Picked up, shook out, turned into someone new

508

Neil Lennon seemed hurt by the performance yesterday.  “Some of [the players]look like their minds are elsewhere at other clubs.

“I don’t know if they have been tapped up, I don’t know where they are mentally, but you can tell by their body language they are not with us at the minute and I’ll have to sort that out.”

“I have pulled them out of places that no-one had heard of and put them in the shop window.

“And I want payback now. That is simply not good enough.”

Those of you of a certain age might have thought that sounded a bit like:

“You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you.  I picked you out, I shook you up and turned you around, turned you into someone new.”

Of course, that girl from the Human League retorted:

“I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true.  But even then I knew I’d find a much better place, either with or without you.”

As Human League declared in verse, talent will find its level, but only if it performs.  It doesn’t matter where they came from, players who cannot excel in the SPL will drift into relative obscurity on leaving Celtic. There has been no exception to this rule.

  1. garygillespie I think Tennant was reporting it. Old Johnnie I am sure was the guilty person.

Tennant used to own a pub in Maryhill and was like someone mention early about John Toye known for appearing on TV with a good bevvy in him. Often went straight to studio from his pub. Legend has it in Maryhill he was his own best customer.

It seems we’re getting a post match rant all too often …something must be amiss

  3. Always enjoyed trips to cappielow ,when big Andy Ritchie played for them . Big crowds, good atmosphere and we usually won ,they had a decent team then and I am sure one game was a top of the table clash . Trips to Dundee were good too where the mantra in the car every time we went was, we will need to score three to win up there . yes , we saw many an away defeat in those days and then as now those who didn’t travel moaned most about it

  4. we frathe tim :re maryhill ,stayed in the barracks and used to go to games on the bus

I don’t agree ….I think we have made good signings…however some real duffers have been brought in

Some are not as good as is suggested …others very good …

Lenny has shown some excellent ability at times …naivety at other times…and this constant ranting is tiresome …

  6. It was posted a couple of days ago the average on cqn is between 25-35 not from what I’ve been reading … or are the young tims still suffering from last Night?

Neil is getting these youngsters playing very well against the very best in Europe. He is not doing that bad IMO.

He needs to get an experienced guy or 2 in the team that will sort out the slackers in the team. We can all see the team has excellent potential.

Your dismissal of Roy’s on field leadership skill does him a disservice. He was a superb motivator who could help get the most on the more technically gifted players.

Sadly, the results (especially in Europe) don’t back up the assertion he was a fantastic motivator. I like Roy Aitken, and Anton Rogan – the were players that fans could identify with (unlike the untouchable multi millionaires of today) but that shouldn’t obscure the fact that the players for the most part weren’t terribly good.

Anton is a player who will always hold a special place in my heart – for reasons linked to my late father – but he’s one that should have been nowhere near the Celtic first team.

Read Paul McStay opinion about Roy’s contribution to the team.

I prefer empirical evidence. And the European results at that point were embarrassing. That tells me more than Paul McStay’s recollections. The centernary year was the best illustration of a team being driven on a wave of fan euphoria and desire in my opinion. An example to clubs the world over of what supportive fans can do for a limited team.

First of all I’d agree with your assesments of Peter Grant and Anton Rogan. I also think there have been plenty others who played for us who had little more to offer than a love of the Celts. I’d also suggest Roy Aitken was instrumental in us losing to Forest in Dec 83, the league cup final in March 84 and the Scottish Cup Final of May 84. Not a good season for him. But he was rather more than all heart – hugely instrumental in keeping the team going in the 4-2 game, the 85 Cup Final and 88 semi- final. He wasn’t always my cup of tea as a player but his value to Celtic exceeded by far those other two players as well as several of the same era who are mire fondly remembered.

Sorry, you’re correct. Roy *was* far better than the other players I mentioned. I mentioned those guys to try and illutrate my point rather than to provide a direct comparison. I’ve said it many times before, but my command of the written word knows no beginning. :) Apologies for not making that clearer.

Also, at the time, I thought Roy Aitken and a fair few members of that team were superstars in the making. Sadly, the passing of time has illustrated better their flaws than their strengths.

Still as BFDJ would say It’s all about opinions.

    Absolutely. :)

Spending £8Million on an exceptional player (not the blockbuster leagues) at the age of 28, when you sell a player for £8Million is good business sense.

Celtic have got themselves into a very good position despite all the odds.

We made the last 16 this season. I firmly believe we will make the last 8 next season.

  26. 16 roads – Neil Lennon walks on water…

P8ddy – Anton Rogan had a great left foot.He broke his leg four times during his career. There was never a braver footballer.Sad that he missed that penalty against Aberdeen when we were going for three Scottish Cup wins in a row,he never recovered from that.

I remember Anton fondly. As with a lot of those players. Please don’t mistake my not rating them as players as not liking them. Anton more than others, I liked immensly. If anything I could identify with the honesty he had as a player. He had deficiencies, but he wasn’t ruled by fear. That’s an admirable quality.

Anton made very little money out of football, and he was earning a pittance at Celtic. He loved the green and white.Plus he was the the last player from West Belfast to play for the club, and the first since Charlie Tully.Peter Grant and The Bear were also part of that magnificent Centenary side that won the double, against all the odds,in spite of a hun team that were out spending every other club in Britain.A few very astute signing like Morris and McCarthy,Frankie as well.Plus TB and The Maestro.Legends every one of them.

All of those guys deserve their place in both the history books and our hearts. As I say, I love those guys. At the same time I just don’t rate them as footballers.

Of all them, only McAvennie and McCarthy would get near the current Celtic first team. And McCarthy mainly on goodwill for smashing Crawford Baptie into the next week with as good a punch as you’ll ever see. :)

I tend to agree. He’s developing into a good manager. Certainly I can’t think of many other candidates I’d have rather than Neil.

This being said, our support is impatient and opinions change like the wind. A comfortable win and most will be happy again. Me? I’m already pretty happy with the manager, and it’ll take more than a couple of rubbish results to alter that.
