Politics of the game encroaching on Neil Lennon

847

It is one thing for football fans and administrators to be embroiled in the politics of the game but it’s no wonder that Neil Lennon tires of such subjects.  His team are top of the SPL and in the knockout stages of the Champions League but he is being distracted by references to his club emanating from the lower leagues.  Maybe he should limit his comments on this subject to those of Walter Smith, “We wish the new Rangers Football Club every good fortune.”  Every “new” club deserves the same courtesy.

Can you imagine the reaction if Neil said the same!

Speaking of which, I see the man who has avoided trying to win friends among other clubs since his arrival in the game last year is now trying to influence people on league reconstruction.  Good luck with that.

We spoke over the weekend about well-run clubs in the SPL (Inverness, St Johnstone, Ross County, Motherwell), where managers come and go but results tend to remain buoyant.  Notably absent from this list was Dundee United, who have underachieved for years, but whose manager, Peter Houston, was today given permission to speak to English Championship side, Blackpool.  Houston has been unable to sprinkle magic dust over Tannadice so, if offered the Blackpool job, I expect him to accept.

United need to ask some fundamental questions should they be forced to replace their manager, like why they have vastly more resources than Motherwell, and appear to be able to produce prodigious young talent, but consistently fail to match the Lanarkshire side the in the league table.  They are a club in need of vision.

Yes, I recall that too. It was a different guy, an older player, José Ufarte. He did play for Atlético Madrid in 1974. He played against us, but only in the second leg.

He also took part in both games against Bayern Munich in the final.

  3. What are we apologising for? Seems to be the Celtic way now. Apologise then find out why we are actually doing it.

Celtic have apologised to Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest after teenage striker Tony Watt said he knew nothing about the former European champions apart from their name.

Ahead of a friendly match between the teams on Tuesday, 19-year-old Watt spoke to Romanian television channel Dolce Sport.

However the rising star of Celtic Park and the Scotland Under-21 national team caused a bit of a furore with his lack of knowledge of the opponents.

Asked by the Romanian reporter if he thought it was an honour for Steaua to face Celtic, he said: “They are playing against one of the biggest clubs in the world and we’ve proved it by getting to the last 16 of the Champions League.”

Watt was then asked about his knowledge of the 1986 European Cup winners but admitted he knew little about the 23-times Romanian champions, or the game in the country.

He said: “I know the name and that’s about it. I know they’re a big European club and they have good history.

“Obviously everyone knows who Steaua Bucharest are.

“I think Mutu might be a Romanian, that’s about all I know about Romanian football.”

Despite the seemingly innocuous comments the reaction from the Steaua camp saw Celtic quickly make an apology.

A spokesman for the Glasgow club said: “We apologise and regret Tony Watt’s statements about Steaua.

“Our club does not agree with such statements made against other teams.”

Wonder how many will be moaning about his lack of respect for the supporters when he’s having a go at a hack this time.

would you say this describes her during her time in office.

Level 4: Self-sufficiency, financial independence, and having enough resources are important concerns: become enterprising, pragmatic, “rugged individualists,” wheeler-dealers. Risk-taking, hardworking, denying own emotional needs.

Level 5: Begin to dominate their environment, including others: want to feel that others are behind them, supporting their efforts. Swaggering, boastful, forceful, and expansive: the “boss” whose word is law. Proud, egocentric, want to impose their will and vision on everything, not seeing others as equals or treating them with respect.

Level 6: Become highly combative and intimidating to get their way: confrontational, belligerent, creating adversarial relationships. Everything a test of wills, and they will not back down. Use threats and reprisals to get obedience from others, to keep others off balance and insecure. However, unjust treatment makes others fear and resent them, possibly also band together against them.

    Unhealthy Levels

Level 7: Defying any attempt to control them, become completely ruthless, dictatorial, “might makes right.” The criminal and outlaw, renegade, and con-artist. Hard-hearted, immoral and potentially violent.

Level 8: Develop delusional ideas about their power, invincibility, and ability to prevail: megalomania, feeling omnipotent, invulnerable. Recklessly over-extending self.

Level 9: If they get in danger, they may brutally destroy everything that has not conformed to their will rather than surrender to anyone else. Vengeful, barbaric, murderous. Sociopathic tendencies. Generally corresponds to the Antisocial Personality Disorder.

We do, as a club, seem intent on not offending anyone.

I’d be more worried how Watt feels after the club felt he had offended another club.

Young Watts comment are innocuous it’s seems to me.

I doubt Steaua would be offended by a young player not knowing their history.

  7. Auldheid Hi, please can you point me in the direction of the post you made a few days ago talking about Peter Lawwell playing the long game with this league re-con so that when we leave Scottish football it will be on amicable terms. Was it this one? It is the closest to your description that I can remember.

This is interesting and suggests Celtic have been on the ball for a good few months if not longer.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/celtic/9791057/Celtic-reveal-costs-of-reconstruction-after-unveiling-three-year-shirt-sponsorship-deal-with-Magners.html

The greatest risk to Celtic’s ongoing welfare is not falling crowds but not having a league to play in. That has been a fear at Celtic for some time and this was an opportunity to do something about it.

Whilst not guaranteed CL money, the prospect of earning it for the foreseeable future with an under control wage bill, means that the sums surrendered to enable reconstruction are in fact worth it in straight business terms – the sums surrendered pay for the means to get at the big money.

The next greatest threat to CL cash access has now been removed from the scene for at least 4 years, so why on earth would Celtic want to see them given a lift up?

Unless the handshake mob pull of a remarkable coup, Celtic have set the foreseeable future for themselves and Scottish football and it is a more sustainable one than that left behind.

JT’s diatribe at Celtic and us bampots is caused in part at being outsmarted. His plan was always to aid a swift recovery to his club even as a journo, they all confidently, smugly, predicted a swift recovery and but for supporter resistance to defend the game’s integrity, they would have been right.

When Traynor rails against sporting integrity, Celtic and the bampots, he has every reason to be upset because of thwarted plans.

If I remember correctly the 1986 final wasn’t great, it also happened before he was born.

I don’t think he said anything offensive, he just lacked a bit of knowledge and tried to be diplomatic, like a 19year old. I hope it doesn’t affect how he feels about the club.

It was basically saying that Peter Lawwell is being very clever in what he is doing as Scottish football would be stable and we would be allowed to leave on amicable terms with a kickback of money to Scottish football from the riches we would earn in a European league. Do you know what day/article you originally posted the above? Thanks again.

    Security Alert – Mal/JavaJar-B

    Threat Alert—Jan. 14, 2013

As a valued iS3 customer, we are notifying you of a major internet security threat that a new Trojan horse called Mal/JavaJar-B has been found that exploits a vulnerability in Oracle’s Java 7 and affects even the latest version of the runtime (7u10). The malware has currently been seen attacking Windows, Linux and Unix systems.

The Department of Homeland Security said attackers could trick targets into visiting malicious websites that would infect their PCs with software capable of exploiting the bug in Java. An attacker could also infect a legitimate website by uploading malicious software that would infect machines of computer users who trust that site because they have previously visited it without experiencing any problems.

Developers of several popular hacker tools, known as exploit kits, used to attack PCs, have added software that allows hackers to exploit the newly discovered bug in Java to attack computers.

Users can immediately protect themselves in the following ways:

    • STOPzilla users will be delivered a patch today which prevents the infection as part of their

    normal update service.

    • By disabling Java content in their browser

    • Downloading the latest version of Java: http://java.com/en/download/java_update.jsp

To disable Java in your browser Go to the Java Control Panel that is installed along with the runtime, and in the Security section uncheck the option to “Enable Java content in the browser,” which will disable the browser plug-in.

Read more about the threat and Oracle’s fix at Foxnews.com or at CNN.com.

  23. Celtic should have got Thomas Rogne to do the interview with the Romanians. He’s the only player we have who can speak proper English.

  24. Anyone pick this up?

    http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/369986

The bad news is this bit as it stops BT Vision stepping in.

If ESPN do decide to pull out then Sky would have first option to buy up their package, allowing them to monopolise the viewing market north of the border.

That threat could see Sky move to take up the option

BT Vision recently won the right to break into the English Premier League, and they could also be interested in getting their foot in the market north of the border.

That threat could see Sky move to take up the option.

The concern, however, is that if nobody decides to take up the package it could leave Scottish football in an even bigger mess, and our cash-strapped clubs would be faced with a shortfall of around £16m to make up.

I was posting about this on 9th Jan at 9.15pm according to KDS clock. Probably posted similar around the same time.

I also posted this at 12.27pmon 13th Jan on a similar point. I do not remember making any connection to it preparing the way out, more providing other clubs with a security The Rangers cannot match.

Here is my take on what is pissing them off.

They got Longmuir on board to produce a restructure that saw them save a season moving up. Trouble was they had nowt to offer the other clubs as a financial inducement.

Celtic had that, offered it and clubs looked at the state of The Rangers and what they really are right now – a shower of barra boys trying to act like Harrods- and decided Celtic with at least 4 attempts at CL money to come and the ability to give up SPL prize money , were a much better bet than The Rangers.

Being outsmarted by the taigs (as they see us) must be ripping their knitting to shreds.

Last week the US government advised users to disable it because of a bug that leaves computers vulnerable to being hacked.
