Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

  2. Today’s favourite goal is from the same season as yesterday (2001/02), when Martin O’Neill’s unstoppable Celtic side were on their way to 2 in a row. The goal is from another match where Celtic blew away the opposition in a single half (following the theme Granny Macs Bhoy and I discussed yesterday). Part of the reason that this goal sticks in my mind (apart from it’s belterness) is that it was scored in my favourite Celtic away strip.

The goal is the first of Celtic’s 4 first half goals against Hibs at Easter Road.

I note they divide into three components.

    The fans

    The club

    The owners

Then spend the rest of their time outlining what everyone else but the owners should be doing.

  7. I think it’s only fair to ask who on CQN works for the Post Office and could be the UFH or Fenian Agent Provocateur behind this outbreak of stamp madness……..

When Paul is doing maintenance on CQN, he will shut down the server. If I try to open CQN during that time, I will get “Server not responding”. So if you are getting that message, you are trying to open a website or app which is down or not working. Nothing you can do until it comes back up.

  12. My goodness gracious me is this really the Mick O’Malleys that used to be liberally sprinkled with visiting and resident Celtic Supporters?

If the Celtic Trust represent the ethos of Celtic so much, why do they have such dreadful membership numbers?

Some popular CQN causes don’t resonate at all with the wider Celtic support.

Firstly, how do you know how many members the CT has?

Secondly, what popular CQN causes are you referring to?

We may not agree all the time, in fact it would be unhealthy to do so but surely if an argument remains within acceptable parameters of the blog then it should not be trashed by personal comments.

    Who vets the vetters ?

Simple Yes or No question – I’m only interested in FACTs, not opinion like what ou get in books and stuff.

    Geordie, you were right.

HT, figures have been in NTV and other Celtic publications. A couple of thousand members at most. Has their membership grown?

See DavidPolous’ point about signatures for the living wage, most Celtic supporters haven’t signed it. It is a minority cause.
