aberdeen last week, the News cameras were in at least one Pub that same afternoon before the 5pm Lock Down started…however the News crew interviewed some Punters who were sitting at the Bar on Bar stools.

I thought why are they allowed to do that in Aberdeen when he in Glasgow I cant sit or stand at the Bar ?

  11. Had we not dropped the two points last weekend, the fans’ reaction to Boli’s away day, IMO, would have been less strident. Those who habitually blame Lawwell and Nicola Sturgeon for everything are able to fill their boots. We have posters conflating the Scotgov’s actions on the exam issue with their decision to postpone two Celtic games. Really? And then we have those who conflate the general running of the club with Boli’ decision to sneak off to Spain. Again, really?

Lenny is raging at Boli, who has with aforethought, deliberately flouted his orders. How can any boss/ club plan for that?

What is all this rubbish about John Kennedy being a shite coach? Who on here knows, or who is qualified to judge? Two top defenders have left Celtic to star for top clubs in England. Furthermore, two former midfielders , whilst not starring, have prospered down south. Hardly the result of shite coaching.

I also think the bedwetters are spooked at the lack of new faces in the squad.

Had the Boli fracas happened last week, after the Hamilton game, the reaction would have been much muted.

We still need those new faces. Lenny has said so. None of us seem to rate our new £5m striker. How’s about we wait and see how he can play before we rush to judgement?

Folk have their viewpoint on all things Celtic, and they interpret any event in such a way that reinforces that view. That’s iife!
