Practice penalties, de Vries

472

And then the lights came back on.

You and I have discussed this before, but one week from tomorrow Celtic could be in involved in a +£20m penalty kick competition. Between now and then I’d have the players take 100 each. Preparation is everything and there’s no amount of preparation for penalties next week which will be too much.

You have to suspect that it’s too soon for Brendan Rodgers to throw new keeper, Dorus de Vries, into such a critical game, without a proper opportunity to work with his defenders, or be assessed by Stevie Woods.

After the Aberdeen game later this month we have a two week international break, where de Vries will be able to work with the coaching staff for an extended period, but that precedes the group stages of European competition, so I’m not sure when the new keeper will get a first team break.

    Yep.

More to come, but what a great player and a horrible end.

    RIP Dalian

These proposed changes to the Champions League leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Serie A, EPL, la Liga and Germany to have a guaranteed 4 teams each in the CL? On what kind of sporting grounds?

When did the 4th placed team in these countries last do anything in the CL to warrant their presence as a guaranteed annual fixture?

The CL is a step too far for the 4th ranked Spanish team, Sevilla, but then the Europa League is too straightforward for them, or at least seems to be, given the amount of times they’ve won it lately.

I think there’s a number of teams now for whom the CL or at least last 16 CL is a bridge too far, but they’re still a level above the Europa League groups. Sevilla would be one example, I think Celtic are in there, Ajax/Psv too, the Turkish big two, dynamo Kiev etc

These clubs are crying out for meaningful European competition, not an annual struggle to achieve cannon fodder status in a rigged card game where the deck is stacked against them.

These proposed changes will only make things worse for these clubs.

Always see these rounds as banana skins wrapped in dog turds. Unpredictable when you encounter them.

Glad to get through and (shoosshh) I don’t think we’ll need ET either.

i would actually put the Partick game in the midweek slot before the 2nd rangers game.

get the fixture played up to date, and ahead in points of the horribles.

    go on celtic

  5. Managers usually play the players they sign themselves. Can’t believe de Vries was bought as a back up keeper. Also Brendan doesn’t hang around in giving the new ghuys game time.

It always annoys me when we sign a player and it’s about 5 weeks later before the guy comes off the bench for 20 minutes.

Paddy Roberts was far from the worst case but he was “training” with us for 3 or 4 weeks last year before he got a game. I expect Gordon to start next Wednesday but wouldn’t be surprised to see de Vries next week-end.

  6. SUNNYJIM, BSR the Howff was a great place. Live pub music at its best. Saw so many good (and great) bands in there. In the days when a band had to do the circuits to get s deal!

  7. De Vries will be on a hefty wage, going by BR’s assessment of him, he is here to play.CG deserves to be the man in possession, but he is under pressure now.

I don’t think we would have signed de Vries if Craig Gordon had everything Brendan wanted in a keeper.

Lots of chat about De Vries competing with Craig Gordon, but I rather think the signing has more to do with an assessment of Leo Fasan in light of Logan Bailly’s injury.

As for the adapted moniker… just back from a bit of a do in Marbella, a wedding, followed by a couple of days of Tapas therapy in Seville.

And jolly good luck to him and his lovely bride. She chose wisely.

  10. mullet and co 2 on

Shane Duffy looks like a long term target then? January being more realistic or even a Bosman next year?

By then Kolo will be off to The Qatari league or some such and we will have had sporadic glimpses of Boyata crashing the ball at the opposition.

(Though I did read Chris Davies say he had a big future)

The other position we are trying to recruit has to be centre mid/ defensive mid.

Net spend on transfers so far almost £4.5m or £5.5m. Wages may well be on a par with last season with Our new recruits taking up the wages of those who have left.

If Johansen goes along with a couple of others for a transfer fee, the net spend comes down so would we look to spend some more if we qualify for the Champions League?

It will be interesting to see where Scott Brown ends up in midfield if we get the holding midfielder we are after. Biton looked odds on to be sold but with an injury and a new manager, perhaps he could find another position in the team?

De Vries will be our first choice come out first European league game.

This is what caught my attention and made me think about it:

“For people that have seen him play for me at Swansea, it’s pretty clear [what I like about De Vries]. For me, I need to have a goalkeeper that knows that when we are in possession of the ball that we have 11 players.

“He can distribute the ball, he can pass the ball and Dorus is as good as I’ve seen at that on my travels.”

He dropped Simon Mignolet at Liverpool “needs to improve his feet”

He likes 11 outfield players when going forward and Craig doesn’t do that very well although I think he is an excellent keeper

Hopefully a good result on Wednesday will enable us to line up another good signing. I still think we need another bit of character in the team, probably in midfield where Brown is still the only one (except maybe for Henderson) who can handle himself in the Scottish league; especially with the deadboys back and especially with the special treatment the get from the press and officials.

  25. Glorious balance sheet – interesting. I don’t recall why they got rid of the cup winners cup. As I recall it was regarded as the second most important euro trophy after which came the uefa cup.

I don’t suggest resurrecting it but there is surely room for another competition. Forget qualifiers etc – if a team meets the criteria for qualification they get in. League position, domestic cup success, league champs – whatever.

The Cup-Winners’ Cup became discredited because so many teams who had not won their cup were being admitted to it, the actual cup winners often having won their national league as well and so entering the European Cup instead. There were too many weak teams in the competition at the end and so it was abolished.

NB: When RFC (1872) won the ECWC, they were not Scottish Cup holders but had gained entry to the competition because Celtic had also won the League and gone into the EC.
