Post-match, Robinson was shoddy, calculated and worse than James Scott

614

Ryan Christie’s pitched cross for Scott Sinclair to open the scoring with a volley was a thing of beauty.  It was 30 minutes into the game and Motherwell were withstanding everything Celtic could muster; it was going to take something special to open them up.  Sinclair’s finish was accomplished.

Ewan Henderson, on his first start in senior football, created space on the right wing to send a ball onto the forehead of Odsonne Eduard for the French striker to score his first of the day.  His second, which arrived on 88 minutes, but was just as crucial, was a thundering free kick from 26 yards, which clipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

You wait weeks for a great goal then you get four in one afternoon.  James Forrest darted into the box before sliding the ball into the path of Oliver Burke, who finished in the top corner.

So good for Celtic, but the story of this game runs a little deeper.  As though our central mid problems were not significant enough, Ryan Christie collapsed injured, prompting Kris Ajer to knock the ball out of play.  But, also making his first start in senior football was Motherwell’s 18-year-old striker, James Scott.

Scott collected the subsequent uncontested throw-in, which convention dictated would be returned to Celtic, but the teenager ran into the empty Celtic half and fired a shot at Scott Bain.  The Celtic keeper saved, but Scott had an accomplice in the form of 24-year-old Gboly Ariyibi, who scored with the rebound.

At this point, the game needed someone of character to make the right decision.  Unfortunately, this proverbial football fell at the feet of Motherwell manager, Steve Robinson.  He just “didn’t know what to do”.  Motherwell accepted the advantage their break with acceptable standards provided them with, without recourse.

I get teenagers make worse mistakes than this, although we should be clear, he has played the game all his life and will be more familiar with this scenario than you or I.  I could also understand that Robinson was caught like a rabbit in the disco lights, but then the Motherwell manager tried to throw Celtic fans under the bus in a clear case of whataboutery in his post-match interview, by accusing them of celebrating the departure of injured Carl McHugh.  Robinson has already told the radio audience McHugh has been knocked unconscious for the fourth time in his career.

This context was unavailable to Celtic fans during the game.  The context of Robinson’s comments were crystal clear.  It was shoddy, calculated and therefore worse than James Scott’s earlier transgression.

If you like football of the blood and snotters variety, the remaining 39 minutes, plus 9 minutes added-time, were right up your street.  The goal upset Celtic’s hold on the game and until Edouard’s late strike, Motherwell controlled the game.  But, the champions had enough and finished the visitors off in distinguished fashion.

  4. It is shocking if, as is being confirmed here, if there was a celebration from the Green Brigade as Carl McHugh was being stretchered off yesterday.

‘If you know the history’ Is a Celtic mantra. Remember John Thomson? What would it have been like if the last thing he heard was part of the crowd celebrating his predicament.

McHugh looked to be potentially in some distress. All Celtic fans should have the integrity and compassion to respect injured opponents.

  5. Also worth noting that Brendan is a shrewd individual and he may have an opportunity here to strengthen his hand going forward.

  6. Oh for a journalist willing to ask 1-2 follow up questions. King and Gerrard are presenting them with lovely statements that get reported verbatim without any effort to ask them to back them up.

Gerrard says there is no place for those kind of songs.

King says the club is doing everything it can to eliminate bigotry.

So as a journalist, what would you then ask? How about:

Journo: “Can you expand on that Mr King, what steps have you taken?”

    King: Deflection, whataboutery. . .

Journo: “Sorry Mr King, may I ask you again, what specifically are you doing to eliminate bigotry from the club? From the terraces? from the dressing room? Have you banned any fans, any supporters clubs that are linked to paramilitary loyalist groups? Taken away any season tickets from fans who are caught singing banned songs? Punished any players or employees who sing such songs and promote anti-Catholic sentiment?”

The goal is wide open. No one has the balls to ask it or no one is allowed to ask it without finding themselves reporting on traffic congestion in Stornoway. Jackson, Waddell, Spiers et al have no chance of being allowed to ask such questions so they just write powder-puff opinion columns without risking their careers.

  12. I too hear things from time to time. I have not heard anything that Catman has on this one. However, I no reason to doubt him. As he has posted above he posts things in good faith. His strike rate is better than mine. I have no reason to doubt what he posts.

    Until we meet again…

I had heard that Leicester cant get who they want until the end of the season, so NFL was in consideration as interim manager until the end of the season.

Sorry- I was away dealing with family business

SFTB- You so love to be selective in your responses.

As you will see below, this alleged selectiveness of mine is evident in your reply.

I answered the part that was on unity that was relevant.

You did and that was appreciated because it added some evidence to your assertion/ argument against TTT’s post. This could have been the basis for your “reasoned debate”, which I thought I was involved in too, but you omitted my expresssed reason from your response so that it could fit with your charge of KNOWING IT ALL and being arrogant.

I also wrote -Interested in .how you know what THOMTHETHIM meant?

You reposted-“how you know what THOMTHETHIM meant?”

That was half of what I reposted- the meat of the info was the 2nd part which was “That’s not how it read to me.”

In other words, I was explicitly absolving myself of your charge. I was not saying I KNEW what he meant, I was saying I saw and read it differently from yourself. There is no more or less arrogance involved in seeing things differently. I was explicitly saying this was a subjective not an objective deduction. It was an opinion. Can you explain to me how my different opinion is more arrogant than your opinion on what the post was about? Because, as you can see from your bolded comment below- that was what you were implying to me.

You have your reason for such i am not arrogant enough to believe i know what your thinking.”

Yet you were unsurprised- implying you knew I was going to say what I did.

Yet you asserted my statement claimed to know what Thomthethim meant to say (even though I had explicitly denied this).

And further yet, you implied my views were “arrogant”.

So, even whilst claiming to have the humility not to KNOW what I was meaning, you KNEW what emotion or mood, namely arrogance, it conveyed. It’s rare to see such a combination of omniscience and humility

As it turns out, this little spat will be the least of our troubles if what Catman hinted about turns out to be true. I suspect (a non-arrogant word) that there will be deep divisions in the support over where to apportion the blame or reasons for BR leaving, if that is, indeed, what is about to happen.

If Brendan was to go at this stage in our quest for 10 and to a club like Leicester, there will be almighty ructions. It would certainly go against what he said his aims for Celtic are.

In view of what happened in the summer , I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan at least spoke to Leicester . A wee boot up the boards arse.
