Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

  1. Turkeybhoy,

The SNP MSPs who came up with the law openly said it was to “get” us, as there was legislation already covering racism and sectarianism on the statute books. So, it has only to be what “someone deems offensive”. Utter nonsense.

IMO your are equating the behaviour of zombie louts with that of Celtic supporters.

    Incorrect conclusion to make bud.

They are louts with a track record for loutish behaviour , we on the other hand make friends and win awards.

    Bada,

I was actually gonna add something in my post about hopefully we ain’t playing in some 2 games in 3 days tourney ;)

  7. I agree that if you play a Thursday the game should be shifted to a Sunday. I’m pretty sure it cost us a league a few seasons back.

But….I’d rather clubs asked for europa games to be played on a Tuesdays and Wednesdays on separate weeks from cl. But that’s another argument.

    Biological and physical recovery time.

That might be two reasons mind you.

I have no problem with it – shifting games back 24 hours – we did after all lose a league on the points dropped following the UEFA Cup tie versus Batumi in 95/96, in which we dropped 5 points on the Saturdays following games played on the Thursday.

That September we played Saturday- Thursday- Saturday- Tuesday- Saturday- Thursday- Saturday. That’s 7 games between 10th and 30th of September.

The final match was versus Ranger in the League, 12.30 kick off, 38 hours after the Thursday game at home to Batumi had finished. We lost.

We also lost the Tuesday night game in the League Cup, against Rangers again.

After the first leg in Batumi, the team played Motherwell at home, 16 hours after landing back from Russia.

Our requests for a 24 hour delay to kick offs was rejected.

5 points dropped in 2 games, and we lost the league by 4 points.

The rules were adapted accordingly shortly afterwards.

    Quite rightly.

    The only solution is…

…to qualify for the Champions League every year :¬)

Give me one good reason why, following a home EL match Celtic need to play the following league game on the Sunday.

    ________

Good point mate, with the size of our squad, I reckon we should be able to put a winning team out on the Saturday.

With the peanuts we get from television, is it actually a loss maker for us as well as a total inconvenience for supporters…it’s time it was addressed by the board.

It’s all well and good, thinking what’s best to help other clubs, but our support should be first and foremost.

I don’t go to sunday games, especially early kick offs, as it is too much to lose in overtime that helps pay for my season books…dilemma!

By: Mark Henderson in Turkey on 09 Jan, 2014 11:01

VIRGIL van Dijk reckons that Celtic´s winter training camp in Turkey is a timely break for the players after a gruelling first half of the season.

Some of the Hoops squad have featured more than 30 times since the campaign got underway in mid-July.

And, most recently, a frenetic festive fixture schedule has further tested the resolve and character of Neil Lennon´s men.

However, they passed that examination, with Sunday´s 4-0 hammering of St Mirren stretching the unbeaten league record this term to 20 games.

It´s been a magnificent effort from the Scottish champions, and van Dijk told Celtic TV that the trip to sunnier climes would help him and his team-mates recuperate.

“To come here 20 games unbeaten is good and we can relax and enjoy the sun,” he said in an exclusive interview with the official Celtic website. “We need some rest as all the boys have played a lot of games.

“It´s been very good – the weather is nice, the sun is out and we have a blue sky so it´s been much better than Glasgow.

“It gets you smiling again and makes you happy. The conditions here are really good and I´m looking forward to the game.”

The Dutchman has been in fantastic form in the heart of the Celtic defence alongside Efe Ambrose, and he has been a major reason behind the run of seven successive shut-outs.

And with the club´s clean sheet record fast approaching on the horizon, he´s keen for the run to continue when the Hoops resume league action.

“It´s good to break records – it´s good for the team and also the goalkeeper as he does a tremendous job for us. It´s down to the whole of the team and all the players as we all do a good job attacking and defensively.

“We want to keep this unbeaten run to the end of the season and concede the least amount of goals as possible, and we will see how it goes.”

It is good to see revolutionary Ronnie thinking like Lenny. Do we have a USA tour this summer ?

  14. The Battered Bunnet on

    Heck,

Just looking at the fixtures that season…

… we got Paris SG in the next round.

We played in Paris on the Thursday, and then dropped 2 points v Kilmarnock on the Saturday.

That’s now 7 points dropped on the Saturday following a Thursday Euro tie that season

We lost the league by 4 points.

We lost only one league match that season, versus Rangers, on the Saturday following the Thursday night game v Batumi.

  15. The Battered Bunnet

We lost the league in September?

Or we lost to the Bank of Scotland’s first eleven?

  16. TBB,

Celtic mac specified EL games at home.

The tampering with just regular fixtures out with Europe, is definitely having an affect on supporters being able to make the games they have pre-paid for. HH

  17. Burghbhoy,

I cant really be @r-sd arguing about this.No matter what anyone says,or what figures are produced, someone will come out with the old”Aye but”.

If you are telling me that all Celtic fans are innocent, and always well behaved, sorry.I must have been blindfolded on all my european trips. Many on here slaughtering the Scotland supporters for doing the exact same things I have witnessed many Celtic fans do.

I was a Jungle punter.I sang songs regarded by the majority on here as repugnant now.Offensive, sectarian, you better believe they were.Thats why we sang them.

The old “Ones as bad as the other”,was true in the hymnsheets then.

Fergus put an end to it all.

If you think the huns get of lightly with this OB act, check out their songsheet now.

No BB,no FTP,no NPOR.Many at Celtic Park are now offended by a few of the songs the BB sing,or so most of the Celtic forums say.Not me.

The Act is crap, because anyone can be offended by anything.Making up stories to condemn it is stupid.

You have a point on the physio side granted. England made six changes from their Saturday game while Scotland made one from the Friday match against Ireland. Even though according to WGS everybody showed up in training and were desperate to play. Might not have showed up on the Tuesday mind you. We have got a big squad of players, play as many Saturday games as possible, albeit not after playing in the likes of Albania or Georgia, back in the day.

  23. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

My 14 year old son asked why can’t the europa league games be played on alternate weeks from champions league matches, which I thought was a good idea.

However, this would interfere with dates for international matches.

The champions league may be the place to be for revenue & prestige but its the main reason why international qualifiers & friendlies are being played in June. The Scotland game in Dublin is on the thirteenth of June, what’s that all about.

Some champions league games are getting played on nights previously scheduled international fixtures.

With Broonie suspended on Saturday and Mikael injured, we need to get our team set up right as they are two of our most effective & influential players .

I have no idea what team will be selected but I hope we start off with a good tempo and our players do their jobs.

“In section 1(4)— (a) “disability” means physical or mental impairment of any kind,

    (b) “transgender identity” means any of the following—

    (i) transvestism, (ii) transsexualism, (iii) intersexuality, (iv) having, by virtue of

the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (c.7), changed gender, (v) any other gender identity

that is not standard male or female gender identity. ”

You could go to jail if you call a hun a retard, a poof or a fanny

    where will it end?

  26. Ireland fielded an entirely new eleven against the USA. In second half when the tempo had dropped made a few changes and brought on a few of the established players.
