Politics of the game encroaching on Neil Lennon

847

It is one thing for football fans and administrators to be embroiled in the politics of the game but it’s no wonder that Neil Lennon tires of such subjects.  His team are top of the SPL and in the knockout stages of the Champions League but he is being distracted by references to his club emanating from the lower leagues.  Maybe he should limit his comments on this subject to those of Walter Smith, “We wish the new Rangers Football Club every good fortune.”  Every “new” club deserves the same courtesy.

Can you imagine the reaction if Neil said the same!

Speaking of which, I see the man who has avoided trying to win friends among other clubs since his arrival in the game last year is now trying to influence people on league reconstruction.  Good luck with that.

We spoke over the weekend about well-run clubs in the SPL (Inverness, St Johnstone, Ross County, Motherwell), where managers come and go but results tend to remain buoyant.  Notably absent from this list was Dundee United, who have underachieved for years, but whose manager, Peter Houston, was today given permission to speak to English Championship side, Blackpool.  Houston has been unable to sprinkle magic dust over Tannadice so, if offered the Blackpool job, I expect him to accept.

United need to ask some fundamental questions should they be forced to replace their manager, like why they have vastly more resources than Motherwell, and appear to be able to produce prodigious young talent, but consistently fail to match the Lanarkshire side the in the league table.  They are a club in need of vision.

    Congratulations to WGS.

    Just read about George Hazlett. I hadn’t heard of him before. But, I’ll never forget him now. He was born on the same day as my Dad. I must tell him, although I suspect that my Dad was still a member of the forces serving out in the Far East when Hazlett was wearing the hoops; so, my Dad probably never saw him play.

  5. Not of great interest to me (and possibly many others on here) but here it is anyway (:

    “Gordon Strachan has agreed to become the new manager of Scotland, BBC Scotland has learned.

    The former Celtic and Middlesbrough manager could be confirmed by the Scottish Football Association as early as Tuesday afternoon.

    His appointment follows the sacking of Craig Levein in November, which followed a run of poor results.

    Capped 50 times, Strachan featured in Scotland’s 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals campaigns.

    The 55-year-old has been out of management since leaving Boro in October 2010.

    After playing spells at Dundee, Aberdeen, Manchester United, Leeds United and Coventry City, the winger moved into management with the Sky Blues in November 1996.

    After keeping Coventry in the Premier League for several seasons, they suffered relegation at the end of season 2000-01 and Strachan departed a few games into the following season.

    He returned to the dugout when Southampton brought him in to replace Stuart Gray and the appointment helped Saints stave off relegation before they reached the FA Cup final in 2003.

    But Strachan left the club the following year and took a break from football.

    His move to Celtic in June 2005 followed Martin O’Neill’s decision to leave Glasgow.

    Strachan recovered from a 5-0 Champions League qualifying defeat by Artmedia Bratislava in his opening match – a tie that finished 5-4 on aggregate – to win the Scottish Premier League title three years in succession.

    He also led the side to two appearances in the last 16 of the Champions League, the club never having reached the knock-out stages prior to Strachan’s arrival.

    However, Rangers won the SPL in 2009 and Strachan left Glasgow shortly after.

    A year in charge of Boro followed but, after missing out on promotion in 2010, a poor start to the season led to Strachan leaving the club by mutual consent.

    Levein’s three-year spell in charge of Scotland came to an end after a poor start to the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

    Having missed out on qualification to Euro 2012, the Scots began their pursuit of a place in next year’s finals Brazil with successive home draws against Serbia and Macedonia.

    Scotland then lost from a winning position against Wales before defeat in Belgium consigned Levein’s side to the bottom of their group.

    After Levein was sacked, Scotland Under-21 coach Billy Stark was placed in caretaker charge of the senior team for the friendly win in Luxembourg.

    Strachan’s first match in charge will be the February friendly against Estonia at Pittodrie Stadium, the venue where he enjoyed success as an Aberdeen player.”

  16. GG your post shames me but I did live and not work in the uk in the Thatcher years and I can’t bring myself to not hate her. Life before and after the witch was drastically different. We hope that our political and economical leaders at least have a desire to improve the big picture not create the big issue and the real social suffering she engineered. I need to deal with my own devils but I am damn sure that she will meet hers.

  17. Forgot to say well done WGS . Take Scotland back to the big time. Last sixteen of the big comps twice in a row will do nicely. Hail Hail Gordon Strachan

    I detest all that she stood for, the communities here that suffered through her mantra of no such thing as society………glad Celtic as a club and through its support regularly demonstrate the opposite

    Regan and Thatcher started the economic folly of deregulation in the financial sector which has resulted in western banks going bankrupt

    No tolerance of other viewpoints even within her own cabinet, a cold narrow minded mean spirited woman who left a lot of lives ruined in the world

  20. Not very often I wish best of luck to a Scotland manager,because it is usually a

    hun yes man,but I hope wee Gordon does the bizz.

  21. I am at a bit of a loss here as to why GG`s post is receiving such wide praise.

    In his post he tells us that:

    1) He was not in the UK during the Thatcher years;

    2)He infers that the Unions `chocked` the economy;

    3)He sees Communism (bad) and Catholicism (good) as diametrically opposed;

    4)He suggests `hate` is wrong but he hates what she did (in Scotland);

    5)He says extreme is bad but centre is good. (That sentiment has been expressed on a regular basis by the MSM every time working people fight for their rights);

    6)He suggests that the indoctrinated hate of those in Northern Ireland is no different from that felt by many who suffered (and died) because of Thatcher`s actions.

    7)Finally, GG makes it clear that he hates what she did and shows no tollerance of the Unions or of Communism but he is lauded as providing the human touch on CQN?

    My confusion remains (but I don`t. I am off to the gym. Too icy to train for the wee Oscar Bike Ride).

    I will confirm in a wee minute, but I’m pretty sure the Irish-themed brass combo thing Rob Cowan is playing at the moment on Radio 3 just took us through The Holy Ground.

    Fine Girl Ye Are.

    That’ll be Radio 3 on the FF list, Last Night of the Proms or no Last Night of the Proms.

  23. Good luck to the wee mhan in his new, and exceptionally difficult, gig. The only worthy Scottish candidate, I’d have thought, but it’s still a shock that they are picking him.

    The one that is slightly reminiscent of The Holy Ground is called Swansea Town, and I’m prepared to stand corrected, but I am harbouring suspicions that it may not be Irish at all.

    Holding onto Hooper gives us a good chance,IMO,of progressing,with another £6m to be picked up as a result-a lot more than we would be likely to lose on his fee in the summer.

    Or,of course,we could show we value him by offering nearer to his worth.

    ‘The Holy Ground

    Originally a Welsh song by the name of The Lass of Swansea Town or Old Swansea Town Once More, this has been adapted as an Irish song with very similar lyrics. The tune is also known as The Cobh Sea Shanty and was originally a capstan shanty – a song sung as sailors turned the capstan to raise the anchor. It was popular on the docks of Cork and Cobh as well as on the ships.

    The Holy Ground was a rather squalid part of Cobh once known as Queenstown, which was popular with the fisherman and waterfront workers, as there were many taverns and brothels.’
