Pitfalls with Malmo and Vidi but AEK remain major hurdle

468

The incentive for Brendan Rodgers and his players is clear, beat AEK Athens and you will face either Malmo or Vidi (known as Videoton until earlier this year) in the Champions League play-off round.

Malmo, who are 16 games into their league programme, will be slight favourites to make the play-off round.  They beat Romanians Cluj in the last round and Kosovans Drita in the first qualifier.

The Swedes were eliminated from the second qualifying round last year by Vardar of Macedona – a stage which did not offer the compensation of a Europa League entry.

Vidi recorded the result of the last round by eliminating Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 on aggregate.  They overcame Maltese and Estonian opposition a year ago, before recording a remarkable away goals victory over Girondins Bordeaux.  Eventually losing 4-0 on aggregate to Partizan Belgrade.

It all went wrong for Celtic three years ago when former player, Jo Inge Berget returned to haunt us for Malmo.  Berget scored twice in the Champions League play-off first leg at Celtic Park in a 3-2 Celtic win, but the Swedes progressed after winning the return 2-0.

Malmo changed manager in June, appointing Uwe Rosler, who was sacked by Fleetwood Town in February,  Not a conventional route to Champions League glory.

There are pitfalls if we approach the tie as ill-prepared as we were in 2015, or as Bordeaux were last month, but AEK are by far the strongest team we will face in order to reach the group stage.

It’s all about Celtic Park on Wednesday; the hugest or hugest games.

  10. We should wait until we have done our business in the transfer window before getting annoyed about lack of movement. Nobody will be coming into the team straight away, its not BR’s style.

If we have recieved a £9 million bid for boyata we should be taking it and run. His best position is centreback of a back three, prefer ajar in three. Would switch jozo to the right and purchase a new left sided centreback.

Shortbread now saying it would be bad for the national team if McGinn went to Celtic and didn’t play.

Presumably okay if he went to England and didn’t play!

  12. One thing for sure,Sevco are doing everything ,to stop us winning the league this season, they are in the verge of signing a Crotian Left Back for 2 Million,Our Club awash with money no new players coming in, Brendan Rodgers can forget about Quality Players,he is waiting on the Transfer Window in England shutting on Thursday hoping to get a few players in,that there club’s don’t want, you couldn’t make it up.makes you wonder if it’s worth buying a season ticket year in and year out, doing your bit for the club, only for them to do the opposite, but I’m a Celtic fan,so I just keep supporting the club,

Dembele, Ntcham and Sinclair all arrived and had an immediate impact on the team.

He was on 5Live last week. They were asking him about Stoke’s relegation. He has a pop at Shaqiri and Lambert. This the guy who missed a penalty and got sent off in two key games. The five points they lost would have kept them up.

Don’t know what they all see in the guy.

Dembele only got in because the griff got injuried and ncham was brought in gradually after a slow start. Your may be correct about Sinclair but then Sinclair know exactly how br wasntwd team to play, more so then the players left by ronny

  17. if the croat signs for them i think we have missed a good un . only saw him play the twice against them but he stood out a mile and better than anything currently playing left side in SPL , us apart.

The lack of self awareness among their community is astonishing, they’re incapable to a man of sticking their hand up to anything, it’s always someones else fault, I would love for him to come back to Poundland to see him blowin’ out his arse after 60 minutes of chasing shadows in our midfield, hun trumpet and boy is he ugly enough to play for them:))

Remember a few years back we were watching Celtic on the box, Europa League I think, and inexplicably, (well maybe not) Charlie Adam was working in the studio, giving opinion at HT/FT. Referred to us the whole time as “they”, could not bring himself to use the word “Celtic”. A bigot of the lowest order, by any standard.

Both Ntcham and Dembele played big parts in CL qualification in the year they were signed (both scored). Edouard has had the same effect this year. I just disagree with the premise that Rodgers signings don’t come in to the team and play/have an impact straight away.

  22. It’s the hope that kills them.

A few Huns raging in the work today, in a way that they weren’t when we pumped them 4 and 5 nil.

Timbhoy2…Kenny McIntyre’s dad was a smashing guy. A political commentator who was trusted by all parties because of his honesty, openness and great sense of humour. Also, he loved his football and played into his fifties….and he never had a good word for the hun…

  24. Thought Michael Stewart conducted himself very well tonight on Shortbread when Kenny Macintyre tried to “ambush” him with the Charlie Adams on the line thing. You could tell he was furious with the sneakiness of it all, there will be pay back for that I reckon worth a listen on the BBC iplayer. Just how thick is C Adam??? H H Hebcelt

By the way, thems lurkers, if all your manger’s got is ‘they’re all against us’ but has nothing to say about footie and tactics and devlopment of the players then all you’re gonna get is ‘they’re all against us’. Just trying to help like, oh and don’t use knives!
