Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

Macjay, sometimes I enjoy your posts, but you have a great way of making a complete dick of yourself and you’ve managed it with some style today.

10/10 for agitation and attention seeking.

  4. Those Sevconian chaps are really a despicable bunch.

Not only have they and their former club bumped us tax payers for £millions they have to wage another attack on the public purse costing Glasgow City Council £280000.

The costs of this unwarranted and malicious ‘ state aid’ campaign are yet again being funded by Celtic supporters and other innocent tax payers .

These people should not be allowed to have a football club under any guise.

    Macjay,

    The question.

Have the employees of Celtic F.C. requested external intervention into their conditions of employment?

    ……..

Nobody has personally approached me requesting my intervention.

    Some good points there.

    In response…….

Charitable motives are always to be commended.

Africa,Far East and Beveridge………..Those situations should be compared to the working conditions of employees of Celtic C.F.C.

    Really?

You see,my opinion is that this is simply the latest manufactured issue for the Celtic Trust.

Another cause celebre to fire up decent Celtic supporters.

    What is the motivation?

Have the employees of Celtic gone on strike?

Have they complained about their wages?

What an extraordinary intrusion into the rights of working people.

    The upshot.

    Redundancies?

    Natural “wastage”?

A halt to taking on new employees.

    Who cares?

    Not the Celtic Trust.

  13. How many of these guid fholk who did the right thing by signing the petition will, continue to do the ‘wrong’ thing by carrying-on with their sheep performances and financially backing a kow-towing ‘bored’ of directors who sold them out behind their backs with their participated rubber-stamping of the OBA thingy?

As for the AGM – guid, well meaning Celtic supporters(my family included – except me) bought shares from Fergus to help build the stadium and didny look for anything in return apart fom some renewed hope in their hearts. Now what, 20 years down the road, guess what?

Despite the promises from Mr McCann that he’d sell back his shares ‘to you’ for less than he bought them to ensure that no individual or family will control Celtic ‘ever’ again…how did ‘you’ let that one slip past?

As I’m fed-up telling ‘you’…the ‘bored’ view ‘you’ as sheep – toothless sheep not the best fans in the world.

There are thousands of grand ole fholk amongst the Celtic fan-base but, ‘you’ are viewed by the kow-towing ‘bored’ and their, hun-establishment bedfellows as sheep – nothing more.

Btw…I hope Lustig is one of the players to be moved on in the next window. Players who are always injured are just that – always injured.

All of the above is – imho

    Off oot, bye.

  18. An tearmann,

Lustig came off at halftime for Sweden with hamstring injury. Can’t see him making it.

Kayal injured in development game. I don’t know how serious it is.

Broony suspended. Other than those 3 we hopefully have no others missing.

    Uber briefly.

I’m not having a dig at how far you away you are from Celtic Park. But please be assured that many people in work are struggling to make ends meet, often with several jobs, zero hours contracts and wages carefully set to be legal. Just.

Many people in situations like that will take on weekend roles, like those at CP.

We as a club could help – if only a little – for the projected sum of £600k pa. That’s a medium investment to achieve something I believe should be at the core of our Club’s values. It would be open ended but not unduly onerous.

As for Fenian agent provocateurs. Here I do believe that distance denies you perspective. I’m usually on the front pew of the happy clapper choir. I have no involvement and marginal interest in the Celtic Trust et al. and/but I signed in a heartbeat. So too did any others though I can’t provide the actual %!

  24. Kayal injured? Hadn’t heard that. So with Scott Brown presumably suspended who comes into midfield alongside Mulgrew?

I guess the options are to move Johanssen back (is Kris Commons fit to take the more forward role?) or to bring in Biton or Henderson?

  25. Macjay

No, I’m not aware of any employee actively seeking (in public anyway) ‘intrusion’ into their employment conditions.

Does that make me and others wrong because we attempt to have those employees paid a living wage?

Does it make the thousands who’ve signed the petition in support of a living wage wrong also?

Do you think Celtic should sign up to be a LW employer?

  26. Geodie Munro

Cheers for that, didnt realise kayal was hurt.

Take it that will be a change in midfield.commons or henderson.

Sad Lustig is out, maybe Darnell fisher could come in.

KING wants to claw back the £20m he invested in Rangers in 2000 on the basis of non-disclosure of the club’s true financial position – but Murray says the former director had every opportunity to question the finances.

  28. Gordon j,

I heard he came off injured in reserve game. Dunno severity.

I’m assuming Bitton will slot in. I’d like to see Efe play there or (what others have suggested) Efe at CH and deneyer in the broony role.

But I’m thinking with Efe playing last night, to do the suggested formation would see O’connell play at CH

  32. the glorious balance sheet on

    Macjay 1002-

The income deficits arising from losing 17000 season ticket holders in the space of 5 years and failure to qualify for the CL and receive the consequent £20 million income represent a larger funding shortfall than the costs associated with adopting the Living Wage.

In my view loss of revenue due to falling attendances and poorer results on the park are a greater threat to the retention of jobs at Celtic than the adoption of the living wage.

    Just my view.
