Policing and Celtic

830

I spoke to Celtic today about various questions surrounding stewarding and policing in and around the stadium.

The club would not be specific on any particular incident but I got a run down on various instances (alleged assault, vandalism) when Celtic have responded to police requests for identifying information on fans.  Celtic said the police can only ask for identifying information if they allege a crime has been committed and Celtic’s safety certificate, allowing them to open the stadium, depends on the club complying with police requests if they allege a crime has been committed.

The club were clear that complying with police requests on such instances is not a matter of choice for Celtic, “It happens, it has always happened, and it happens at every other club in the UK”.

I asked if the club target fans and ask the police to arrest them.  I was told this is ludicrous to suggest the police do the bidding of the club (I was also laughed at for making the suggestion).  Celtic can revoke tickets and stadium access without recourse to the police.

My conversation happened before anyone at Celtic heard last night’s podcast from the HomeBhoys but I asked specific questions about the red haired fan discussed who was allegedly brandishing a seat and was told no police request had been received in connection to him and that his details had therefore not been passed to the police.

I understand the club have met with various supporters’ groups and clarified these issues, as well as more general stadium safety matters, and that they will issue a statement later today in response to questions asked by the Celtic Trust, who I believe put many of these points in writing.

After speaking to Celtic I spoke to a police officer who is a regular Match Commander at SPL games (not Celtic games) who confirmed clubs would lose their safety certificate if they failed to cooperate with the police.

Having had the chance to put questions to Celtic I asked them give others the same opportunity and to unconditionally meet with any fans’ group with concerns on any of these matters. They assured me they would.

  1. Nae bother TET.

They’re a good bunch and if you’re transacting yourself give them a look. They left me alone in a room once with about £450,000 in various currencies. It was hard not to look.

That ex-neighbour of mine was about 15,000 euros to the good. Swine didn’t even send me a bottle of anything.

The spread in the banks is up to 14% so the scope for bettering them is enormous. Even more so if you walk in with cash.

However. Paul67 may not want money changers in the temple.

  2. ‘I spoke to Celtic today about various questions surrounding stewarding and policing in and around the stadium.’

I wonder who initiated the conversation.

  3. There is obviously something wrong between the GB and the board (PL) in particular. All I can say is that there will be no winners and only losers in this scenario.

It is such a tragedy that after all our manager has had to put up with he still takes us through the CL group stages and will win his second league title in a row. This is now all going to be tarnished by a small group of fans determination to get the better of the polis and vice versa to make them look stupid. I am in no way condoning the actions of plod against the GB which is a disgrace.

All this carry on with standing up and bating the screws began in section 445 and has continued via the GB in 111.

The first rule in growing up in housing estates in Glasgow was that you will never ever beat the polis. This was the case in my old mans time in the 40’s and 50’s in Dalmarnock and Carntyne and through my time in the 70’s and 80’s in Blackhill.

We can of course on occasions win some little battles by being smarter but will never win the war. The power will always be with them.

As for our own board all I expect of them is to run the club in a proper and viable way at all times and if the story of collusion or scapegoating any of our fans is true then PL’s position is untenable and he should go.

However nothing will stop me being a Celtic fan and giving my hard earned to the club, not the polis, board or the GB. The fact is players, managers and board members come and go while we as fans are the ones who stay.

So for the “I’ll no be back brigade” so be it, I am sure you will not be missed.

    Or

Police – We have arrested Mr (or Mrs) X for vandalism (or any crime) they’re member no is p34873 they sit at 123 Row Z seat 10. We’d like their address.

Celtic must comply and this is covered within the Data Protection Act 1998. That’s assuming Celtic are making the correct checks and balances. As I’ve stated previously I’m not sure they have been, but I’m pretty sure they will be from now on.

  5. weeminger if any such arrest had been made and charge brought I’m sure the Scottish Media would be the first to know. And then to let everyone know.

The police are obliged to check that the arrested person lives at the address he has given. The fact he has given the police and Celtic the same address does not satisfy that check.

But my pojnt is we are being fobbed off.

  6. What! my membership no is p34873 & I sit at 123 Row Z seat 10 – I better go into hiding!!

Well,I always thought that this was the quietest, most pro-board,happy clapping Celtic site of them all.

And all the better for it IMO

I also think that the level of debate on here is quite high.

From reading back,I suggest that the board,PL in particular, have grossly miscalculated

With respect to behind-the-scenes efforts of PAUL67,a proper statement of intent is required from them.

That seems to be the concensus on here, and I doubt that the usual mealy-mouthed platitudes are gonna do…….

Thank you again James an excellent piece on the zoomer in charge of the HATE FACTORY.

  10. It strikes me as strange that Paul says he has asked questions( who decided what ones?)

And we are all supposed to just accept that all is in hand and its rosy in the celtic garden…..excuse my French but that’s just like MSM BOLLOX on Clyde and the Scoddish press

We have a TV. Channel we have the ability to email questions so that the club can address directly to its own supporters with the questions we would like answered

why are we not doing this and instead being fobbed off with ” don’t worry everything is alright” when it quite clearly isn’t and the longer the status quo continues the more disenfranchised people will become

That’s just my humble opinion but I have a strong feeling I’m not alone in this point of view……. Back to you Celtic!!

  11. On 24 April 2003 Celtic played Boavista in Porto in the second leg of the UEFA Cup Semi-Final. The attendance was 11,000. Where you there? If so what was it like when Henrik Larsson scored the goal in the 82 minute that took Celtic to the Final. If you weren’t there, where were you watching the match and describe the celebrations when Henrik scored? This for feature in the magazine so thanks in advance.

  12. Ntassoolla – 14:41 on 26 March, 2013

I just think there are those (and I don’t necessarily put you in this bracket) that believe the club are feeding the information to the police without a request being made.

I think this is highly unlikely but I do believe that there may have been a lack of proper checks being made eg requesting and confirming crime numbers before requested information is handed over.

The people that run the club may misjudge the support but they’re not so stupid they’d alienate them entirely. It would hit the bottom line too hard.

Whenever I consider the club’s actions I always imagine the impact on money coming in. I generally find that the club do what affects that least.

  13. If the Celtic heirarchy have no issue with the GB or those who are seated in section 111 then why was there the delay in allowing these people to renew their season tickets in the last two seasons?

Why was there suggestions from within the club that the ‘section’ would be disbanded?

    6. A single standard information sharing protocol is adopted between all SFA member clubs and the local police commanders to include effective two-way communication in time for the commencement of the 2011/12 season.

  15. Spot the difference ; a small group of Dunfermline supporter decide to meet up at a pub in the town centre on a Saturday afternoon. They assemble outside the pub and walk to their football stadium. There is nary a policeman to be seen and the event passes off without incident.

A week earlier a small group of Celtic supporters meet up at a town centre pub. They assemble outside the pub where they plan to set off for their football stadium. Around 200 policemen descend on the group along with around a dozen riot vans, helicopters, And many police cars.

The police decide that a tactic used for full scale rioting is deemed necessary and chaos ensues. Many arrests are made and the event makes headlines in many newspapers. Criticism of the heavy handed tactics, and cost of the operation are made. Both gatherings are hastily arranged events due to “feelings running high”. An excuse used for police non – intervention in similar gatherings which had recently taken place by fans of “another” glasgow team.

All these conspiracy questions, that’s what international weeks do for you, we can’t talk about the blunders or the heroics of the players so its conspiracies instead, does my head in, we need to be back playing twice a week, that would kill the whole thing stone dead imo.,

Ernie, you had your chance but bottled it.

  19. The truth is that Celtic want the GB in attendance but only on the club’s terms. It is up to members of the GB to decide if this situation is acceptable to them.

If it is not then they should simply walk away.

After all, why spend money where you are not welcome.

Just listened to the Home Bhoys podcast and they guy Stevie certainly comes across as very genuine, after all, he has nothing to gain by publicly criticizing the club.

Still beggars belief that a small group of Celtic fans were kettled by riot police and the helicopter brought out.

This scale of operation was obviously pre-planned…where did Strathclyde get their info from?

Yip i was there. Right in line with the penalty spot when Henrik managed to scoop his shot goalwards. We thought the goalie had done enough to put it past the post and they were the longest 6 seconds of my life until the ball had rolled slowly over the line.

Cue absolute bedlam. The following 10 mins seemed like a lifetime but in all honesty Boavista were never going to score. Out of our group of circa ten people, there wasn’t one of us who didn’t have tears welling in their eyes at the final whistle. One or 2 of the bhoys were physically sick outside the ground after the game, such had been the stress of those last 10mins or so, and the knowledge that Celtic had reached another European final and we would all be there this time.

    Wonderful memories indeed.

  25. It seems to me,that PL is intent to do anything to get rid of the GB,but will not do anything about CG of Sevco dragging our club down to the level of the Conference League.
