Phenomenal changes ahead for Celtic Park

915

The news yesterday from Glasgow City Council that Celtic’s planning application for the areas outside the stadium had been approved will do more than deliver shrubbery to a currently derelict landscape; your match day experience is about to be transformed.

Unless your ticket is for the executive lounges, your match day will involve turning up to a cold stadium (not a lot Celtic or the Council can do about the weather) and wait for the game to start, with rudimentary access to toilets (get in early if you want a hand towel), burgers and pies.

Celtic have been buying up land around their perimeter for years and with permission to remove the derelict London Road School, they are now in a position to provide restaurants, bars, pre and post-match entertainment.  They will also be able to bring the many thousands of artefacts which tell the story of Celtic into a dedicated museum space.

Celtic Park will become a working, 7-day-a-week, tourist destination. It’s going to be phenomenal.

Plans have been before the Council for years but although they ticked all the boxes and made enormous economic sense for an area of the city badly in need of a boost, I hear one SNP councillor spoke against plans to move the superstore from its current location to a larger area, as he felt the need to protect the interests of local Asda and Tesco superstores!

Not everyone was happy to see the club, or the area, progress.

The new edition of CQN Magazine is out and packed with great articles for and by the Celtic support.  You can flick through the magazine in the graphic below but it you want to actually read it, click on the double-headed arrow at the bottom right of the graphic.

Always remember being at a game in the Jungle against a SAF Aberdeen side when they were up 3-0 at HT, everyone in CP was shellshocked, an Eric Black hattrick, my, could that guy head a ball.

  6. CaltonTongues, aye, that’s right.

Saint Stivs, colours happened as a result of a minor version upgrade. Still trying to figure out if I can undo it. Green would be OK but red? Still, could be worse. No idea what I’d do if I was stuck with some colours….

tommysbhoy – eh naw, pour yerself a wee half and sit down instead.

CT – I remember GL2 posting on here that we won more titles than Aberdeen in the 80’s. A minor point, eh?!

  8. True to say Aberdeen didn’t have it all their own way until Big Billy left in 1983 but what a career he has had down there.

It’s great he is going out right at the top – 20th United title won. Martin Edwards their chairman in the late ’80’s deserves great credit for sticking with him for so long until the FA Cup was won in 1990.

We’ve some great matches against his sides. My first match at Celtic Park was in March 1981 a 1-1 draw McGarvey and McGhee (I think).

The Eric Black quick fire hattrick was the season later. Nicholas put Celtic 1 up but we were 3-1 behind by HT.

Then against Man United the Nakamura free kick is an all time great memory for all Celts.

    Great memories, a great foe.

Kevtic, aye, remember now, thought Eric Black was a smashing player, as good as the KOK in the air, but obviously not on the deck. Wish we had him as a player instead of an Assistant manager, went to France (Metz I think) got an injury and was never the same player again.

I always thought one of Ferguson’s best signings was Brian Mc Clair..

Under rated by the English press IMO but NEVER by Ferguson.. Mc Clair’s longevity at the club is proof..

TT shame we never got him tho’, SAF benefited – not for the first time – on a good group of young players coming through at the same time. Black, Hewitt, Simpson, Cooper (Neale, yes he was good at the time), & McKimmee with good seasoned pro’s like W.Miller, McGhee and dare I say it, McLeish.

Trying vainly to catch up with the blog. However, I recall vividly the Fergie headbutt incidendent in the ’69 final.

The two players were running on to the ball in midfield, when Fergie made a sideways attempt to headbutt Bobby.

Without breaking stride, Bobby ” rode” the attempt and no whistle was blown.

Bobby won the Player of the year Award that yesr and in his article in The Times, Hugh Mc Ilvanney praised the decision to grant the award to Bobby, not only for his ability, but for the class he showed by not reacting to AF’s attempted assault.

For me, no player, before or since, has commanded a football field than the great Bobby Murdoch of Celtic FC.

    PS.

I latterly had the honour of serving him a pint in the Rolls Royce club in East Kilbride and also saw him and his wife on Main St. Ruglen, just after Lisbon, with his medal?

Believe me, kids, Bobby was the greatest.

With regards to the regeneration of the area within close proximity to Celtic Park that Paul has mentioned could I have your ear for a minute!!

GCC would not have allowed this unless it had substantial benefits for them, and us. The council is under more financial pressure than it has ever known.

Glasgow attracting tourists is a huge source of income.

  22. Anyone else remember Bobby Murdoch scoring against West Germany at Hampden in a World Cup qualifier to make it 1-1 with 2 minutes to play?

He hit it from about 25 yards and it landed in the postage stamp corner.

    A fantastic goal.
