Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

    In the past two years,

Number of Celtic fans lifted 112

Number of hun fans lifted 144.

Why take those figures in isolation of the lifespan of the Act? Compare and contrast those figures with the stats for the previous 10 years, therein lies the story of pavement bigotry and executive bigotry. All the numbers are freely available on-line.

The Act actually allows for me, being a Scotsman, leaving home in Australia, stopping off in Singapore for a few nights on the lash with the SingTims, where we sang a couple of ‘proscribed’ songs, getting back on the plane, stopping off in Frankfurt and going on the lash with some of those German Tims, getting back on the plane and arriving in London where I took in the sights before heading to Scotland where two weeks later I went to a Celtic game and was charged under the Act for singing proscribed songs almost three weeks earlier in Singapore, because some person thought it offensive.

I support all those who are denied the living wage.

I don’t personally know any of the Celtic staff deprived of the living wage but i’m sure they wouldn’t see it as if I’m intruding, much in the same way that I don’t personally know any Celtic supporters detained as a result of the Offensive Behaviour Bill and I’m sure they wouldn’t see my support for them as an ‘intrusion’.

    Gerry Braiden

ALLEGATIONS that Glasgow City Council broke the law in historic land deals involving Celtic Football Club cost taxpayers £280,000, it has emerged.

It is understood the hours spent responding to queries from the European Commission and dealing with Freedom Of Information requests from the public following the accusations have left Scotland’s largest local authority with the deficit.

Council officials were also required to travel to Brussels on more than one occasion – funded from the public purse – as part of preliminary inquiries into claims Celtic benefited from ‘state aid’.

The Commission did not take the complaint as far as opening a formal investigation.

It comes as the authority is facing cuts and savings of as much as £150 million in the next three years, with the impact falling on frontline services and jobs.

The figure spent by the authority on dealing with the allegations is the equivalent to 10 classroom teachers.

Lawyers close to the case have also said the only substantial grounds to appeal against the Commission’s decision are if a ‘competitor’ of Celtic’s asks Europe for the case to be re-opened.

Essentially this amounts to another Scottish football club, none of whom were involved in the 11-month inquiries ahead of last week’s decision by the European Commission not to proceed any further with the allegations.

One prominent member of Ukip in Scotland has spoken of a potential appeal via social media sites.

One source said: “No clubs made any attempt to get involved in the case and there no reports any did.

“It is highly unlikely any would because they may not want to attract attention to anything that may be perceived as assistance they may have received from local authorities or other public bodies over the years.”

The complaints focused on a series of land purchases around the city’s east end by Celtic from the council, primarily during the last decade, with the accusation the club secured the plots at a knockdown rate.

Last year, the council agreed to sell land valued at more than £750,000 to Celtic.

The claim was this put Celtic at a competitive advantage over other clubs.

A council spokesman said, “We are pleased the Commission has found in our favour following its consideration of the claims of state aid. We will make no further comment.”

I am aware of some employees at Celtic Park who have attempted to join trade unions.

Celtic plc does not recognise trade unions.

So there is an appetite among some workers to improve their working conditions/ pay through trade union membership.

As for what proportion of the total workforce feel this way- you would have to ask them yourself.
