Outgoing First Minister’s selective criminalisation

757

I’m sure there are people all over England wondering why their manager is apologising for anti-IRA chants by England fans last night.  Someone likely pointed out to Roy Hodgson that his fans were breaking the law in Scotland by doing so, hundreds, if not thousands, could be criminalised this morning.

Their names and addresses are known to the football authorities, the match was televised and the chanting received widespread media coverage.  Police Scotland were all over the ground and had the England fans surrounded.

All this took place in front of the First Minister, whose government decided laws against bigotry and sectarianism left them unable to “equalise” fans of all colours, most of whom never chant bigoted or sectarian words.

Alex Salmond left the stage caring nothing that the police have no interest in applying his law on this occasion.  It wasn’t designed to criminalise the English, it was to criminalise Celtic fans.  If the Offensive Behaviour Act can be flouted in front of the nation, the police and the First Minister, without censure or action, it is an absurd nonsense.  The SNP government has refused to debate a review into the Act, never mind repeal it.  They are defending the indefensible.

  4. Many times in the past I have advocated, and bored, that Celtic do more for those less fortunate, i.e. the infirmed and the unemployed and their families. Not that they don’t already but I just feel that they could, and should, do more.

I’ve also advocated, especially in times of sponsor unrest – as well as not, that Celtic adopt a charity on an annual basis and – gratis – wear that charity’s logo, prominent, on the strip. Not to be like Barcelona or Aston Villa but rather to celebrate the meaning of our existence and to help others who need help. I don’t like the class structure that exists within the stadium and I don’t agree with the ‘privileged’ drinking at the game policy that Celtic had previously adopted. (I am aware that that is under review and changing). There is a litany of issues that I feel denudes Celtic of class but I don’t want to list them here though I continue to feel strongly about them.

I gave up my season ticket for many reasons but two in particular; I could no longer reconcile with myself Celtic’s moot endorsement of the five-way-agreement and the consequential corruption of the sport, and their refusal to adopt the living wage. When I stopped and thought about it, it was a very easy decision to make.

Does my action constitute conditional support… of course it does, but before you condemn, take a peek in the mirror and then read Celtic’s mission statement, the charter. morals, ethics, charity, all inclusive, integrity, honesty, compassion, aspirations, education, etc. etc. (okay, so I added a word or two) Well for me, morals, ethics, charity, all inclusive, integrity, honesty, compassion, aspirations, education, all proud and profound words, they are conceived in individual hearts and souls, then grow at home, in church, and in school, and eventually, collectively, regardless of path, manifest as an indelibly ingrained culture at our core.In Celtic it fathers an ethos of looking after our own, giving them the tools, the culture, the courage, and the spirit, to do what best they can for themselves and by extension, with a mind, and encouragement, others.

    And don’t think I forgot equality….

I don’t want to rabble on, I’m only qualified to suggest anything because I’m a simple Celtic Supporter, but if Celtic adopted half of what I had suggested I don’t think – all things considered – it would cost them a single penny, not one; if anything they’d maybe have profited from it though that was never in my thoughts.

One thing I once asked myself:

If Celtic had behaved like Rangers had behaved… at what point would I have walked away – at what point would I have said “I no longer feel comfortable in my heart with this”?

Now I’m not advocating anybody follow my stance, nor am I in any way comparing the conduct of Celtic with that of Rangers, I’m just saying that I don’t feel the club is any longer representative of the club and culture I once adored. But then was the club ever the beautiful entity I loved to dream… or was it just a naïve schoolboy fantasy that I carried into adulthood because I dared not let it go. Was the club ever what I imagined it to be… or was it just a mythical illusion cultivated by magical moments like ‘getting Martin home’ and the 125 tifo and tandem charity collections. I think it was just a dream and if it was just an illusion… who alone can sprinkle the magical stardust to make it real?

    You can… only you can.

    Borrowed from the Charter

The supporters, the Club and its owners have high expectations for the team on the field and a high regard for the fans.

The management and employees of the Club aim to provide the best quality service to the fans and aim to live up to their expectations for success for the Club. The Club should continue to improve the service it provides to its customers.

Celtic will continue to listen to and respect the advice and opinions of its supporters and endeavour to consult and communicate with the fans.

The fans play a vital part in ensuring the success of Celtic Football Club. The fans inspire the team and contribute to the Celtic spirit.

The Celtic spirit among the fans means devoted encouragement and faithful support for the team. Celtic fans know the history of the Club and are committed to the ideals associated with the founding of the Club.

This King £20m investment nonsense is the same as the Murray investment nonsense that they all love to believe. Murray’s money went only one way – out.

King’s went in and came back out in less than a year, minus the cut for washing it.

    Obfuscation rules.

Why can`t anyone answer the question?

Have the employees of Celtic F.C. requested external intervention into their conditions of employment?

Are there no unionists here able and willing to protect Celtic employees from unsolicited interference into their pay and conditions?

Rhetorical question now, because the deafening silence speaks volumes.

  12. Any Club could sign Guidetti on a Bosman at Christmas as he will be a free agent but he would be our player for the year. Why would any Club pay 5 million to City, unless Man City have a clause to break his loan deal. Having said that I could well understand that Ronny would not want to piss off City as he seems to be well regarded there.

  13. Saint Stivs, I think kitalba knows him, I’ve seen him posting about sending him books. He (macjay that is) has been on my scroll on by list for many months.

BBC Study finds Scottish Premiership ‘half Scottish’

Scottish players have seen a fall in the number of minutes on the pitch in the Scottish Premiership this season, according to a BBC Sport study.

From the start of the season until 1 October, domestic players accounted for just 50.78% of Scottish Premiership playing time, State of the Game found.

That is a fall from last season’s figure of 55.66%.

In contrast, English players accounted for 19.18% of minutes compared with 16.62% last term.

State of the Game analysed the total minutes played by each nationality in the Scottish Premiership and English Premier League and Championship to 1 October this season and in 2013-14.

Champions Celtic played nine Scottish players in the period covered by the study, while St Johnstone used a league-high 17. The Perth side were followed by Dundee (16), Hamilton Academical and Partick Thistle.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle used the fewest number of Scottish players (five).

Meanwhile, levels of Welsh and Northern Irish game time in the Scottish Premiership have remained similar to last season. The Welsh went from 1.09% to 0.92% while their Northern Irish counterparts rose from 4.95% to 5.03%.

France and Nigeria have fallen out of the top 10 nations in the Scottish Premiership, with Poland and Germany replacing them.

In England’s Premier League a total of 18 Scottish players were used in the first six matches compared with 15 last term. This made up 4.87% of the Premier League – up from last season’s 3.22%.

That leaves Scotland fourth on the list in the English top flight, behind England, France and Spain. Promoted Burnley and Hull City each used three Scots while Stoke City, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace used two. Scottish players also spent time on the pitch for Manchester United, Aston Villa, Everton and QPR.

Scottish players had more minutes on the pitch in the Premier League than the Republic of Ireland (4.22%), Wales (2.45%) and Northern Ireland (1.53%).

The percentage of minutes played by Scottish players in England’s Championship was almost unchanged, from 9.53% to 9.52%.
