Performing with an edge, naked opportunism

1065

If you were a professional football player, you would love to be in the Celtic dressing room tomorrow evening.  You would have the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself; put in a big, meaningful performance.  Record a bit of history and create a uniquely memorable victory.

There are some players who are fraught with anxiety on such occasions, but there are others who NEED these games, need an edge, to reach their peak.  If we have a team full of the latter, Legia are in for a torrid night.

I’m doing my best to ignore the naked opportunism in our media this week.  There is no point complaining about it, lose heavily and you become vulnerable to those who live to revel in a Celtic defeat.  Don’t lose and you don’t give them (friends and foes alike) a chance.

We’ve been here before.  Artmedia, Braga, Utrecht, Sion (despite the reprieve) and Karagandy all exposed an aching heart.  European football is unforgiving, try to transition and you’ll find someone ready to exploit, but that doesn’t mean you are wrong to transition.

We might talk about this transition more later in the month but we have a game to win first.  Can’t wait.

Check out the fantastic work by the cyclists who are taking part in the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014 on 6 September. You can join them – all you need is a bike. Get involved, you’ll be delighted you did, I promise. Read about it here.

  1. The weather in Edinburgh is absolutely dreadful.

This may be an advantage for those travelling by road this evening because yesterday was by far the busiest of the festival so far going by the roads. It took me almost an hour to get home on the bus.

I hope Celtic can do the business tonight and I am looking forward to the match. I will save any predictions until I see how we line up.

On a side note I watched Hibs last night and Alan Stubbs has done a great job with that side over a short period of time. Played the home team off the park for large portions of the game and played passing football. I wish Stubbs all the best at Easter road. I did tell my Hibs mate at work that a red card, penalty or both should be expected tonight as he left early to head off to the match. Mrs LB was happy with the improvement.

Anyone looking for parking advice this evening let me know and I will post up something before lunch.

Come on Celtic give us a spark tonight. This tie needs to still be alive at half time.

  4. Two things…

£8m!!!!!!!! Terrible if true. Celtic should have set a £12m, take it or leave it figure. If we are to continue this buy in, sell on policy and make it work, then it is essential not to be a soft touch…which is how we’re being viewed. Terrible.

Had a great weekend on Barra, Hoops everywhere but the Vatersay Boys were playing at a dance at Northbay on the top of the island, could have got there but wouldn’t have fancied my chances of getting back, particularly as it wish chucking it down and blowing a hooligan on Saturday night. Would love to do the entire trek through the Western Isles some time.

Off oot shortly to get a couple of tickets for the game tonight.

Interesting to note the John Beaton was the referee last night when Hibs had a player sent-off for what commentators thought looked like a yellow card offence. I may be wrong here but was he not also the ref when the Albion Rovers goalie got bundled into the net during the Scottish Cup tie at the Death Star in another world first last season?

If so then I can see a trend developing at the country’s newest club.

  17. Sevco will be assisted all the way through the Championship and watch for them catching us in the Premiership within a year or two.

I have no doubt this will happen. How many times have we been told they are about to die again…yet it never happens.

Celtic don’t seem to be concerned and it would appear we are becoming weaker not stronger. I just don’t get it.

Did he release the book cos, deep down….he knew it wisny the downfall?

    `Sweetie mice` I like that.

Because of the way it always has been in Scotland, I share your worries re Sevco being backed, ie receiving `favours`, all the way to the top.

My hope that they`ll never be a force is based on their either going out of business or taking so long to challenge us that they will have lost so many from their fan base that they, at best, will be fighting for second place. I also see a glimmer of hope that if this new EPL U/21 initiative takes off, then exit from Scotland moves a step closer ….or should that be further? 0:-)

    Correct ….!!!!

  28. I can’t believe the (relatively) paltry sums for which Celtic allow their star players to go to the EPL.

Ross McCormack from Championship for £11 MILLION?? Jack Rodwell (who has hardly kicked a ball forever) for £10 million??

We let Ki go too cheap, Hooper too. Forster for £8m? EIGHT?! England World Cup squad member. Young. Champions League player- Champions League performer- a winner. Genuinely, £18m is closer to the mark.

The EPL clubs are awash with cash. They are getting more than ever from the Sky pot. Even the relegated clubs will receive payments far far in excess of the total SPFL and SFL prize fund. Anyone who could run a school tuck shop should return a profit at any EPL club. They literally have more money than sense.

If we have a policy of buying cheap and selling ‘high’ (sic), then at least sell for realistic prices. We know that RD won’t get total sale fees so let’s sell at levels which will provide real options for the first team squad, the most important piece in the PLC jigsaw.

  29. 67Heaven

Surely the spivs will have an even bigger payday when Sevco get back into the land of the living in the top division?

    No sixth sense required. :-)

You can only get for players what people are willing to pay.

Hooper wanted to leave. Ki wanted to leave. Ki wasn’t even a first team regular. I thought Celtic got an excellent deal there.

  34. Big Stubbs says it like it is.

    From The Herald

    http://www.heraldscotland.com/mobile/sport/football/harsh-handling-red-card-deciding-factor-insists-stubbs.24970964

“The sending-off changed the game,” said Stubbs. “We were in the ascendancy at the time and I felt we were going to go on and win the game. I thought it was harsh. More often than not, I think a yellow would be sufficient, but the referee sees it differently.”

Stubbs refused to go into further detail on Beaton’s decision, making a somewhat cryptic comment to the time he spent as a central defender at Celtic.

“I am not going to get into that one,” he said. “I had five years of it.”

Ally McCoist, the Rangers manager, showed little sympathy for Handling. “It was a poor tackle,” said McCoist. “Whether a sending-off or not, the referee was nearer than us.”
