Premiership takes familiar shape with a green exception

517

It was good to get our business out of the way on Friday night before what turned out to be an interesting weekend, as the Scottish Premiership adopted a familiar look. Aberdeen did well to come from behind away to Ross County. They will not challenge for top spot, but their grip on second place looks to be in rude health.

The major questions is, is there a genuine challenge from Hibs for the remaining European spots? Their win at Ibrox, also coming from behind, suggests Neil Lennon has instilled an important ingredient of success: attitude. Not every opponent will be as defensively porous as Newco. Nor will they always face a self-defeating pantomime of a stadium.

The test for Neil will come when his team faces disciplined defensive formations – like Ross County, the only side who have prevented Hibs from scoring this season.

St Johnstone are the only other team on full points, however, they have the benefit of starting the season earlier than those who didn’t have European football, so I wouldn’t read too much into their wins against Motherwell and Kilmarnock. Their 0-3 League Cup tanking at home to Partick Thistle may be more indicative of the season ahead.

  1. Danny Ings would be a far better signing than Polter. Good player who, as well as being the elusive 3rd striker at the club, can also off a main striker and from wide. Unfortunate with injuries over last 18 months or so but worth a chance on a loan, or loan to buy, deal.

  2. Why are we not being serenaded as to…..

the CL money pot, coming our way from last season ?

Is it because, our Invincibility only applies to the….

    Scottish pub league ?

Have we ever been in the CL groups and, not won a…..

    single game before ? I don’t know, that’s why I ask.

Also, as for Sportscene not mentioning the bigotry….

at ibrokes on Saturday, I was more relieved that….

the song book fae Firhill on Friday didny get a mention….

How could anybody say – “We are all Neil Lennon”…….

and then, hand millions of quid’s over to the same….

PLC board, who flung Neil Lennon under a bus ?

Ah mean, being the other side of the old firm coin…..

dizny even scratch the surface !!!

    Anyway,…….

Jamie Walker is a, nuisance value, Darren Jackson type….imho.

    Worth a punt.

    …..off-oot.

  4. Think the guy who posted the Polter story has been outed for posting fake news a few times…

  5. My son has just reminded me that Polter actually scored in the QPR game that we saw him in. Came on as a sub, ran about like a headless chicken then scored.

  6. Phil just posted that Klopp wants Ings to play ‘guaranteed minutes’ before deal is agreed…

  7. Danny Ings was a good striker. After two bad knee injuries (left and right) he hasn’t played much football since 2015. How long would it take him to shake off his rustiness?

Still, as a third choice you could do a lot worse.

  10. Are any CQNers going to the Bon Accord on North Street before the game on Wednesday ?

I need a wee favour if anyone is going.

  11. Just did a quick check there. Danny Ings has done both knees in twice in his career so far.

God, I hope he’s not another John Hartson…

  12. If we are looking for a back up striker for Scottish fitba, could do worse than Moult fae Murderwell, last year of his deal, 500k would do it

  13. I’m now at the stage of wallowing in a happy and profitable footballing weekend and not really caring who we sign, amused in the knowledge that ANY singing through the doors before Wednesday will be like a flick to the perma-rage balls of every grunting Hun in this Kingdom of Timmites.

    Oh, Astana –

    – will crumble under the weight of expectation and atmosphere on Wednesday. They arrive this time with more anxiety than hope, and more to lose.

I really fancy us for 5 if we start at the CL tempo we displayed in a few of the group games last season. Get clicking early and the Celtic machine will go to town on them.

I think Traynor is one of the most extreme toxic factors in Scottish football. I hold him in contempt and this post from KDS in 2008 sets out why.

“What is the most beautiful moment in your career that you remember?

-I remember many beautiful moments I had in my career but the one most to remember when I was the referee of the game Celtic versus Astana.I had superb feelings when the Celts started singing “You’ll Nevere Walk Alone.” Wonderful moment that I will never ever forget.”

  17. who could have forseen that Celtic would be in a situation before hardly a ball has been kicked in the new season that the team would be without two established central defenders, two of our top strikers I’m including young Roberts here, Griff doubtful and Stu Armstrong another top player and goalscorer arguing about money matters yet we can still qualify for the Champions Lge. group stage. It should not be forgotten that Celtic will be playing European football yet again this season until Christmas which is a fair old achievement.

It will be interesting to see if Brendan can get Paddy Roberts to sign even if it means he will not be available until the second leg in Astana. Celtic have a big squad with a lot of good players and Brendan will get his tactics right no doubt.
