Performing with an edge, naked opportunism

1065

If you were a professional football player, you would love to be in the Celtic dressing room tomorrow evening.  You would have the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself; put in a big, meaningful performance.  Record a bit of history and create a uniquely memorable victory.

There are some players who are fraught with anxiety on such occasions, but there are others who NEED these games, need an edge, to reach their peak.  If we have a team full of the latter, Legia are in for a torrid night.

I’m doing my best to ignore the naked opportunism in our media this week.  There is no point complaining about it, lose heavily and you become vulnerable to those who live to revel in a Celtic defeat.  Don’t lose and you don’t give them (friends and foes alike) a chance.

We’ve been here before.  Artmedia, Braga, Utrecht, Sion (despite the reprieve) and Karagandy all exposed an aching heart.  European football is unforgiving, try to transition and you’ll find someone ready to exploit, but that doesn’t mean you are wrong to transition.

We might talk about this transition more later in the month but we have a game to win first.  Can’t wait.

Check out the fantastic work by the cyclists who are taking part in the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014 on 6 September. You can join them – all you need is a bike. Get involved, you’ll be delighted you did, I promise. Read about it here.

  1. These are the type of quotes that should get our players fired up,they have written us off already selecting their opponents for the next round, from Duda

    ‘St Patrick’s player a lot tougher against us than Celtic,’ he said. ‘They gave us a very tough game in Warsaw.

    ‘With Celtic, we didn’t know what to expect, but we were expected to easily beat the Irish side, which we did, but only after a big fright and a good performance away. Fortunately, we regained our composure and we are now on the right track.

    ‘Of course, we haven’t qualified past Celtic yet, but we have talked about the opponents in the next round.

    ‘Personally, I would like to get BATE Borisov – I think we would have a really good chance against them.’

    dd,

    Barra was great, Hoops everywhere and friendly people all around, a bit like a Celtic utopia. I asked the taxi driver what the cop does, he told me he drives round the island and waves to people, that’s life as it should be. Hopefully the Bhoys can make it a happy place on Wednesday night. Mass in Gaelic for the first time as well.

    Where are u planning to be on Friday night?

  4. f you remove the English army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.

    The day has passed for patching up the capitalist system; it must go. And in the work of abolishing it the Catholic and the Protestant, the Catholic and the Jew, the Catholic and the Freethinker, the Catholic and the Buddhist, the Catholic and the Mahometan will co-operate together, knowing no rivalry but the rivalry of endeavour toward an end beneficial to all. For, as we have said elsewhere, socialism is neither Protestant nor Catholic, Christian nor Freethinker, Buddhist, Mahometan, nor Jew; it is only Human. We of the socialist working class realise that as we suffer together we must work together that we may enjoy together. We reject the firebrand of capitalist warfare and offer you the olive leaf of brotherhood and justice to and for all.

    Labour, Nationality and Religion, in response to Father Robert Kane’s lectures denouncing socialism, Catholicism and Socialism

    Fired up for the game now after reading those quotes attributed to Duda. Breathtaking Souness-esque levels of arrogance.

    Come on Celtic, lets do this! Hit Legia with everything you`ve got and make them sorry they were ever drawn against us.

  7. Saint Stivs,

    The World is totally controlled by a network of Secret Societies, that pays homage Always to Lucifer.

    The Western World is in a lot of trouble, with all the symbolism dominating them subliminally.

    The ramping up of all this is growing exponentially.

    I said it a long time ago, 2012 was the start of a new Golden Age of Paganism – the esoteric know this, the end of the World was for the exoteric, the worthless, in the eyes of those that have really SOLD their souls for power and believed the Lie.

    I got a text from a guy that mean’t me and Aidan could possibly see a new Sporting Lisbon.

    The way things have went for me over the last 2 weeks, I expect to be 2-0 down at half time.

    Shine on.

    Auldheid

    “Nonsense. I’m talking about changing a culture, you are talking about taking physical action.

    Your latter point only confirms my point about the need to become more responsive and encourage a culture that is such..”

    ——-

    Nonsense?

    I posted the other day how PL had given direct instructions not to promote the food drive initiative by the GB either on the official club site or Twitter.

    This was an initiative to help feed the hungry and needy of the Calton area of Glasgow, the area where 126 years ago a football club was founded for the very same reasons.

    Instead of accepting this as a disgrace, an action opposed to the very ethos of our club, you attempted to reason with it by saying that you’d like to hear PL’s reasons for doing this.

    Can you explain this in terms of your charge of going against the ethos of the club in particular regard to food banks?

    http://thegenn.co.uk/celtic-food-bank-donation/

    ====================

    I’m afraid that sometimes the actions of the current board are wrong yet all I ever see is you attempting to find reasons to excuse them.

    In setting out my thinking, which because of my long experience as a manager tends to reflect how businesses think and operate and/or asking questions as above, I am not attempting to find reasons to excuse the current board as you see it (which is your problem not mine) I am simply setting out my perspective based on my experience as you set out yours. I do not doubt the imperfections of Celtic, am not excusing them and am trying in my own way to help address them, but nor am I forgetful again of my experience that when relationships break down (as it appears to have done in the food bank instance you refer to) the fault is invariably of mistakes made on both sides.

    =================

    Celtic suspended 128 supporters within a couple of days of the events at Fir Park. I know of several other cases where supporters have been banned, without any internal club investigation, within days of arrest or eviction from the stadium. These ‘transgressions’ involved singing of ‘illegal’ songs or for for the display of contentious banners, they were not for violence or vandalism.

    That’s the culture which needs addressed.

    ==================================

    And that is exactly what I was meaning about culture change and the slowness of it. You compared my point re slowness of culture change to the speed of response to these events, hence my apples and oranges comment.

    That it takes a while to change the thinking and then implement the processes that result in the correct response is the point I was making and glad to see you agree with me.

    Good luck to the men in hoops tomorrow, and that includes all my friends in Celtic who will be lucky lucky lucky to be at the game at Murrayfield. We might not win a war but we can win a battle and restore the pride we lost last week.

    Ronny and Johnny, have a golden opportunity to re-engage with the support who were so disillusioned last week, don’t blow it.
