Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

  2. The big point is that the Board are presently unable to grant a charge over Murray Park. Is that because the ownership is under dispute. The only thing they have ever granted a charge over is Edmiston House & Albion Car Park which Charlie bought out of Share Issue. Ashley is in for 3 million about the worth of the Car Park.

  3. Lets see Celtic jettisoning their best players/managers/staff to maintain exec bonus level to the detriment of the club or who owns rangers car park? whit tae discuss? Aye!

Just read back, that was brilliant, I felt as if I was there.

That said I do believe that you can support independence yet believe the OBB is a ludicrous piece of legislation. As others have said I saw independence as a step which would lead to a new chapter in scottish politics.

Geordie, If we are the only Scottish club playing in Europe, we should be able to play our Europa League games on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Legia played one of their Europa League games recently on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

When we played the Georgian team away in the 1995 Cup Winners Cup, we won 3 2, on a Thursday, we played the Mothers the following Saturday and drew 1 each. We started brilliantly then all the exertions of the Thursday game and travel caught up and we didn’t play withthe same energy in the second half.

What a poor article, do you really think this was aimed just at Celtic supporters? honestly ?

Yes this was a poor piece of law making and needs to be visited again but the lets get Celtic idea that you seem to want to peddle is just nonsense, it would seem that you have your own party politics agenda that you want to follow.

The Scottish government had to do something and I agree wholehearted that this act is not right for anyone but what was the price of doing nothing? Its all very well for us to second guess now but we don’t have the pressure of government to contend with.

I nether have the time or knowledge to go into this issue in any depth infact this is the first time I have posted in about 3 years I hardly even get time to lurk anymore.

The article is at least as selective as those you are commenting on, I see in the papers that Jim Murphy has picked this issue to campain on hmmm I wonder why when the labour party had a hand in its creation this is a man that pocketed more in expenses last year than I can make in 6 years and is currently being investigated for alleged over payment of expenses.

The labour party has betrayed the working people of Scotland they have stood shoulder to shoulder with the torys and I for one will never forgive them for that, EVER !

I’d rather support a government that I believe will fight the corner for every Scottish person even if they get it wrong form time to time.

I reckon you should stick to fitba and putting the boot in to the dead team but it doesn’t matter to me as I’ll find another way to get my Celtic news/info.

  16. So when they were alive and cheating to their 9 this is worse? Bad as the SFA are they were a lot worse, trust me, football is rancid, but things were so much worse with Chunts like Swan, Ferry, Peat…Nah, nah, the Huns are dead, gone and humiliated.

Celtic’s stance is shameful. I live in hope though.

On the park things are not so bad, relatively, I mean.

Looking at that itinerary seems to indicate that the match would have been in MG as they were playing Hohenlimburg next, which is probably on the German/Dutch border. Thanks for the info. Yes, those large German beers don’t half go down well!

Going to every Celtic game anywhere, when Liam and Lou were in charge was a chore compared to what I watch today. Could always be better though. :)
