Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

    but we where young and fanatical then, now im jusg old and cynical.

    —–

    True that :-)

    I’m in a different position. After years of going weekly, I now can’t go at all for family health reasons. Can’t tell you how crap it is not to go. It gives me a very different view on all things Celtic.

    Oddly, it’s not the big games I miss most. For example, given the choice of AC Milan at CO, or Dundee utd at Tannadice, I would go to Dundee every time.

    That keeps my cynicism in check ( but it’s not a price worth paying:-))

    see my answer to stringer bell, i have passed my fanatasism onto my 14 yo ..

    I go to few games now but i enjoy meeting and having a laugh with my mates more than the actual match. Maybe its the all seated stadia, maybe its me or maybe its Celtic..

    A statement from the AGM itself will reach more folk than any statement on the Celtic Web site that is not made at the AGM.

    Lets discuss sideline swiping and reasons thereof?

    What would you like to howitzer?

    I would suggest:

    Celtic jettisoning their best players/managers/staff to maintain exec bonus level to the detriment of the club or who owns rangers car park

    ——–

    I’m not sure I know how to howitzer?not sure if that’s a typo? Genuinely.

    I can’t see a connection between celtics staffing and the rangers car park. I have tried. Still can’t make the link.

    I’m sure you will wittily put me right.

    cause… we are Celtic supporters faithful through

    and through.

  6. Some Celtic “fans” are only happy when they are moaning or better still slagging off the club.

    Let’s face it if we were in the CL QF/SF every year MM would be complaining we never get further.

    If we never won it, the style wouldn’t be right.

    Can’t please some folk. Makes you wonder why they bother.

    I mean the last three years have been hell. Celts win league & play in Champions League while bootleggers blow a fortune to beat Queens Park, Stenhousemuir and Forfar to get all the way to 2nd in the Championship.

    Has it ever been so good?

    I’m not a Ronny fan but I accept you can’t have everything.

  7. if you dont mind me jumping in …

    The question was asked ‘is it better or worse now?’ …

    In some ways, better as Sevco have been put in their place… and we have undoubtedly seen some period of football that were worse ..

    In some ways worse, as we have seen some periods where the football was MUCH better… but, in those dark periods, what made it bearable was that I always felt like it was ‘us against them’… the club, players, board were on the same side, united against ‘the forces of evil’…. now, I do question that. Do I believe that the people running Celtic want Sevco back in some form? Yes, I think they believe (mistakenly) that it will be better financially for the club (and them) if that is the case….

    from that respect (the board siding with Sevco and others versus the fans, and there being a divide within the club), I think the club is at one of its lowest points in its history.

    Some weak-points in the Rangers side, in my opinion, are:

    * McCulloch — no speed

    * Boyd — no speed

    * Zaliuskas — no speed

    * Moshni — no speed

    I’d like to see Rangers consider alternatives to these players.

    H,mm,let me try to help.

    Douglas bader

    Long John Silver

    Bruce Forsyth.

    I think we all go through such periods.

    Not trying to be over dramatic but the club has been the one constant in my life and has brought me such joy.

    Sometimes I think our desire for Celtic to progress fuels criticism to incredible levels. See it on Cqn daily.

    A statement from the AGM itself will reach more folk than any statement on the Celtic Web site that is not made at the AGM.

    – I strongly disagree. many more people can and have access to the website. I’ll also asked you to refer me to the statement regarding the resolution read by the board at the AGM last year. There’s no transcripts or recordings from any statements. It’s not good enough IMO for people outside the room to rely on feedback from what those in it remember and then tell them a summary using their own words.

    One share-holder who signed the requisition for the resolution last year tweeted today that he thinks covering it at the during the Q&A is disrespectful. I agree.

  13. Whats res 12 this year?

    The living wage?

    Park it. We’ll discuss at the Q&A session in 2015 AGM. No notes or recordings please.

  22. How anyone who calls themselves a Celtic supporter can even contemplate a defence to the OB bill, is way beyond me.

    How anyone who calls themselves a Celtic supporter, and ‘knows their history’ can even contemplate having ANYTHING to do with the SNP, is way beyond me.

    Sure the Labour party has it’s problems, however they remain the ONLY party EVER to do anything for the working class – I won’t list their achievements, it’s too long.

    What have the SNP ever done for the working class = ZILCH
