Our redoubtable former manager

1226

No one on Celtic Quick News ever doubted Gordon Strachan, did they?

It’s been a long 8 years since that dark week but our former manager demonstrated enormous resilience to win three consecutive league titles and twice qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.  He is perfect for the Scotland role, although, to be frank, I didn’t think his squad had last night’s result in them.  Well done to all.

We have a special Father’s Day offer for the Willie Wallace book.  Order between now and Thursday morning and we’ll include a Father’s Day card, complete with your own message. See the big graphic to the right..

You can choose from two cards, see explanation and choices here, one with Tony Watt after scoring against some Spanish lot, the other with Billy McNeill receiving some trophy or other.

Click on the button below, enter the text you would like to appear in the middle of the card, and Tony will post your book off in time for Father’s Day.

You can always tell when you have the upper hand in a debate – the other party will resort to throwing insults. This is generally because they have either exhausted their limited vocabulary, or have run out of relevant points of view, or perhaps both.

I should have remembered that old maxim – “Never debate with fools and idiots; they will attempt to drag you down to their level where they believe they have a chance to beat you by using their experience”.

    A point I now remember . . . . . .

Love Street ’86, I was offshore and caught the end of the match on BBC World Service. A truly brilliant and unbelievable end to the season.

  6. Re. Celtic’s silence, didn’t fat Sally use the phrase “our friends over on the other side of the city decided they didn’t want us” when they were refused entry into the SPL/Div1?, so, the slightest reference about “thems” from us, will unleash hell.

I believe that there should be some questions asked of our game’s Office-Bearers, whether it comes from other clubs, or a young and naive journalist, I dont know, but while no-one questions them, Scottish football will continue to be run for the benefit of one club!

  8. Just back from Reamonn Gormley football festival in Hamilton, lots of good football played in a sporting manner in the sunshine. Team from Larkhall derserved to won it, my nephews team were second. Great community occasion and the late Davie Cooper statue over looking the matches. Well done to all for a great day out and a good legacy for Reamonn.

  10. Love St 86: Indeed, season 85-86.

I will never forget a big mouthed, mini-hun at work. Ever since Christmas he had the biggest mouth in the entire workplace. On and on and on about how the jambos were cruising to the title blah blah blah.

And the day after the roof fell in, he quit the job rather than face up to the verbal mauling he was going to cop from everyone at work.

Seriously, he was never seen at work again!

I also recall seeing my neighbour across the street. Another lifelong Jambo. Seeing him trudge his way down the street to his house, after his long trip home from Dundee, like the entire weight of the world was on his shoulders. I actually felt sorry for him.

OK, tell the truth, I was rolling about laughing. But there was a teeny weeny hint of pity there too.

Never have I enjoyed so much watching so many grown men bubbling away like a bunch o’ wains.

Anyone who thinks that not being a resident in a country never mind a national of that country should therefore not be allowed to comment on political affairs is one of extreme racism. Born out of stupidity. Regardless of how much family, property, ownership of companies one may have in that country. Its just kuckledragging racism.

    Love St 86.

Was at the game at the St Mirren end and we played some great football in the first half. Remember the rumours going around that Dundee had scored but in those days the man with the knowledge was the man wi the tranny. Tranny man confirmed the rumours in the second half and bedlam ensued – after our season it was only the true supporters that believed we could do it, and it was only true fans that were there in those days.

I was living in Edinburgh at the time and worked in a bar at weekends so had to leave after the game to get to work – saw all the celebrations though. My memory was being on a ‘Special’ from Gilmour St. I rarely went on ‘Specials’ and tried to avoid them if I could, but had no option. Got in to Central and had to do the dash to Queen St. I was one of the first off the train and walking along Gordon St with most of the Celtic fans about 100m behind when I saw a large crowd of Hun casuals coming around from Buchanan St. Instinct told me to head up to St Vincent St, and as soon as I turned into W Nile Street the casuals were running along to ‘greet’ the Celtic support – a pitch battle ensued, but I managed to avoid it.

Got to work in a well known establishment in Edinburgh – my colleagues were a Hibbee, a Hun, and two Jambo’s and it was a great night.

Best thing was, the next week I was at work and we had the Jambo’s as hosts for the (planned) Cup Final Celebration. Interesting being a fly on the wall at that do!

What a front-line we had in those days – and if I remember correctly Squiggle came on as a sub for St.Mirren!

  25. Dear Scottish Football Association

There is evidence circulating that an (Associate) Member club has been bringing the game into disrepute for some considerable time. Please consider the following and please act “appropriately” . That is “appropriately” for the benefit of Scottish Football, and the member club concerned. The member club is either being smeared or is guilty of criminal acts undertaken as a member club of your association. An urgent enquiry is required, either to clear them or to charge them .

Individuals acting for or directly employed by Rangers Football Club are accused of , but not limited to, the following acts which most fair minded individuals would rightly consider, if true, to be bringing the game into disrepute, as well as criminal in intent.

1 Suggesting bribing a Tax official to provide confidential information to the owner of Rangers Football Club. That information was on a fellow director of Rangers Football Club

2 Endangering the safety of UK Government officials by attempting to release personal details via the press. Additionally suggesting that these employees, against whom there is no proof , are placed in a position of fear.

3 Suggesting that supporters of another member club abused their position as tax inspectors to damage Rangers. This is illogical even by the warped standards applied by any PR advisor, given Rangers had already admitted guilt in one tax case with tax avoided of £2.8 million

4 Taped evidence is in circulation of extensive meetings between a banned individual and the successful purchaser of Ranges assets from the administrator. This evidence, if genuine, would very strongly suggest that the assets were purchased in breach of The SFA’s clear order that Craig Whyte not have any involvement with any Scottish Football Club

5 Further taped evidence , if genuine, suggests that the SFA are powerless to act against UEFA, with claims that Rangers will be able to successfully bribe UEFA. Has UEFA been informed of these claims , and what is their reaction?

Supporters of all clubs , who are the lifeblood of the game, need to have confidence in the governing body. Confidence ,like trust, is earned and not merely freely given. The SFA has, by its own admission, a heavily conflicted President sitting at the top of the organisation. The SFA , by its own admission , attempted to engineer a unique situation where a liquidated member club was allowed to reform and enter at the 2nd highest level of the professional game. Jumping over 30 other member clubs, none of whom have been guilty of an offence second only to match fixing.

The position of the SFA President is surely untenable, and his continued presence only increases suspicion that the SFA is not acting in a neutral manner. Sponsors and supporters are entitled to have their sport governed by a body, which is above suspicion and acts in a manner which is transparent and neutral and is seen to be transparent and neutral.

Doing nothing is not an option. All leaks in circulation may be the work of someone who has fabricated information to damage Rangers. However given the leaked tapes contain larger elements of earlier taped conversations, which have already passed legal scrutiny at several media outlets , and have not been challenged for authenticity by any of those claimed to be involved. Then in those circumstances there must be a very strong case for immediate investigation by the SFA
