Picked up, shook out, turned into someone new

508

Neil Lennon seemed hurt by the performance yesterday.  “Some of [the players]look like their minds are elsewhere at other clubs.

“I don’t know if they have been tapped up, I don’t know where they are mentally, but you can tell by their body language they are not with us at the minute and I’ll have to sort that out.”

“I have pulled them out of places that no-one had heard of and put them in the shop window.

“And I want payback now. That is simply not good enough.”

Those of you of a certain age might have thought that sounded a bit like:

“You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you.  I picked you out, I shook you up and turned you around, turned you into someone new.”

Of course, that girl from the Human League retorted:

“I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true.  But even then I knew I’d find a much better place, either with or without you.”

As Human League declared in verse, talent will find its level, but only if it performs.  It doesn’t matter where they came from, players who cannot excel in the SPL will drift into relative obscurity on leaving Celtic. There has been no exception to this rule.

  1. Good evening CHAMPIONS

I fully expect to be introducing myself this way for the next 10 seasons, with or without Hooper or Wanyama. See if I’m wrong?

    Alright Bhoys and Ghirls!

Looking for your kind support to help a friend. Kelly has atypical aHUS and is fighting to get the treatment she needs to improve and prolong her life. The Health Minister has rejected pleas to approve funding for a National Specialised Service and the use of the drug Eculizumab for aHUS patients. This drug is a life changer.

Please read and share. Kelly needs our help

Many thanks for taking the time to read this, every share raises awareness and every signature gets Kelly one step closer to a better life.

    Hail Hail!

  3. There was a lot of bottle throwing back then. Unfortunately the receivers. Were not the intended. I would still be pro terracing. Having to sit down freezing for2hours sucks. JUNGLE always.

My first away game (apart from Hampden) was through at Easter Rd too. I can remember going on the Dal (riada) pub bus and gorging on a mince pie supper after the game.

Think it was a draw that day. What I can recall clearly is the cry of HIBEES ! HIBEES ! HIBEES ! and a really loud accompanying thunderclap after each time “HIBEES” was bellowed out from the main stand. I realised sometime after that the thunderclap was feet on the stand’s wooden floor.

Easter Rd was a real dump back then. Anyone else, remember that ragged terracing where the new stand is sited ?

I can still taste that pie-supper, with the exotic east’s salt n’ sauce taste.

Old Easter Rd I recall being at the back of the Celtic end (one behind the goal) and seeing Vic Davidson making his comeback for the hoops, shed loads of tears that day……..in dispair……….

The corollary is also true, though not so easy to say. If you progress as a player in Scotland, there are some rich pickens to be had, south of the border. Stephen Fletcher and Graham Dorrens two good examples, while Maloney and Ki have done quite well this season. Even so, if a player finds it difficult to find consistency playing in the SPL this season, how would he have coped in the ten seasons that preceded this one? After the Aberdeen game there is another International break, after which there is silver to be won. What set apart the Lisbon Lions was not only their ability, but their ability to get to the final of just about every domestic trophy while also competing most years in Europe to 1974. Martin O’Neill’s team, unbeaten in seventy seven SPL matches at home, set the bar high as did Neil Lennon’s twenty plus wins in a row last season. It is not just about winning the league and hopefully the cup, it is how we win them, with a bit of style. We can do it, just can’t do it every week.

Always remember a Hibs v Celtic game in 1973.

    Attendance was just over 48,000.

    Place was heavin’.

Fantastic atmosphere – but a right dump.

Great game as well – we won 4-2. They had a really good team then – they finished 2nd that season when we achieved 9 iar.

He’s a star performer – even when those in his charge are not.

    Respect.

  13. The Carousel Showband played top of the bill at the Hoops 20th Anniversary do in the Normandy Hotel in Renfrew, and played Archbishop Winnings Charity do, every year in a hotel, I cannot for the life of me remember, it was on the Clydeside. We also played many Celtic Supporters Clubs throughout Scotland including Maryhill.

No help from the ref, no sendings off, penalties or any other unfair advantage given to them. Sounds familiar??

Easter rd, the terracing across from the main stand was the biggest i’d seen 1st time i visited. Seem to go on for miles. Not a pleasant place to watch the fitba mind, full of golf umbrellas on a wet day

I maybe getting my wires crossed – there was a showband doing the rounds back then that was made up mainly of brothers with the name of McGee

  24. If Neil Lennon made those remarks about his players,he needs a slap across the back of the heid.

Even if he thought that, he should have kept his mouth shut.

I for one don’t need to know the ins and outs of, what should be dressing room talk.

    Disappointed.
