Peterhead 0-3 Celtic

671

The game was only 42 seconds old when Peterhead’s David Ross was sent clean through on Lukasz Zaluska after some excellent approach play but the Celtic keeper was alert enough to collect the ball and prevent the home team’s only chance of the game.  Anthony Stokes scored a hat trick and had a further two goals disallowed for offside as Celtic progressed into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Stokes looked most likely to score from the off.  Samaras fed the Irishman on 14 minutes but his shot was blocked.  Ki then played a forward pass inside the Peterhead right back to the overlapping Cha.  Cha’s cutback found Stokes, who leaned back in the act of shooting and fired over.  Just before the half hour mark Charlie Mulgrew passed a corner on the deck to Ki, who took a touch and shot against the crossbar from the edge of the D.  Keeper Jarvie then saved well from a Mulgrew free kick.

Celtic opened the scoring on 35 minutes with a classic Centenary goal when Paddy McCourt swivelled in the centre of the field before playing a forward ball for Samaras to run onto.  The Greek striker reached the ball inside the 18-yard-box and squared with his first touch to Stokes who knocked the ball into an empty net.

Shortly before half time Samaras carried the ball 80 yards before crossing for Stokes who finished well inside the 6-yard-box but he was flagged for offside.

Stokes second came on 57 minutes when Emilio Izaguirre dribbled into the box before playing a smart 1-2-3 with Stokes, who found what looked like an impossible space inside Jarvie’s right hand post.

Stokes was now on fire and could have added a third a moment later when he controlled a Mulgrew corner inside the ball but pulled his shot wide from 6 yards.  The striker completed his hat trick on 82 minutes a few seconds after substitute Dylan McGeough entered the field and dribbled into the box.  The ball was cleared to Wanyama to pushed it right to Brown who then sent it onto Stokes who made no mistake.

Neil Lennon was talking about McInally earlier in the week, recalling his time coaching the youngsters at Parkhead.

He suggested that he might be brought back in a coaching role some time in the future.

I hope that idea is now right off the agenda ,and I hope he gets some suitably appreciative remarks from his section in the stand next time he tries to use his season ticket…Another Uncle Timmie on the make..

Some total tripe being spouted on here about some guys who wore the Celtic strip with pride and distinction.

One, Davie Provan was awarded a testimonial, scored in a cup-final and was an excellent Celt. The other, Murdo Macleod, a life-long Rangers supporter excelled in games against them.

Shame that they are being labelled with some real bile on here. Achievements in the 78-83 period being rubbished too.

Some on here need to man up a bit

Professional football is not played nor managed by angels

I recall that Paddy Crerand was once sent off playing for MU for lifting a hand to an opponent

The late and much revered Matt Busby admonished him by saying

“Son you can do much more damage with your feet than with your hands”

My older brother tells me than one of the first noticeable differences that Mr Stein brought to the club was that against the huns when we were kicked we now kicked back!

Peterhead were a bit rough but anyone who saw Johnny Doyle make his debut against Dundee would say that Peterhead were positively Corinthian in their approach!

Our current squad lack a couple of guys who are old enough to know the tricks of the trade

Does anyone think wee Bertie would have allowed the number 8 to run around assaulting people without some comeback?

Would the CF have put himself about as he did if big Bobo had been playing?

    I tend to think not

    No-one messed with big Victor

We need a CB with more strength and belief than Wilson who continues to look fragile

We need a physical CF – as that is the way the game is played here

With BK injured we could do with a Paul Scholes type midfielder – you know someone who knows exactly when to leave a foot in!

Mcinally was wrong with his tactics…I would never advocate my kids playing like that but I know how he must have felt…he knows he has nae chance of winning – he has a burning competitive spirit ..he resorts to ‘cripple them’ out of desperation. Completely wrong but I have done it as a player when in games that you know you are going to get completely poned..it’s a desperate measure that leaves you feeling ashamed when reason returns but it is a consequence of wanting to win at all costs…an affliction suffered by most professionals.

Re peterhead and their will to win and lack of quality to do so .

I would understand their approach to not let us settle and give us no time on the ball .

If a peterhaed player was flying in trying to stop a goal scoring chance or breaking up an attack .

How can you explain them kicking celtic players in areas that offered no danger to their goal and at times when such tackles were deemed meaningless .

A cup tie is a cup tie and you expect a bit more dig but peterhead were out of order

Can anyone clarify, how is McGeouch pronounced? Was Ian Crocker correct today on Sky?

  10. Tricoloured Ribbon on

To move on lads and for the brief period he was on,I reckon Dylan McGeouch could have a massive part to play in the remainder of the season.

His quick feet would outwit anyone.

Well said. They were out of order and so was Jim McInally – a guy I like, loved as a player and a true Tim – and who let himself down badly today.

Not sure I have quite the public forum these guys have….

I certainly dont have any impact in airing my views of their historic failures.

These guys currently do impact with their negativity on current momentum of our club….and make money for their undermining our case….

Sorry I am not doing the same thing, and I was in the jungle supporting and followed these guys faithful through and through as the name Burnley 78 suggests…. I only missed 5 games in those 6 seasons and one was in Albania…. i also saw many good young reserves such as mcInally overlooked too.

Just because the Peterhead players put the boot in does not necessarily mean that they were working to managerial instructions.

When I was a player, I remember several players getting together before a few games and talking about getting tore in to the opposition. The manager knew nothing about it. Players are big enough and ugly enough to decide these things by themselves, collectively or individually.

    Ernie,

No Hun has ever, ever said anything about leaving the boot in against Celtic?

We’ll leave it at that for God sake.

TCR,good call mate, you,I and 1000’s like us know they are sent out to boot us off the park..

  16. Dylan McGeouch was one of the highlights today. Quite excellent in his wee cameo, as he was against St Mirren.

    Good luck to him.

You coach kids football eh ? It’s a balancing act, my kids team have just started competitive football after 7’s.

Remember watching a boy, big and tall, he wanted to play “traditional” No. 9, but he couldn’t, not the way the kids are being drilled to play. That comes from the SYFA and SFA.

But this kid’s plight struck a chord, watching him. No one dribbling to deliver a centre, no on hitting the ball early for him to hold. He just can’t be a Messi or Xavi, could be Jordan or Sutton but not without the development.

Of course we all want to play like Barcelona, but hey we ain’t all built for speed, technique and close control. Nor will geography/weather allow us to play silky stuff consistently to make it viable.

I also have no problem praising the more recent triumphs of players who have to contend with significantly more scrutiny and critical aclaim from the new consumers at CP…….
