Practice penalties, de Vries

472

And then the lights came back on.

You and I have discussed this before, but one week from tomorrow Celtic could be in involved in a +£20m penalty kick competition. Between now and then I’d have the players take 100 each. Preparation is everything and there’s no amount of preparation for penalties next week which will be too much.

You have to suspect that it’s too soon for Brendan Rodgers to throw new keeper, Dorus de Vries, into such a critical game, without a proper opportunity to work with his defenders, or be assessed by Stevie Woods.

After the Aberdeen game later this month we have a two week international break, where de Vries will be able to work with the coaching staff for an extended period, but that precedes the group stages of European competition, so I’m not sure when the new keeper will get a first team break.

  1. Anyone who has seen SG play for the Galaxy will know he is now slow enough to play in the Sevco defence.

Although that may be due to his disinterest.

“The Great Britian Olympic Team has improved performance EVERY year since 2000, due to massive investment from the National Lottery, and is now world class. ”

I won’t denigrate anyone’s dedication and application to wards getting an Olympic medal or appearance BUT……

Just as in the world of acting, Olympic Sport in GB has seen the rise of the PoshBoy and PoshGirl in the last 20 years. Using money gained by the tax on the poor that is the National Lottery, we have funded public school facilities as they are the only ones capable of raising matched funding from super-rich Old Boys and Girls. Many a private school, with undeserved charitable status, has had sports facilities re-built and open to its own rich kids for 95% plus time of its use.

Coupled with our desire to go down the Soviet route of targeting medals and Medal Table position rather than increase general participation in sport, we have invested hugely in the “soft target” sports where medals are easier to come by because fewer countries can afford the equipment costs. GB medals are largely won with expensive horses that have had dancing lessons, public schoolboys in expensive rowing boats and sailing boats and guys on expensive bikes (though that sport does still allow talented working class blokes access).

We do not fund any team sport that could be played with minimal equipment on makeshift playing surfaces. Outdoor availability of basketball, volleyball and handball courts which would allow groups of 10, 12 or 14 young people to play a sport with much less needed in equipment costs or space are neglected because it would take 20 years to make them sports which could provide medals. Smaller European nations can be competitive in these genuine international sports but we provide room only for the private school sport of Rugby 7s and the millionaires of pro golf and tennis to get Gold medals as we’d rather have the bling than the sporting participation and health improvements. If we were to find room for another sport we’d probably choose cricket which is played seriously by only half a dozen other countries.

I think it is a quote attributed to Joe Gormley on hearing about the 4 minute mile achieved by Roger Bannister, when Joe allegedly said “If they’d chucked half a dozen pairs of running spikes down a few selected pits in Doncaster we’d have broken that record 20 years ago”.

Chariots of Fire showed the elitist roots of Olympic sport. After the democratisation of sport that we achieved in the post-WW2 years, we are in danger of slipping back to a world full of Gentlemen (who are allowed to medal) and Players (who make up the field if they are lucky)

Not been at Celtic park for a good few years now, waiting on my daughter allowing me to go, she is getting there but time is precious and would help if her mother was a fellow Tim but until she decides she wants to cheer on the hoops am afraid I will only attend then, the pink strip is helping as she thinks that top is “cool”

No surprise to see Sevco use their “table-topping” position to try and attract players. Lucky for them those “randomly generated by computer” fixtures worked out the way they did – four of last season’s bottom five in the first four weeks…..

A subject close to my heart,

No investment in new running tracks or stadiums since Coe and Ovett

Public money used to target Olympic success in sports that are not accessible to the general public

The UK Olympic committee have deliberately targeted funding towards sports outwith track and field in order to compete in the medal table as you say “soft targets”

I could compare it to the Murray years of Old Co when the appearance of success was all consuming and great Scottish talent was ignored in favour of big money signings

A great shame that so many sports are under funded but what can you expect from Lord Coe and his friends?

  18. SFTBs @ 9:12 PM,

Good post, unfortunately too true an awe.

    MATS NILLOC @ 6:42 PM,

I don’t know what gives you the idea that the Celtic Board backed Ronnie…

They sacked him, or rather didn’t renew his one year rolling contract, that’s pretty much the opposite of backing.

In his last transfer window they have him no backing at all, the little bit of transfer activity undertaken was just business as usual stuff, IMO it would have made no difference if RD was there or not.

Remember his first transfer window? Once VVD was sold we were anticipating the signing of a quality Striker… the one up front type…

Of course he failed to materialise yet Ronny let us know, he’d gotten his man, Really?

Yeah! Ciftic was his number one target all along.

The principal political issues around these Olympics are two fold.

The state sponsored Russian doping scandal , reminiscent of the OstDeuchlanders of the `70s and `80s .

The funding swindle ? Yes. The inhabitants of the favellas are the victims .Not the non public school boys of U.K.

Your whole piece reeks of the politics of envy in a U.K. context.

A throwback to Soviet era ” sport .”

Whetever happened to the Press sisters. Or was it brothers.

  28. Stevie G? Player coach maybe. But I don’t see it. First season in for BR he will want the spine of a team for next three years in place this season.

Toure is his experienced stop gap. I don’t see him going for another. Roy Keane, Tommy graveson and Freddie ljungberg have been nice to see in the hoops but week in week out they were not the heart and soul of the team.

A hungry player in his prime please!
