Our midfield squad shuffle. Leigh, the panto misfit

550

I know what you are thinking, Ewan Henderson looked the part.  Even more so than his brother, Liam, who also left Celtic for a loan spell at Hibs, before moving to Italy.  That laser-precise pass at Tynecastle which set Celtic on their way to an important victory when Neil Lennon picked up the pieces left by Brendan Rodgers pointed to riches ahead.

Unlike many apparent teenage prodigies, Ewan never disappointed, trouble was, he did not play often enough to disappoint.  All we know for sure is that Lennon did not rely on him and after six months at Lennoxtown, Ange Postecoglou has moved him on.

Hibs, managed by Shaun Maloney, who worked with the player as a Celtic youth coach, is a good move.  He has a realistic chance of commanding a regular first team place in an aspirational side.  Celtic released him permanently for little more than an initial loan agreement that will prevent Ewan from facing them for the remainder of this season.

With two midfielders already signed this month, it is no surprise that Ismaila Soro is set to follow Ewan out the door.  For reasons that continue to perplex, MLS clubs continue to swoon around the edges of the Celtic squad, with New York Red Bulls reportedly hoping to add Ismaila to a list of former Celtic misfits that includes Patryk Klimala, Cameron Harper and Lewis Morgan, the latter moving from Inter Miami last month.

Another midfielder on the move is 20-year-old summer recruit from Sheffield Wednesday, Liam Shaw, who will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Motherwell.  Liam was one of the success stories in the win over Real Betis in December.  The move to Fir Park will hopefully give him an opportunity for first team football, it should also give you and me a better chance to assess his potential.

The Dundee pantomime season officially ends this week (oh yes it does) and Dundee are wondering what use they have for our on-loan panto act, Leigh Griffiths.  We are short of striker talent and Ange is still new to Scotland, so may be unfamiliar with how things work.  The panto season is also over in Glasgow, Leigh’s time at Celtic must also be over.

10 sleeps ’til Hibs.

Where in the US are you? I lived Upstate New York for a year many moons ago ( although it doesn`t feel like that !).

  2. IF and it’s still IF we get more than two called up for international games, I will be seriously disappointed if we don’t request a postponement of the games they will be gone for, so far, it’s IMO been proven that our squad is not good enough when our best players are out, the St Mirren game should tell us that, I can see the carnage unfolding if we don’t and we lose at home agin the hun, thing is, I have never been of the opinion that we want to throw the league, but I am of the opinion that the suits believe that the OF is the be all and end all, we will see soon enough I suppose.

  3. Wee bit concerned that there’s reports of Udinese coming back in for Welsh. Letting him go for a modest fee isn’t a good idea especially as we have no idea what to expect from Jullien when he finally makes his come back.

Welsh is on a long term contract and should be kept for at least another year to see how he develops, so far I think he’s doing fine.

    MCPHAIL BHOY

Just looked him up. Ian Joy, played left back for Stirling Albion and Montrose, Tranmere, and a host of others. Peddled CV into career on US TV yapping complete nonsense in sound bites about fitba loudly and at 100 mph. Impossible to listen to without muting.

These guys are instructed to yak at super speed before and after the game and at half time to allow for adverts. Sounds really unnatural.

    —————————–

I think I remember that guy from one of our Europa league matches when I got a stream from ESPN? It was hilarious how Joy and some American guy who were reporting on several games at half time. They clearly not only didn’t know any of the players or the teams but they on several occasions made some absolute laugh out loud pronouncements on which countries they were from, we got everything under the sun up to and including the Narnia champions! The ladt bit I made up but you get my drift. I’d imagine most US viewers would have been none the wiser.

  5. 3 or more called up,no chance we should play. What was the point in getting the guys in quick,up and running, then

losing them for 3 massive games.Celtic owe it to the people who bought S Ts,to do the right thing.

    Season has been extended before.

There are strange things done in the cold north sun

    By the men who who to Celtic are sold;

The Soccer trails have their secret tales

    That make Ibrox blood run cold;

The Parkhead Lights have seen queer sights,

But the queerest they ever did see

Was that night where we skelped the Sevco hordes

with a hat trick from Riley McGree.

Now Riley McGree’s from Adelaide see, where the copper miner goes,

Why he left his home in the South to roam, up to Glasgow God Only Knows

He was always clold but the green, white and gold seemed to warm his very soul

Though he’d often say, in his homely way, “The Huns are all arseholes”

  9. Tim H- i couldn’t believe the company scrapped it, huge show, was getting better, i thought Netflix or similar would have picked it up HH

My opinion is, Celtic fans are ill-served at Airdrie this season.

I asked a steward about team sheets when I arrived at gate today, probably twenty five minutes before kick off. He said we’re printing them now, one of the staff will bring them round the crowd. A nonsense, of course. Also, a limitation for those like me who don’t travel around with the internet on their person.

The £8 ticket is paid to Airdrie, not Celtic. We were better treated in Greenock (not Dumbarton).

  11. What is the Stars on

Delighted for Cape Verde winning 1 0 over Ethiopa in AFCON tonight

Roberto Lopes (Pico) playing at centre back for Cape Verde.

Pico is from Dublin and plays for Dublin Hoops (Shamrock Rovers) himself and Liam Scales often played together as part of a back 3 for Rovers. He is 29 and only got his first cap for Cape Verde 2/3 years ago

His dad is a sailor from Cape Verde (Just like Henrik) who unlike Henriks dad had the sense to marry a Dublin woman.

    Or is that misfortune 😎

  12. An Dun,

I would also hate to see Stephen Welsh go for a relatively modest fee He is only starting to realise his potential.

Unless we get an offer we cannot refuse I would reject any bids.

We have reared Stephen from youth and are getting the benefit from his loan spell at Morton.

Just what is the point of an academy if we let our promising players go at the first calling and take in youngsters from all over the shop. ?

    HH.

Absolutely disgusting decision by the Aussie government allowing this whacko into there country.

A terrible decision for ordinary folk and the sacrifices they have made.
