Perils of rushing a managerial appointment

787

Getting a managerial appointment right is difficult. A number of things went in our favour when we landed Brendan Rodgers, not least the market for managers in England. The days when a club the size of Liverpool would recruit a manager from Swansea, as they did with Brendan in 2012, are gone.

The era when Arsenal would risk a manager from Grampus Eight, as they did with Wenger, or Manchester United would take someone from Aberdeen, as with Ferguson, even now seem bizarre.

It’s relatively easy to get a short-term boost from a managerial appointment which would take the pressure off board and even players, but football has a habit of bringing reality to the fore quickly. A defeat or two can make years of forward planning difficult to achieve.

I like the strategy of appointing a caretaker if you lose a manager midseason. This buys you time to test the market before appointing an available and familiar name. We have had a few caretakers in our time: Kenny Dalglish won the League Cup, while Frank Connor managed to retire undefeated before handing the reigns to Luigi.

Kenny took over a decent, if poorly managed, squad, while Frank steadied the ship after Liam Brady’s ill-fated tenure ended. Their task was straightforward, get the players pulling in the same direction. If you limit the caretaker’s remit to this, he should do OK.

Had we appointed a permanent replacement in the weeks after John Barnes ‘resigned’ we would have missed out on Martin O’Neill and all that followed. Taking your time can pay.

I’m also open to the idea of a director of football. There is no right or wrong policy on this subject. Changing a manager is the biggest upheaval a club will face (a normal club, anyway). Often the coaches and scouts go too, but if you have a director of football controlling recruitment strategy, for example, you recruit a coach to match the existing strategy. You also don’t need to start scouting players for different roles from scratch.

If we were sitting with a youth coach in charge of the first team right now I’d be doing my best ‘Calm down’ routine. A decision rushed, or worse, a decision made because you are terrified to visit Celtic Park in three weeks, would be the worst of all worlds.  Take your medicine at Celtic Park but get it right for June.

I was on the M8 earlier today and passed a Hungarian truck belonging to a company called Huncargo. I passed it where the M74 joins the M8 , quite apporopriately at the junction for Ibrox.

Good win for the unde 20’s tonight.

Hopefully , the vacant ground beside the Emirates , which has had a sign on it previously , available for leisure and hotel developement , wont be an impediment to our plans. The council may have an interest in developement of the waste land being given priority . I hope this is not the case.

Let’s hope we get planning permission for the hotel , museum and ticket office . It would be a huge boost for the local area and us.

  2. Doirebhoy, The Glasgow Bhoys here will know a lot more than me but I’d be surprised if you couldn’t just drop in to Celtic Shop in Argyle Street & buy 2 tickets for Saturday’s game.

Maybe some wiser head could say yea or nay to that.

    Monaco up 2-1 on Citeh.

I hope Brendan and the bhoys are watching just how fast the monegasques transition from back to front. Defence splitting forward passes to electric pace and deadly finishing.

No wonder they are top scorers in European football – great to watch.

Seems Sutton’s pie-eating keeper had to resign after eating a pasty while on the subs bench during the FA cup game against Arsenal …… (the third sub had been used, so there was no chance he would be called into action).

Apparently, a bookie had put odds on him doing so, and the bookie had to pay out a 5 figure sum after someone made a large wager (rumor is that he had told others that he would do so) ….

Apparently, the FA are investigating due to a possible betting violation ..

I get that they need to protect the integrity of the game… but, surely there are bigger problems to worry about ….

If the South Stand is rebuilt , one of the main issues should be what impact will the higher building cause to the condition of our pitch . If it is rebuilt less sunlight (i know , whit sunlight ) will get to the that side of the pitch. The pitch is not in great nick at all presently and I haven’t a clue why.

Currently the front of the South Stand roof has , I would guess , about 50 feet of perspex along the length of it to help the grass grow .

We do have the lighting rigs which go onto the pitch to help the grass grow and we may have to use these more if the the South Stand increases in height.

  11. I’ve seen Monaco play 4 or 5 times this year, and they have been great. There are so many good young players in French football just now.
